Term 3, Week 1, Friday 29th July 2016 PRINCIPAL’S KORERO
WELCOME NEW STUDENTS
Welcome back to term three. I hope you all had an enjoyable break, not having to worry about school lunches and getting to the bus on time. This term is already starting to look busy. All teachers attended a training day in the holidays related to Financial Capabilities. This was an area identified by many parents, in our survey at the end of last year, as something they would like us to be teaching. We have lots of ideas and are looking at ways we can incorporate this into our topics for this term. A financially capable person is able to make informed judgments and effective decisions regarding the personal use and management of money. To do this they need: •an understanding of their own and others' values •knowledge and skills in managing money and income, setting goals, and planning ahead. Wherever possible we will be integrating Financial Capability into our Literacy and Numeracy programmes, not just the understanding of what notes and coins look like, but also debt and the importance of putting money aside. We are hoping to have involvement from whanau throughout this topic and look forward to sharing our learning, and getting your suggestions as well.
We have had several new enrolments for this term. Welcome to the following new students. Kowhai Room – T.K Hohaia, Lauren GregoryHunt, Rhiannon Lee-Taipari Rimu Room – Kayla Gregory-Hunt, Jayden Gregory-Hunt Puriri Room – Brody Hutchinson Due to the increase in numbers we have had to move our year 5 students out of Rimu room and into Kauri and Puriri Rooms. All students have settled in well with the changes
SHINE AND STRENGTH PROGRAMMES Our Year 7 Girls and Year 8 boys completed these programmes last term. There was some great learning involved in these programmes, with the highlights definitely being the graduations where the Girls went to lunch at The Little Kitchen and the Boys went to Whangarei for Lazer Tag. This term our year 7 Boys will be involved in ‘Strength’ and our Year 5 & 6 Girls will be involved in ‘Shine Petite’ especially designed for younger students. A Big Thank You to Karen and Isaac who have been running these programmes.

PHARMAC - Changes to the National Immunisation Schedule Public Health Nurse – Lorreen Broughton – 021441958 or 08005374342 From 1 January 2017 the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be funded to include people up to the age of 26 years. A two dose regimen will be funded for children 14 years and under. This decision enables the introduction of a two dose regimen to year 8 girls AND boys for the 2017 school year. HPV is common. Most people have the virus at some time in their lives. For most people it causes no symptoms and goes away on its own. It is much more common in young people, probably because we develop immunity to the virus as we get older. Some types of HPV can cause changes in the cells of the cervix or the lining of the mouth and throat. They are known as high risk HPVs. Doctors call this cell change dysplasia. The changed cells have an increased risk of becoming cancerous.
