Mary, Mother of the Church READINGS
To be observed on the Monday following Pentecost
FIRST READING either: A reading from the book of Genesis But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’ The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all who live. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Genesis 3.915; 20

or: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles After Jesus had been taken up into heaven, the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Acts 1.1214

RESPONSORIAL PSALM either: Ɽ You are the highest honour of our race. Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God above all women on earth; and blessed be the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth. Ɽ Your deed of hope will never be forgotten by those who tell of the might of God. Ɽ Judith 13.1819

or: Ɽ Glorious things are told of you, O city of God. The Lord loves the city founded on holy mountains, loves the gates of Zion more than any dwelling of Jacob Ɽ Glorious things are said of you, O city of God! But of Zion it must be said: “They all were born right here.” Ɽ The Most High confirms this; the Lord notes in the register of the peoples: “This one was born here.” So all sing in their festive dance: “Within you is my true home.” Psalm 87.12; 3 and 5;67

GOSPEL
either: Alleluia, alleluia. Happy are you, holy Virgin Mary, deserving of all praise; from you rose the sun of justice, Christ the Lord. Alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. John 19.2527

or: Alleluia, alleluia. O happy Virgin, you gave birth to the Lord; O blessed mother of the Church, you warm our hearts with the Spirit of your Son Jesus Christ. Alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Now standing there were six stone waterjars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. John 2.111
