MAUNU SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 6 Thursday 11 May 2017 www.maunu.school.nz Dear Parents and Caregivers, Term 2 is underway and what a seamless beginning we have had here at Maunu School. This is a term when many children are involved in winter sports activities. We wish them all the best in their trainings and games. It is important that children learn early on the importance of training and the commitment to the team if they are in a team sport. Training is an important part of personal growth and skill level as well as building up a strong and loyal team spirit. Unfortunately some professional sports people do not model this as recent events in tennis, rugby league and rugby union have shown. I would be as brave as to say that I do not consider them role models simply because they are good at a sport; I believe there are other qualities that we should be looking for. However, as long as there are consequences for poor decisions and actions, the message will filter to the younger generation. I would like to think that our Maunu children are great competitors and always reflect the Maunu School values and a positive attitude. To all the parents who support the children by coaching, managing, transporting and supporting from the sideline; a huge thank you. Yes, it can be very time consuming but I can assure you from experience, that it is worth every minute. The time you put into your children now, pays huge dividends in the future. Something else for us to consider is along the age old saying, “Many hands make light work”. The PTA is currently organising the Country Fair which is held in November and desperately want volunteers. Some time ago there was a move across New Zealand for parents/caregivers to give 5 hours a year to their child’s school. Over the 40 weeks of a year, this averages out at 7.5 minutes per week!!! But we all know that isn’t of that much use, so if you are able to give some or all of that 5 hours to the Fair, the PTA (and ultimately the children at the school) would be ecstatic! I also know that many of you give more than the 5 hours and thank you so much for your support. Keep on the look-out for Country Fair notices. School reports will be sent home on Thursday 22 June, with the 3-way conferences being held on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 July. There will be
further notices on how to book your conference time coming out shortly. Kind Regards, Paul Shepherd
ANZAC ASSEMBLY AND DAWN PARADE On April 7th we had a special school assembly for Anzac Day. We would like to thank Sergeant Jon Spence for working with the senior students and presenting at Assembly. The students that took part in the cross ceremony, read poems and laid the wreaths, all represented the school beautifully. On April 25th the following students attended and took part in the dawn parade: Brock Reid, Emma & Connor Lambert, Aidan Stroebel, Jessie King, Harry Trubshaw, Emma & Ruby Davies, Noah, Matt & Emerson Love, Greer Hughes, Isla Hamlin, Macey Johnston, Aaron & Ethan Halaapiapi, Ethan Gavin, Tiziana Schmucki, Annabel McIlhinney, Patrick Ganley and Caleb Walters. These students all met Mr. Love and Mrs. Turton at 5.15am and proceeded to march with all the schools through the town centre to the ceremony in Laurie Hall carpark. Macey Johnston & Aidan Stroebel laid a wreath on behalf of all Maunu School students. Check out the photos on the back page! MARSDEN BAY CAMP We had a fabulous camp at the end of term with the students from Room 11, 12 & 13. Our students were a credit to the school and their behaviour was impeccable. We would like to thank all the parents and wider whanau that supported us during camp, without your help these opportunities cannot be provided for our students. We would also like to thank the Hoyle family for their donation of lettuce to support the menu. PARKING AT THE BUS BAY A reminder for Term 2 to keep enough room for the school bus to park at the bus bay, 3.15pm each school day. Please don’t park right in front of the school gates – the bus needs lots of room to manoeuvre.
POMPALLIER COLLEGE ENROLMENTS There has been a change to one area of the preference for enrolment criteria for Pompallier College. This may have an impact on some students from Maunu School being able to enrol at Pompallier. Some students used a criteria called 5.4 which allowed sponsorship by a significant Catholic adult in the child’s life. Now that adult has been defined as someone “who is a close family member”. The details of this new requirement are on the College’s website www.pompallier.school.nz. Please check this out and if you are still unclear contact the College on 4383950. WELCOME NEW STUDENTS We are welcoming into our school the following new students Logan Thorburn in Room 5/6, Tyler Howard, Honor Hood, Charlie Cumming, Holly Herbert, Bentley Waetford-Parry, Kristen Levy, Everley McNamara in Room 3/4 and Bentley Waetford-Parry in Room 2. Wishing you happy times at Maunu School!

THANK YOU MAUNU SCHOOL FROM THE SPCA A huge “THANK YOU” to the amazing children at Maunu School for their outstanding fundraising efforts. They had an animal day where all the children came dressed as animals and raised $308.70!!! They also collected lots of food for the animals at the Whangarei SPCA. It is awesome to see young people making an effort to help the unwanted animals that get left at the SPCA every single day.
RUBBISH DUMPED BY CLOTHING BIN Unfortunately some people are choosing to dump household items/rubbish by the blue clothing bins outside the school on SH14. We have notified the recycling company and they are helping us with this problem. We are asking our school community that if you are going past and spot anybody dumping to please try and get their number plate (let us know in the school office) – without putting yourself at risk in any way. Many Thanks FAN TRAIL FOR THE LIONS RUGBY SERIES Well done to the children below who along with Molly North and Shona Anderson have helped to create ‘fans’ for the Lions Series Fan Trail. The fan trail will start at the Cameron Street Laneway in the CBD and take in the Town Basin and the Hatea Loop along the way to Toll Stadium. Our school along with other schools have been given the materials and a template of colours related to the rugby teams involved in the series and given free rein to create some colourful “fans”. The fans will be erected on the walk late May in time for the match on 3 June.
