"The Outsiders" Final Project 1. Imagine you are the publisher of the novel The Outsiders. Give a sales pitch to students in your class as though they are sales clerks for a major bookstore. Your goal is to make them want to promote this book to customers. 2. Draw portraits of three characters from the novel. At the bottom of each portrait page include the character's name and a brief description of his or her appearance and personality. 3. The Outsiders was first published in the late 1960's. Interview someone who was a teenager during that time and find out what the person did for entertainment. Also learn what concerns he or she had as a teenager of that era. Share your interview with the class. 4. Pretend you've been hired by a large video game company. Create a new game using the novel as the game's theme. Consider obstacles Ponyboy had to deal with in the story and incorporate those into the program. 5. Predict what Ponyboy's life will be like twenty years after Johnny's death. Create a collage that depicts his career, friends, family life, and hobbies at age thirty-four. 6. Imagine that the Greasers hold several fundraisers to erect a memorial in honor Johnny Cade's life. Decide where they would place the memorial, and what it would look like. Make a detailed sketch of the monument and include the inscribed wording that would appear on it. 7. Read other poems by the poet Robert Frost. Choose one you would like to recite for the class. 8. Create a PowerPoint presentation of eight novel characters. Include a description and favorite quotation for each character. Give your presentation to the class. 9. Research and write a report on the life of the novel's author, S.E. Hinton. 10. Locate and read another of S.E. Hinton's novels for young people. Titles include: That Was Then, This is Now; Rumble Fish; Taming The Star Runner; and Tex.
11. Work in groups of three or four to act out a favorite scene from the book. Wear appropriate costumes and act out the scene in front of the class. Have the class try and identify which chapter and pages your group chose to dramatize. 12. Write lyrics for "The Ballad of Dally Winston." Use a familiar song melody, and sing your ballad for the class. 13. Using a decorated shoebox, choose four to six artifacts that best symbolize important events in the novel. Share your selections with the class and explain why each one was chosen. 14. The publisher of The Outsiders has decided to print a "special edition" of the book to celebrate its forty years of popularity. They plan to make each chapter more appealing by including illustrations. Sketch twelve pictures (one to enhance each chapter) that the publisher could consider for use. Be sure to label each sketch with its appropriate chapter number.
