Confirmation is scheduled for Pentacost Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church -for both Sacred Heart and Saint Raphael parishes-at 11:30AM Mass with the Most Reverend Bishop David A. Zubik.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place next Sunday, March 3, 2019 during 9:00 a.m. Mass for children in grades K - 4. The children are dismissed with Sharon Smoller to the rectory library for the daily Mass readings and homily, and general intercessions. The children return to their pews for Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Second Grade First Communion Family Service will be held for both second graders and their parents on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Sacred Heart from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This is a special time for the children to learn more about the Jesus’ gift of himself in the Eucharist. Questions, please contact Sharon Smoller.
The First Saturday Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was first mentioned by Our Lady of Fatima on July 13, 1917. After showing the three children a vision of hell she said, "You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace... I shall come to ask for... the Communion of reparation on the first Saturdays..." Eight years later, on December 10, 1925, Mary and the Child Jesus appeared to Lucia, the sole surviving Fatima visionary, at a convent in Pontevedra, Spain. Our Lady rested her hand on Lucia's shoulder, revealing a heart encircled by thorns. The Child Jesus said: "Have compassion on the heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation…
Conditions Our Lady spoke next, saying: "Look, my daughter, at my heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me." Why Five Saturdays? Christians have always honored the Blessed Virgin on Saturday because of her constant faith in Jesus on that first Holy Saturday before the Resurrection. Five first Saturdays of reparation were requested to atone for the five ways in which people offend the Immaculate Heart of Mary: 1. attacks upon Mary's Immaculate Conception 2. attacks against her Perpetual Virginity 3. attacks upon her Divine Maternity and the refusal to accept her as the Mother of all mankind 4. for those who try to publicly implant in children's hearts indifference, contempt and even hatred of this Immaculate Mother 5. for those who insult her directly in her sacred images.

“Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.” (Lk 6:37 ) In today’s Gospel, Jesus exhorts us not to be judgmental. This is a challenging teaching because it seems to be contrary to our God-given ability to observe and desire to correct the errors of others. In fact God truly does want us to see evil for what it is. However we are not to look down on sinners or condemn them. We are to be merciful as God is merciful.
Magnificat, February 2019

SIXTH GRADE NEWS Did you know that Venus’ day is longer than its year?!!?... And the largest mountain in our solar system is found on Mars?!!?... And that for a period of time during its orbit - even though it’s no longer considered a planet - Pluto is closer to the Sun than Neptune?!!? These are some of the discoveries the Sixth Grade class has recently made on our journey through the solar system in Science. To add icing to the celestial cake, we said Good-bye to the Moon and landed in Egypt in Reading this month. The Sixth Grade class “liftedoff” the month with an “out of this world” performance in the K4J assembly entitled “No More Monkey Manners” as we practiced Respect our K4J Virtue of the Month - and learned more about our Holy Hero: Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Benediction is at 11:45AM “Is not our Lord as meek and humble in the Blessed Sacrament as He was during His life on earth? Is He not always the Good Shepherd, the Divine Consoler, the Changeless Friend? Happy the soul that knows how to find Jesus in the Holy Eucharist?” ~ St. Peter Julian Eymard
WINTER WARMING STATION It's that time of year again! Temperatures are consistently below freezing and many are seeking warmth. At Catholic Charities we have a tradition of welcoming everyone, and those we see at our Warming Station are no exception. To serve them, we rely on your generous donations. YOU make the Warming Station a reality year after year. This year you can help through the following: DONATE Donate ONLINE or call (412) 456-6912 today to help keep our neighbors warm. GIVE Help us keep our supplies stocked. We are in need of: Ground coffee, sugar packets, small snacks, oatmeal, and GLOVES. Contact us at (412) 456-6969 or
[email protected] to make a donation. VOLUNTEER We are also in need of volunteers to help serve. Please contact Katya Slater at (412) 456-6986 or
[email protected]. We know that we are called to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless. The kindness of our funders and donors make it possible for us to open our doors to the warming station 7 days a week as a place where the hungry can be fed and the cold and homeless can find safe shelter.
RESPECT LIFE CORNER What a powerful experience! On Saturday, February 16th, forty people witnessed for life on Kirkwood Street after the 8:30 am Saturday Mass at Sacred Heart Church. The Scripture reading from Genesis that morning described the struggle between the serpent [Satan] and the offspring of the woman [Jesus]. Twenty students from Franciscan University prayed and sang the “Salve Regina” at the end of their rosary. Members of our Knights of Columbus Council 3035 were in attendance along with people from surrounding parishes. Father Tim Krauthaupt [from St Peter, Brownsville] and others traveled an hour or more to participate. Father Tim led the Stations of the Cross and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Our prayerful presence on a cold February day petitioned God to change hearts and attitudes so as to build a civilization of life and love. Come join us on the first and third Saturday of the month!

ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Every Tree Is Known By Its Own Fruit – In grade school catechism class you may have been asked to learn and memorize the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, long-suffering, modesty and chastity. These 12 attributes are the means by which we come to understand how an individual is living in accord with the Holy Spirit. They are the work of God’s grace in our lives and the result of us tending to our hearts, making them fertile soil for the love of God to take root so that only good fruit can grow. Like any agricultural image that we use for faith, the Fruit of the Spirit requires both hard work and trust. A farmer works hard to till, plant, weed out and tend to his crops in order to reap a bountiful harvest. Yet, he also has to trust that the sun and rain will come in the necessary proportions to nourish what he has worked so hard to plant. For us, we have to work hard to weed out anything which seeks to harden our hearts or set up resistance to the work of the Spirit. Then, we must trust the ways in which the Spirit is at work to bear abundant good fruit in and through us. Nurturing the Fruit of the Spirit works for our good, the good of others and the good of the Church as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

“Souls sometimes say, with a mixture of love and ignorance, ‘I wish our Lord would love me more.’ But is that possible? Can He who loves infinitely love any more? If nothing else existed in the world except God and you, O soul who reads these lines, He would not love you more than he does right now. If you were the only object of His love, He would love you just as He loves you now.” Servant of God Luis Maria Martinez

The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly. 3. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. 4. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. 5. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. 6. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, or funeral wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

FOLLOWING THE MYSTICS
St. Francis of Assisi, the Reformer, radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded to transform the Church. St. Thomas Aquinas, the Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason are not at odds, as they come from the same source. St. Catherine of Siena, the Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond. Blessed John Henry Newman, the Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith. G.K. Chesterton, the Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity.
