Lean is the most widespread management philosophy of our time and is currently present in every industry, yet the concept is still vaguely defined and widely misunderstood. As a response to the confusion regarding the concept of lean and its application, Niklas Modig and Pär Åhlström launched This is Lean – Resolving the efficiency paradox in October 2011. The book became an instant best-seller in Scandinavia and after four years it is translated into more than ten languages has sold over 175,000 copies making it to one of the most sold lean books of all time. By using clear, concise language and insightful examples, the book has brought greater clarification to the essence of lean and revolutionized top-executives and employees understanding of what lean actually is. The book also argues that many companies and organizations have an incorrect view of what “true” efficiency is. Organizations are managed as “islands” and managers develop incentives for each island to become more efficient. By doing this, we believe that we are efficient. The more value form each island the better. The book however demonstrate the opposite - efficient islands is the last thing we want to have. Islands drive sub-optimization, which in turn generates of a lot of challenges, problems and waste for organizations. This means that the more efficient our islands are, the more inefficient we will be. The book defines this phenomena for the efficiency paradox and demonstrate that it can be resolved by adopting a flow efficient operations strategy.

SPECI A L EDI T IONS The spread of This is Lean Shortly after the release of This Is Lean, companies and organizations started to use the book as a tool for developing a common understanding. Top-management teams read the book and used it as a base for discussion when evaluating if lean was something that they wanted to implement. Some companies distributed the book to all managers within the whole organisation making it compulsory reading with the message “this should be our view of what lean is”. Other companies took the spread of the book even further and let 100% of their employees read the book. For instance, the largest university hospital in Sweden, Karolinska University Hospital, let over 17 400 employees read book. Tailor-made special editions As a response to this extensive usage of the book, Rheologica Publishing developed a product called Special Edition. A special edition is a tailor-made version of the book including a number of company-specific “add-ons” and contributions. A basic special edition always includes the company’s logotype on the cover of the book and a specific foreword written by a company representative, usually the CEO of the company. A more extensive special edition includes a number of longer texts covering variety of topics, for instance: • Background and scope of the company’s lean transformation program (usually added after the foreword). • All members of the top-management team write a short text regarding their personal view of why and how they want to implement lean • Success stories from the company’s lean journey A tool for building a common mind-set A special edition can consequently be tailor-made in any way the company desires. When including company specific information in the book it is no longer only a book, it becomes an asset in the development of the company. It often serves as a important symbol for the whole transformation program, “this is our way forward”. The actual development process of the company edition also has a very positive indirect effect on the top-management, since it forces the them to invest their time and effort. When each manager contributes to the book, he/she tends to be much more committed to get “buy-in” and take personal ownership in the transformation program. It is a very easy and efficiency way to develop an aligned improvement improvement program with ONE mind-set.
DI F F E R E N T F O R M AT S Special edition with one foreword What make this special edition different from the regular book is that the foreward is specific to and written by the company. Most often this foreward is written by top management, for example the managing director or operations lead. The intention with the foreword is to relate the content of the book to the company’s operational development. Several longer texts Contributors write a number of longer texts through which they share they knowledge and experiences about organizational development. The number of contributors and texts vary but are usually between five and eleven. Often contributors answer an open question to which they share their thoughts, ideas and experiences. An example of such a question could be: How does a company become world-leading within the industry in which it operates and competes? One text per chapter The contributors write a text related to the content of each chapter of This is Lean. This format allows the contributors to discuss their experiences and expertise in direct relation to the content of the specific chapters. This allows the content of the specific chapter to be further expanded upon in a industry-specific och company-specific context.
CONTRIBUTORS Who is a suitable contributor? If the special edition is a characterized by one foreward, it is most often written by the company’s CEO. If the special edition includes a number of longer texts, contributors are often from top-management. Other times, a mix of representatives from within the company and representatives from outside the company are used as contributors for the company edition. Examples of contributors include: Representatives from the company/organization • Top-management or other managers • Lean specialists or owners of specfic lean projects /programs Representatives from outside the company/organization • Academics or other lean experts • Top management of other companies that have successfully worked with lean How are the texts written and how long are they? If several longer texts are added to the book, each text is usually between 1,5-2 A4 pages. Usually an open-ended question is used to guide the content and to create a common thread. If one text per chapter is written, it is important that a suitable contributor is chosen for the content of each specific chapter. If this format is chosen, it is often advantageous if there is a planning group that reads the book and, for each chapter, proposes a contributor and a suitable angle to discuss. If finding the time to write a text is difficult, a journalist /writer has successfully been used to aid the writing process. The journalist interviews the contributor regarding his /her thoughts on the subject after which a first draft is typed up and read by the contributor.
