Our Mission The Washington Jesuit Academy, a Catholic school formed under the auspices of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and operated according to Jesuit educational principles, educates in grades 6-8 academically talented adolescent boys from low-income families regardless of religious denomination, providing for them a disciplined, rigorous learning environment. The goal of the education is to prepare these boys to become men for others who, having gained confidence spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically, will be able to succeed in a college preparatory high school on their way to becoming leaders in their communities.
Non-Discrimination Policy Washington Jesuit Academy admits students of any race, color, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

COLLEGE INCENT IVE FUND An anonymous foundation has established an endowment fund for WJA’s graduating classes of 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The purpose of the fund is to provide tuition assistance to students who graduate from the Washington Jesuit Academy, remain in high school continuously and graduate from high school to then enroll in college in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, respectively.

This year marked another major milestone in the life of the Washington Jesuit Academy. Our first group of students—who entered WJA as 6th graders back in 2002—completed high school. We are delighted to report that 19 of these 20 talented young men earned high school diplomas. Seventeen are attending college this fall, while one is serving our country in the United States Air Force and another is learning critical vocational skills in a workforce training program. We are so proud of these young men and their hard work. Our alumni continue to defy the odds that are stacked against them: they live in a city where fewer than 50% of males graduate from high school; a city where only 16% of low-income students attend college; a city where 72% of African American high school dropouts are unemployed and 60% spend time in prison before age 30; a city with the highest adult illiteracy rate in the nation—37%. And yet, they have persevered and continue to do so. What led to this rate of success? At the risk of sounding trite, we have learned that it really does “take a village” to educate our boys. Each of these young men had an adult in his life who encouraged him to attend the Washington Jesuit Academy and made sure he stayed on track, completed his homework and overcame the countless challenges that were set before him. The dedication of the Washington Jesuit Academy’s teachers, who set high expectations for each student and then worked alongside him to meet those expectations, was critical. Another crucial link was the corps of volunteer tutors who, after a long day at work, gave up one evening every week to supervise study hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. And none of this could have happened without the generosity of the Academy’s donors, who support this team by giving to the Annual Fund, donating through the Combined Federal Campaign and United Way, advertising in the Jesuit Gridiron Classic program or participating in WJA’s Sponsorship Program. In this report we have articulated how essential this team of students, parents, teachers, tutors and sponsors is to what we do at the Academy. These sustained partnerships helped a young man named Donté Taylor to thrive at the Academy—and beyond. We hope that as you read about Donté’s journey, you will understand that he is just one of 160 young men—students and alumni—whose lives have been impacted by our team, and that you play a critical role in our mission. On behalf of the WJA Board, Faculty and Staff, thank you for your generous and loyal support of the Washington Jesuit Academy and its students. Your commitment to WJA empowers our team to change lives through education. Sincerely,
Leonard Baxt Chairman Board of Directors
William B. Whitaker President
Dedicat ed St udent s There was no
reason to expect Donté Taylor to fall in love with Washington Jesuit Academy. The school day was 12 hours long. Summer vacation lasted one measly month. And rising each morning at 5 a.m. for his commute from far Anacostia to the school in Northeast Washington was hardly a recommendation.
45% Graduation rate at Donté’s neighborhood school 100% at St. Andrew’s 30% College acceptance rate at Donté’s neighborhood school 100% at St. Andrew’s 1198 Average SAT Score at Donté’s neighborhood school 1882 at St. Andrew’s 0% Passing scores on Advanced Placement tests at Donté’s neighborhood school 83% at St. Andrew’s
“I was excited but also a little scared,” recalls Donté of those first days as a WJA sixth grader. “There was so much work. And I didn’t know any other students.” But Donté thrived at WJA’s academically rigorous program. He entered the Academy as a 6th grader with talent and skills that allowed WJA to expose him to a world of resources and opportunities that would better prepare him for high school.
Bob Wassmann, a veteran reading teacher at WJA, recalls that WJA truly 100% at St. Andrew’s untapped Donté’s academic potential. He took advantage of WJA’s extended school day to learn study skills and read more books. He sought extra work from teachers and earned WJA’s “Student of the Week” award eight times in three years for his effort and behavior. 23% Scoring at proficiency or above at Donté’s neighborhood school
By the time he graduated in 2006, he was in the top tier of his class. But beyond his academic achievement, he matured into what WJA expects of all its students: a Man for Others, a young man of character. Teachers remember him as dedicated, positive to others and always eager to learn. “I think my life would have been so different if I hadn’t gone to WJA. I probably would have been hanging out, playing hooky,” he recalls.
In reality, Donté might have faced a worse fate than hooky if his mother had not found the Academy. His neighborhood middle school and its traditional six-hour school day would not have offered the academic challenge that Donté got at WJA. His neighborhood high school is one of the worst in the country and more than half of his old elementary school classmates have already dropped out of high school. Of those who are still enrolled, only about 20% are performing at proficiency or above on standardized tests. And as gang violence continues to spike across the city, even the most driven students face danger and distraction every day. Instead, Donté is preparing himself for the next leap forward. As a senior—with honors—at a selective private school, Donté is applying to college this winter to pursue a career in design or architecture. Without any bidding, he credits Washington Jesuit Academy with clearing his way. “WJA definitely prepared us for high school. They told us, ‘You’re going to be taking exams, writing papers like this at the high school level. I expected what I found at St. Andrew’s. I was ready for it.” Valentine Davies, WJA’s Director of Graduate Support, reiterates Donté’s success in high school. Mr. Davies continues to solidify critical partnerships with Donté’s mother and high school administrators—as he does with all WJA alumni—in order to affirm Donté’s strengths and abilities. “As we prepare to celebrate Donté’s graduation,” Davies says, “we are excited to hear him speak of such schools as University of Maryland, Syracuse University, Penn State and Catholic University of America— programs that will be enriched by this young man’s perspective.” Donté recites a long list of people at WJA who helped prepare him for high school and for what lies ahead—Mr. Davies, Mr. Wassmann, study hall tutor Emily Durso, his sponsor family the Pizzis, and math teacher Rosie MacInnes. The truth is, even more people have played a role in Donté’s story— every teacher, every tutor and every donor. In fact, we have 96 Dontés—in high school and beyond—who have been impacted by the Washington Jesuit Academy’s commitment to creating educational opportunity. For all of them, WJA has served as a turning point in their journey to high school success.

Ms. Taylor saw the academic potential in her son and wanted more for him than his neighborhood middle and high schools—schools that she herself attended. She knew early on that she wanted to find a school that would set the bar higher and provide more opportunities for Donté than she had. She heard about the Washington Jesuit Academy from a friend at church, but wasn’t immediately convinced. “At first I thought it was a school for problem boys who didn’t know how to act. But then I saw how it worked,

and it’s not like that at all. It’s just a place for educating our young men. I told Donté, ‘This could change the rest of your life.’” The Academy may have changed Donté’s life. It certainly provided for him a rigorous, yet supportive environment where he was challenged personally and academically. He had entered as a disinterested reader, but graduated as an eager and well-prepared student with good study habits. Ms. Taylor noted his change in attitude, with some surprise. “Donté would come home from school, get a snack and disappear into his room. He’d say, ‘Mom, I’ve got homework to finish,’” says Ms. Taylor. “He was excited about the things he was being taught.” Parents like Ms. Taylor are an integral part of the equation at the Academy. WJA accepts students without regard to race, ethnicity or religion, but looks for a “significant other,” be it a parent, grandmother, aunt or neighbor, who will remain fully engaged in the young man’s journey at WJA. “We have found that the academic success of our boys is inextricably linked to the degree of their parents’ involvement,” says Ann Clark, Director of Counseling at the Academy. She remarks that the parents who attend school functions, communicate regularly with teachers and keep WJA informed of what’s going on at home typically see strong academic progress in their sons. Ms. Taylor was one of those parents. Ms. Taylor does admit to one disappointment with WJA. “When it was time for Donté to leave, I was really sad. I liked the atmosphere, the breakfast, lunch and dinner, the study hall and all of that. Myself and other parents said, ‘Can’t you just keep growing through 12th grade?’” While it does not extend through high school, the Academy does offer significant resources to its alumni through its Graduate Support Program. Ms. Taylor and her son have certainly made the most of these services, especially this year as Donté applies to college. Ms. Taylor gratefully adds, “Washington Jesuit Academy put a lot into the boys. Thanks to them, Donté was well-prepared to succeed in high school.”

“He impressed me from the first moment I saw him,” remembers Bob Wassmann. “He was a sixth grader acting like an eighth grader.” “He had an infectious laugh and was always eager to engage,” adds Rosie MacInnes. “What blows me away is that it doesn’t matter what level students are when they come here. If they have the desire and are willing to make the effort, they can flourish. I’m continually amazed at the progress they make.”
What Donté couldn’t know during those first days at Washington Jesuit Academy, was just how lucky he was. Wassmann and MacInnes, two gifted and innovative teachers, were perfectly suited to launch his academic career.
— Rosie MacInnes, WJA math teacher
“He had a lot of ability which had not been tapped,” says Wassmann. “The teachers liked him and he liked being here. He was a bright kid who wanted to be challenged and we challenged him. It paid off.” Wassmann, a language and arts teacher for thirty-seven years, is still infectiously eager. His classroom is lush with books, the walls covered in literary quotes and posters. It is less a classroom than a reading lounge, exactly as he intended. “I was determined to create the ideal classroom for reading, an inviting, welcoming space that encourages kids to read.” One of his innovations is allowing students to choose what they read and what they write. In other words, says Wassmann, they “own” their education. That strategy worked wonders for Donté Taylor. “He didn’t like reading too much before he got there,” says Donté’s mother Lisa. “But now he loves it. Give him a book and he’ll read it in two days.”
Rosie MacInnes has learned to be creative in managing her math class, and some of those lessons came from her students. “Boys are just so different in how they learn. It’s unrealistic to have them sit in chairs and not move. They have a lot of energy, they need to be physical. Instead of trying to fight it, I work with it.” Before coming to WJA, Rosie worked with a transitional house for children who were HIV positive and spent time in Tanzania teaching business math and statistics through the International Jesuit Volunteer Corps. She was hired as one of WJA’s founding teachers, just in time to meet Donté. “He was always incredibly positive, always trying to improve himself.” That attitude, says Rosie, is more important for academic success than any other factor. “What blows me away is that it doesn’t matter what level students are when they come here. If they have the desire and are willing to make the effort, they can flourish. I’m continually amazed at the progress they make.” Ms. Susan D. The job doesn’t pay well. In fact it doesn’t pay anything at all. But Emily Durso insists that the rewards of tutoring Washington Jesuit Academy students for the last eight years have been immeasurable.
12 hours in WJA’s school day (7:30 am – 7:30 pm)
“It surprises me how intellectual these students can be, even late in the evening after being in school longer than most of us have been at work. One minute they’ll say something childish, and they next they’re asking a very complex question, a college type question, about the institution of slavery.”
40 volunteer tutors make it happen
WJA is blessed to have a corps of volunteer tutors. Some are retired, others 1/3 of tutors have been volunteering at WJA for more than four years come directly from work. Like relief pitchers, they are full time teachers during study hall between 5:30 and 7:30 each evening. Durso describes the job as equal parts mentor, confidant and traffic cop. 80 volunteer hours logged each week
Among the many students who have made lasting impressions on Durso, Donté Taylor stands out. She describes him as “sweet and easy” and smiles to recall the day he played the role of big brother in study hall, intercepting questions from younger students about his favorite subject—math. In the last eight years, Durso has missed only two Monday night sessions. Her attendence record is no small feat given that she serves as president of the Hotel Association of Washington, is a trustee at UDC, and sits on the boards of COMCAST, the Washington Urban League and the Washington Convention and Tourism Center. She is also the founder of The Hospitality High School, the first of its kind in the country. Durso is not tutoring this year. “I’m going to school nights, retooling myself.” But even though she is taking a break from tutoring, she is still a sponsor, and looking forward to WJA’s next graduation.
“Graduation always makes me happy. You first see the students as little guys, and all of a sudden they’re six feet tall. I sponsored this one kid and all he cared about was football. He got up at graduation and read a poem he wrote. I thought, wow, you write poetry, too? Who knew that was inside? Someone at WJA brought that out of you. That wouldn’t happen anywhere else.” Mr. and Mrs. William J. McSorley‡ Mr. Gregory Melanson Ms. Gail J. Melnick Mr. Charles Meyer Mr. Leslie Meyers Mr. Michael Michalisin Mr. Jesse M. Vernon and Sue Pizzi have a long history of charitable giving. But until they sponsored Donté Taylor at Washington Jesuit Academy, they’d never had such an immediate return.
“The first time we met Donté he introduced himself, shook our hands and looked us dead in the eye,” remembers Vernon. “I was impressed. That’s something so simple, but so important.” $18,000 is the cost to sponsor a student for a year at the Academy
Every student at WJA receives a full scholarship for his three middle 76 sponsors or sponsor groups school years. He might have one 68% are sponsoring their second or third student sponsor, or more than a dozen. Vernon and Sue Pizzi joined forces with Zagtown, a group of Gonzaga and Georgetown Prep high school alumni who were already supporting Donté. “It’s funny the way it happened,” laughs Vernon. “We were having dinner with Sue’s younger brother Matt, and he’s telling us we should support this great program at Washington Jesuit Academy. Divided by a high school rivalry nearly as old as Washington itself, Vernon needed some convincing. It came in a phone call from WJA President Bill Whitaker. “I listened to Bill describe the academic mission of the Academy and their goals to prepare these kids for high school. It sounded great,” says Vernon. “I said we’re ready to open our check book.” The role of sponsor can begin and end with signing a check. But the Pizzis were eager to participate in any way they could. For birthdays and graduation, Sue would get in touch with teachers to ask what books Donté might like. “We didn’t want to be a nuisance,” says Vernon, “but anytime we were invited to the school for lunch or Back-to-School Nights, we went. We were there to offer our support. We’d look at these kids the way I look at my own.” After Donté’s graduation, Vernon enlisted his partners at K&P Builders to join them in sponsoring another student, and then another. For Sue, a former school teacher, the rewards multiplied. “You really do know what your money is doing. So many times you donate and it goes into a conglomerate—one piece here, another there. With WJA you see the totality of what they’re doing. I’m impressed with the time the students put in, and the dedication of the teachers. It’s a shame everybody can’t go to a school like that. A place where people love and care for them.” “I always told my own kids that education is something nobody can ever take away from you,” adds Vernon. “What’s most important at WJA is that these kids have the same opportunities that we had.”
“Right now I am so thankful and grateful to be at this school and be able to have such wonderful friends and have a good education. This spring and the next quarter I would like to accomplish having at least four A’s again and also pass any test or quiz that I take.”
— Donté, from a letter to the Pizzis
“So now I want to thank you for writing back to me, visiting me, and also donating all that money to help me succeed. You will be happy in the future that you donated to WJA because I will become successful and maybe become an architect.”
— Donté, from a letter to the Pizzis
