Thanks Richie Crawshaw
Room 8 would like to thank Richie Crawshaw for donating a Kauri sapling to our class. Mr Crawshaw doesn’t have any family at the school but found out that Room 8 were studying the Kauri trees on Toka Toka. We have called our sapling, Teina Mahuta. Several children have written to DOC about their concerns for the Kauri and their thanks for improving the track, which is currently closed. Teina Mahuta has also visited other classes to help spread the message about Kauri Dieback. Below senior students examine Teina, our Kauri sapling.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
the rest of the term at your school and to meeting many more of you during that time. Please feel free to call in and meet me when you visit the school. With the wet winter and very wet fields at school it is amazing to see how well 350 students play happily on the hard asphalt court surfaces and decks during intervals and lunchtimes. All classes have settled back into their work for the term. Rob Soar, Acting Principal.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Hi. My name is Rob Soar and I am the relieving principal at Dargaville Primary School for Term 3, while Mr Russek is away on sabbatical leave. I have been a teacher and principal around Whangarei for around 45 years. My teaching in Northland began at Kamo Intermediate School before I progressed to be teaching principal at Parakao School and Maungakaramea School. I spent 2 years teaching in Singapore in 2003 and 2004 before returning to NZ as deputy principal and then principal of Whangarei Primary School. Since retiring from being principal at Whangarei Primary School in 2013 I have done one or two terms a year as relieving principal at various schools around Whangarei and Northland. I am married to my wife Maureen, who is also a retired teacher and we have 2 daughters, who with their partners and 3 grandchildren live in Melbourne. Maureen and I live in Maunu, Whangarei. My interests include fishing, cycling, kayaking and rugby and I am still an active referee. I have enjoyed my first week and a half at Dargaville Primary and have been made to feel welcome by the friendly students, staff and parents/caregivers I have met. I look forward to

TEACHERS STRIKE
Kua tae te wā—It’s Time. The NZEI are meeting this week to discuss our campaign. It is likely there will be industrial action on August 15. Please start making arrangements for your children on this day. The main reasons for the strike is to tell the government that we need more teachers trained and that we need more teachers and resource staff to support students with additional learning needs. The strike is also calling for a fair and reasonable pay increase to enable more and better teachers to be recruited and retained. We already have difficulties in Dargaville finding sufficient relief teachers for when our permanent teachers are sick. Please come and have a chat with us this Friday 3 August before school, about the negotiations and what it looks like for us.
