You can stencil the background with the Bubble Wrap stencil using Natural Buff OR… you can create a thin wash with Natural Buff and lay a piece of actual bubble paper over the damp surface – press down – then gently pull up and off. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS: LOVE WORD – Once you have traced where your word will be placed, drybrush over that area with Warm White. Use your liner and your Boysenberry Pink to do the letting. You can always thin your paint a bit to help it flow smoothly. Once completely dry, finely outline around the lettering in Lamp Black. GIRL Basecoat her face, arm and legs with Warm Beige (Fleshtone). Drybrush to highlight with a bit of Natural Buff. Shade around all inside edges with Honey Brown. With a bit of Tomato Red and Warm Beige mixed, lightly drybrush her cheeks, elbow and knees. If this still appears too bright, you may add additional Warm Beige to tone it down a bit. Her eyes are based in Warm White and the pupils are Lamp Black. Add a tiny dot of Warm White to each eye to highlight. Her extremities and her face are all finely outlined in Black. This also includes her facial features, such as her nose, eyelashes, etc… her lips are painted with an equal, thinned mix of Tomato Red and Warm Beige (then outlined finely in Black). Solidly paint her hair with an equal mix of Toffee and Marigold. Drybrush her hair with an equal mix of Antique White and Moon Yellow. Shade around all of the inside edges (and where the curls will be) with Honey Brown. Finely outline her hair in Black and create the curls with Black as well. Her dress is basecoated solidly with Rookwood Red. Once dry, drybrush it with Tomato Red. Highlight lightly on her sleeve and front of the dress with Mocha, then drybrush back over those areas with Tomato Red to deepen the red color. The button on her dress is Lamp Black. Finely outline the dress in Black as well. I added ‘lace’ trim to the bottom of her dress, painting with thinned Warm White and by making “u” shapes along the edge. Her collar, cuff and socks are based solidly in Bleached Sand. Drybrush over these items with Warm White. Finely outline in Black. Her shoes are solid Lamp Black. PUPPY – Basecoat the entire puppy with Cashmere Beige. Drybrush with Toffee. Use Warm White to highlight her muzzle, forehead, ears, paws and chest. Shade around all inside edges of the puppy with Sable Brown. Lightly drybrush a mix of Tomato Red and Warm White to lightly blush the puppy’s cheeks. You can add more Warm White if you need to tone it down. The eyes are Warm White with Lamp Black pupils. I added a fine thinned line of Warm White to each eye as an accent, along with a tiny Warm White dot. The nose is solid Lamp Black with a thin Warm White line across the top. The inside of the mouth is solid Rookwood Red. Facial features, such as eyebrows, eyelashes, etc… are all finely lined in Black. The entire puppy is finely outlined in Black as well (including all curls!)

The puppy’s bow is solidly based in Rookwood Red and drybrushed with Tomato Red. I highlighted lightly with a touch of Mocha to the top of the bow and the ribbon. I drybrushed back over this with Tomato Red, to help deepen the reddish color. Finely outline the entire bow in Black. LARGE FLOWER – Paint the leaves first by basecoating them solidly with Hauser Medium Green. Let dry. Drybrush over the leaves with Irish Moss. Highlight the top half of the leaves by drybrushing them with Wasabi Green. Finely outline all leaves (and veins on the leaves) with Black. Shade Boysenberry Pink where the heart vines will be placed. Once dry, line the vines finely with Black. The centers of the flowers are based solidly with Bleached Sand, and the tiny hearts are painted solidly with Boysenberry Pink. Basecoat the flower petals solidly with Bleached Sand. Drybrush the petals heavily with Warm White. Shade around each petal’s inside edge with Boysenberry Pink. Deepen the shading around the small open part of each petal by shading this with thinned Rookwood Red. Rebase (if necessary) the center of the flower with Mocha. Shade around the center with Boysenberry Pink. Also used thinned Boysenberry Pink to create fine lines coming from the center. Finely outline the petals in Black as well as creating fine border lines of Black all around the center and fine lines of Black in the center as well. Create circle shapes in the center with Black (for the seeds) and fill those circles solidly with Rookwood Red paint. Add a dot of Hauser Medium Green on top of the Rookwood Red dots and when dry, you can dot again with Black, using your marker for tiny details.
FINISHING: Once we have finished our painting and our project has dried, it will be time to seal! I simply spray sealed mine with Americana’s Matte Spray Finisher. You may add ribbon or wire to create a hanger, if you like! This design was inspired by looking at old vintage valentines but I think it could be displayed year round as a symbol of someone you love! I hope you enjoyed painting this with me!
