I.
Introduction This guide is the official document that governs the rules for the Detroit Parks & Recreation Department Detroit Senior Olympics Hustle Dance competition. These rules will be implemented to maintain integrity, avoid confusion and promote fairness. Hustle Dance is defined as line dance, a choreographed dance in which a group of people move sequentially to music in one or more rows. The dance will have repeated steps/moves performed at the same time in the same directions or facing each other.
II.
Registration All dancers must register as a VIP Spectator of the Detroit Senior Olympics to be considered as a member of a team. If the team advances to the Preliminary Round/Olympics all team member(s) must upgrade their registration as an Athlete Registration, fee $15 (if registered as VIP Spectator fee is additional $5). Dancers will be assigned a number once they fully register for the Detroit Senior Olympics. The assigned number will be used for the dance competition and any other event dancer register for.
III.
Eligibility The following applies to all dancers: a. Must be at least 50 years of age; c. Must be confirmed through Detroit Senior Olympics Committee; d. Must register as a participant for Detroit Senior Olympics by June 1 or will be disqualified.
IV.
Qualification Hustle dance groups representing a Detroit Parks & Recreation Department’s Recreation Center must conduct tryouts within their respective site. After tryouts are complete the recreation center/senior organization will identify the dance group and submit their names to the Detroit Senior Olympics Committee by March 1st. The recreation center will work with the dance group to arrange practice time and provide space for practice.

Center Each center/organization will be allowed to enter one (1) group into the competition. If the center/organization has several senior participants they may enter an alternate group, who will only perform due to the failure of another center submitting a group. The alternate group will be qualified on a first come first serve bases, upon available vacancy.

Groups must be a minimum of 5 but nor more 10 members with 2 alternatives (note: alternatives will only be allowed to perform as a substitute); Groups can be co-ed, but not mandatory; All members must be at least 50 years of age; Group cannot be affiliated with another dance group; Group/members cannot be professional dancer.
Music Selection Dance group must submit song selection to the Detroit Senior Olympics committee for approval by December 1. The selection: a. Must be free of obscene and explicit language; b. Not to exceed four (4) minutes in length; c. Can be from any genre; d. At the discretion of the group can be any tempo.

The start of the dance competition will begin after the Detroit Senior Olympics’ Official announces the music selection to the judges and the introduction of the first group. Group performances will be performed in alphabetical order (i.e., Adams/Butzel Complex, Butzel Family Center, Clemente Recreation Center etc.) Judges will score each category between 0 – 20, with a maximum 100 points possible for each judge. Routines that are not original in nature will be assessed a penalty of up to 20 point deduction.

No excessive talking while other group(s) is performing; No obscene language or gesture use by any group before, during or after performance; Must check in 10 minutes before the start of the dance competition; Must be ready to perform when groups name is called.
Tie Breaker After all dance groups have performed and judges’ scores are calculated, if the results produces a tie, the Tie Breaker rule will go in effect. The tied teams will perform an additional dance to a different music selection of their choice. The selection must be clean of any profanity and/or explicit language. The performance cannot exceed 2 minutes. The judges will score performance 0 – 5 points. Tie Breaker score will be added to the score given in the Finals.

The performance(s) of the dance competition can be recorded and/or photographed for future promotional use by the Detroit Parks & Recreation Department, City of Detroit, Detroit Area Agency on Aging, Sponsors of the Detroit Senior Olympics and its affiliate(s) contracted to cover the event. The Hustle Dance Competition Official Rules may be modified (changed/updated) without prior notice.
