MONDAY, MAY 28—Memorial Day

Oneness, Unity of the Parish Do you ever think about the Why? Why does the Church exist? Why does the Diocese of Austin exist? What is the primary purpose of Saint Mary Cathedral? If you answer, “to glorify God and get people to heaven,” or, “to make disciples who make disciples,” you would be on solid theological ground. We are not simply a social club; an NGO that helps people; or a concert venue for sacred music every Sunday. We are called to BE the Body of Christ in the world today, to go and make disciples, to make

saints!

“I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving through to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:1-6) Our Lord himself prayed for this oneness the night of the Last Supper: “And I have given them the glory that you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” (John 17:23) This Oneness is a Core Value of mine, articulated as Unity of the Parish. Decisions are made in light of the whole, acknowledging that we form one community in Christ as a parish, part of the one local Church, the Diocese of Austin. We have various expressions of this community, various “neighborhoods” with our seven Sunday liturgies. Yet there is one mission: the mission of Christ. I ask you to pay special attention to the information in this week’s bulletin regarding Catholic Faith Formation and the Sacraments of Initiation. How we prepare for the sacraments as one community matters deeply: catechesis is not simply a matter of learning more about the Bible, our faith, the Catechism and our prayers. It is about encountering Christ in one another and growing and forming community as we journey together through the sacraments. I am especially concerned that we are able to serve those who hope to receive First Communion and Confirmation next year. Please review the policies for next year’s First Communion and Confirmation classes and contact our Catholic Faith Formation office for more information. Fr. Tim

Public Square Rosary Rally: Join fellow parishioners Saturday, June 9, to celebr ate the 101st anniver sar y of Our Lady’s second apparition to three children in Fatima. Portugal, which occurred June 13, 1917. Begin with 12:05pm Mass at the Cathedral; then gather outside in front to walk together to the sidewalk in front of the Capitol building. We offer reparation for the sins and offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary and will pray for the conversion of the United States.

Volunteer opportunities Lector Ministry will hold a new lector training for

anyone interested on Saturday, June 23 from 8:15-9:00am. We are currently in need of more lectors to serve at the 5:30pm Masses on Saturdays and Sundays. 5th Annual CATHEDRAL CHANT CAMP!

When: Tuesday, May 29-Friday, June 1, 9:30am—noon (Tues., Wed., Thurs.); 9:00am-2:00pm (Friday). Where: Bishops Hall. come from? Answer: Leaving more than just a memory, there are some events in our life that are truly transforming, making us different people. The same thing can be said of spiritual things, especially sacraments. A sacramental seal or character is a theological concept to describe the lifechanging and permanent effect of three sacraments on the person: Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that these sacraments confer a seal "by which the Christian shares in Christ's priesthood and is made a member of the Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to Christ and the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible" (#1121). Once we receive these sacraments, we are forever changed. It's a spiritual "point of no return" whereby we take a step forward in our faith journey. We are marked as people of faith, as those who have received the Spirit and as those called to serve in ordained ministry. That is why these sacraments are received only once. The direction is set, the choice is made, and we are called by God to be his people. Nothing can change that, not even our own sinfulness. © Liturgical Publications Inc.

Prayer for the Fallen God our creator and sustainer, today our country brings to our memory those who have defended this nation in times of trouble. They have sacrificed their lives to protect our shores from those who would limit our freedoms or enslave us to ways that are against your will. Bring all those who have died in service to our country into your heavenly presence. We humbly call down your blessing on those still serving; grant your heavenly protection to these men and women, and open your Sacred Heart to give them peace and comfort.
