Summer 2016 College Course Options
Presentation Goals ● Understand your early college options ● Give you resources that will help you navigate your way through SLCC ● Understand college course options for Summer 2016 ● Understand the registration process for each option ● Understand the commitment summer classes require and the need for a back-up plan ● Review the Itineris Pathways and consider which one best fits your needs and circumstances
Starting Your College Education Students at Itineris can access college classes through the following options: ● Advanced Placement (AP) ● Concurrent Enrollment (CE) ● Early Enrollment (EE) ● Itineris Summer Courses
What is Concurrent Enrollment (CE)? ● Dual credit; grade goes on your high school AND college transcript ● Requires qualifying Accuplacer or ACT scores for many courses ● Must maintain a “C” or better to move forward ● $5 per credit hour paid to SLCC (a typical CE class will cost $15) ● CE courses may only be taken once. If you fail (or withdraw from) a CE course, you’ll need to pay full tuition to retake it
Please be familiar with SLCC’s Concurrent Enrollment web page:
slcc.edu/concurrentenrollment
The Student tab and the menu on the left is particularly helpful. You can find most of the information you need here.
Another great resource is the A-Z Index that can be found at
slcc.edu
You can quickly find almost anything you want by going to this index.
The A-Z Index at www.slcc.edu
The college and the Concurrent Enrollment office have been very good at making information accessible. ● If you are trying to figure out how to do something, they have probably made a video or a tutorial explaining how to do it.
● Look for these videos and watch them. They are very helpful.
Summer College Options There are two programs through which incoming Itineris juniors (current sophomores) may take college courses during Summer 2016: ● Early Enrollment (EE) ● Itineris Summer College Courses (only available to current Itineris sophomores) Most summer EE classes run on an 8 or 12 week term: ● 12 week term = May 16 - August 6 ● *8 week term = June 13 - August 6
Option 1: Early Enrollment • Allows high school students to attend regular SLCC courses prior to high school graduation • Credits may be applied toward both college and high school graduation • Some classes required for an Associate Degree or Certificate of Completion are NOT available through CE and must be taken through EE • Students are responsible for full tuition, fees, books, and other expenses (EE students are not eligible for SLCC financial aid or scholarships) • Advantage of EE: Greater course selection, more seats available
Applying for Early Enrollment • Students must demonstrate college-level proficiency by placing in ENGL 1010 AND MATH 1010 before applying • To apply for EE, students must submit all required documents to Student Services in the High Tech Center on the Jordan SLCC Campus. Required documents include: ❏ EE application (*MUST have driver’s license/learner permit number or State ID #) ❏ Copy of qualifying Accuplacer (or ACT) scores (75 or higher on reading and 55 or higher on elementary algebra) ❏ Official high school transcript (sealed envelope-do NOT break the seal on the envelope in your packet). If you are not currently a student at Itineris, request a transcript from your current high school. ❏ Parent Permission Form ❏ Permission letter from counselor
Applying for Early Enrollment ● Application Deadlines: • Recommend submitting application - ASAP • Priority Deadline for Summer 2016 - March 28 • Final Deadline for Summer 2016 - May 9 Applications for summer will NOT be accepted after this date ● Mandatory orientation must be completed before you can register for classes. Students who complete NetConnect will be able to register earlier than those who do not.) ● IMPORTANT- Apply for EE this spring only if you are planning on taking classes this summer.
