Pentecost
Feast of the Ascension
T
oward the end of Jesus' earthly ministry it became inevitable: Jesus would physically be taken from their midst. What would happen to this movement so recently begun? If it was to be carried on with courage and vision, the little band of disciples stood in special need of prayer. Jesus offered the High Priestly Prayer, and asked God to grant them the same marks of the Spirit that we need today. In that prayer Jesus stressed three things, First, He wanted his disciples to know the Christian Gospel, not simply as a pretty story, but as God's eternal truth. Second, He prayed for his followers to be ready to bear witness to that truth by testifying in all areas of life. Finally, He desired that they be a people who find the fullness of joy by responding generously to God’s call. No less is asked of us today as was required of those who first heard the Good News proclaimed from the lips of Jesus himself. His words and his promise have motivated people throughout the centuries. Heroism is not necessarily achieved by great and mighty deeds. In God’s heart, heroes are simply those who have listened to the word of God and allowed that word to inspire and guide their response. The Lord continues to raise, in every age, men, women and children as outstanding witnesses of his saving love - those who fully accomplish His will in their every thought, word and deed. We need to take this word seriously and personally. “We” are the ones whom the Lord commissions to build the Church of today and of tomorrow. “We” are the ones who have the awesome privilege of leaving a legacy for future generations to enjoy. We, the members of St. John the Beloved parish, are not here to just ‘join’ a church, but are commissioned to ‘become’ a Church. We are called to fashion and ‘leave a legacy’ for future generations to build upon and maintain. We must do our part today in making the sacrifices that will bear fruit for tomorrow. We would be severely remiss to think we could leave that task to someone else. We need to renew our spirit, our vision, our promise, our goal to accomplish today everything we can possibly do, to fulfill the Will of God as best we can! Father...as you sent Me into the world, so I send them; Keep them from evil, and guide them in Your way. John 17: 11-19

(Wear Red to Mass)
he name Pentecost, which simply means “fifty,” was celebrated in Judaism as the fiftieth day of Passover. Both Passover and Pentecost were “pilgrimage feasts,” at which every able Israelite was expected to visit “the house of the Lord.” That is why the apostles and disciples of Jesus were once again found gathered together in Jerusalem. These were harvest feasts. In Palestine, the grain was sown In the fall and ripened in the spring; the barley ripened first, the wheat later. Passover, the feast of unleavened bread, was the day on which the first barley was offered to the Lord. Like-wise, on Pentecost, the first wheat was offered to God in thanksgiving for a good and bountiful harvest. By the time of Christ, many Israelites also connected this festival with the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai. It was a time of great joy as Jews from all over the known world gathered in Jerusalem to thank and praise God for the gifts they had received. It was quite fitting, therefore, that the disciples of Jesus were found together in Jerusalem. Still numb and fearful after the death of Jesus, they were praying to God for guidance. “What did all this mean?” they asked, “What do we do now?” Jesus had appeared to them in his risen state. He expected great things of them. He commissioned them to carry out his mission by using their gifts wisely. How could they possibly live up to his expectations? What means could they use? What resources did they have? What words could they speak? They prayed, and their prayers were answered! When the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, they received gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear (renewed respect) of the Lord. Their generous acceptance of these gifts signified the turning point for the rest of history! Filled with the Holy Spirit, they were able to proclaim their faith to the people gathered in Jerusalem from every nation, all at the same time! We are told that this Good News was immediately accepted by many people. It was taken home by these pilgrims to every part of the world. Because of this, the Christian Faith became “catholic,” or universal, very quickly. Since then, Christians have marked the beginning of the Church from that Pentecost because we, like those early followers of Jesus, know that we need to accept these same gifts if we are to continue the mission that has now been entrusted particularly to us. Naturally, we wonder how we might do this with our simple, humble and personal resources. But, not to worry! It is the Lord’s plan, not ours! All we need to do is trust. The Lord’s promises are being fulfilled, even now, even here! View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com
Catholic Communications Campaign Next weekend’s special collection will benefit the Catholic Communication Campaign. Through Internet, social networks, television, radio, and print, the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) helps the Church spread the Gospel message through the media locally and nationally. Half of all donations to the CCC collected in our diocese stay in our diocese to support our local communications needs, such as radio and television programming and diocesan publications. Your support helps spread the gospel message! To learn more, visit : www.usccb.org/ccc
Craft & Bake Sale The Women’s Club will be conducting their Spring Bake and Craft Sale the weekend of May 19th and 20th. These sales have always been so successful in the past due to your generosity and your sweet tooth! This sale promises to be just as delicious and have some lovely craft items, as well. Every penny we make goes right back into our many ministries that serve our parish and Summerville community. Thank you for your participation and support!
Good Neighbors Our neighboring churches have asked that we please refrain from parking on their properties during Sunday services. They each are happy to report an increase in attendance in both their Sunday schools and worship services and need all the spaces they have to accommodate their members. We are all too aware that our parking lots are too small but, unfortunately, we have no where to expand. Therefore we need to better utilize on street parking, even if it means a few extra steps. In Christian charity, we should always respect the property of all our neighbors and be sure we do not block their driveways or park on their lawns. They each thank us, in advance, for our courtesy and for our shared concern about these matters.

Scripture Reflection e often cite Jesus’ quote from today’s Gospel of Mark: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” This was not a suggestion from the Lord. It was quite frankly a command, and it is one which still holds for each of us. Being an evangelist, being a disciple, being a steward is not a matter of choice for those of us who are Catholic and Christian. It is something the Lord expects of us. Often we may like to spend time debating how to do that, but that does not lessen the fact that it is something we are supposed to do. We need to acknowledge that even the original Apostles and followers of Jesus did not do that immediately. We learn that they stayed in Jerusalem for some time, and it seemed to be only when the Church and its followers were persecuted that they began to reach out and truly share the “Good News.” Once Christians accepted that charge from the Lord, they did indeed take the Word of God to all corners of the earth. Look at the Church today. It is incredible how this Church has grown from one Man/God and a small group into what it is today. That does not, however, get us “off the hook.” As much as we may argue about how to carry out this command from Jesus, the fact remains that our very lives need to stand as a representation of what it means to be a Christian, what it means to “love one another,” what it means to live and to work as a disciple of Christ.
