Members of the Irish Nepalese Community to Hold Candle-Lit Vigil at GPO Tonight, 28th April 2015, at 7pm following Massive Nepal Earthquake Members of the Nepalese community in Ireland will be holding a candle-lit vigil and a candle sale fundraiser in front of the GPO in O’Connell St, Dublin, this evening at 7pm. The event will be mark of solidarity with their families, friends and communities back in Nepal following last Saturday’s huge earthquake which has (so far) killed 4,500 people, injured 8,000, and affected over 8 million people, many of them homeless and surviving outdoors. Member of the Nepalese community in Ireland will be selling candles in support of Concern Worldwide, the Irish aid agency which has worked previously in Nepal and is responding to the massive humanitarian needs there following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck the country last Saturday. “We are delighted that Concern Worldwide is responding to the earthquake emergency in our country,” said Nabaraj Koirala, Vice President of the Non Residential Nepalese Association of Ireland. “Local knowledge is vital in such circumstances and Concern has worked in Nepal in the recent past and they are familiar with Kathmandu and the wider region. The Irish Nepalese community is distraught at what has happened in our country and we greatly appreciate the huge support we are getting from the Irish people.” Concern Worldwide CEO, Dominic MacSorley added: “The Irish people have an incredible track record of responding to emergencies like this catastrophic earthquake in Nepal. Concern has a special connection with the country, having worked there up to 2010. The country was making great progress in terms of its overall development, so for it to be knocked back like this is a real tragedy for the country itself but, most of all, for the families and communities devastated by this terrible event. Our heartfelt support goes out to them and to the Nepalese community in Ireland.”
