Lower Elementary Music (K2nd Grade) 20142015 Outline MISSION Connecting people to each other and to God, through the gift of music. DESCRIPTION All Lower Elementary Students take Music as part of their core curriculum. In addition to studying music fundamentals, students sing in choir and perform 4 times each school year. GRADING RUBRIC Students in Lower Elementary Music are graded based on the following categories: Behavior—respect yourself, respect others, and respect property; Music fundamentals—understand the process of creating music and study the history of music and the people who bring music to life; Rehearsals—practice makes permanent, but PERFECT practice makes PERFECT; and Performances—the heart of music is sharing. Grading scale: I Achieves objectives and performs skills independently P Progressing towards achieving objectives and skills NT Needs more time to develop Music Skills: Steady beat; Echo singing; Sing with instrumental accompaniment; Quarter notes; Verse vs. chorus; Sing scripture songs and hymns; Listen to band and orchestra music Each student who fulfills all of the below requirements will receive a grade of I (achieves objectives and performs skills independently). 1) Student stays on task during class 3) Student understands music fundamentals taught during class 4) Student is present and on time to all performances and call times 5) Student is properly attired, performs satisfactorily, and behaves respectfully at all performances. Each student who does not fulfill all of the above requirements will receive grade deductions as follows: 1) Poor behavior or focus, i.e. not following directions, excessive talking, etc. 2550% of the time 1 increment per term, i.e. I to I (49 of 18 class periods) 5075% of the time 1 letter grade per term, i.e. I to P (1014 classes for 6th8th, 1521 classes for 5th) 75% or more of the time 2 letter grades per term (15 or more classes for 6th8th, 22 or more classes for 5th) 2) Inadequate understanding of and/or proficiency at music fundamentals deductions will vary based on class work and assessments 3) Missed performance 1 letter grade, i.e I to P (students who unexpectedly miss a performance due to illness or other family emergency may be allowed to do a makeup assignment, at the teacher’s discretion) 4) More than 15 minutes late to call time, but before actual performance time 1 increment 5) Improper attire, poor performance, poor behavior 1 increment or more, varies CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN In order to avoid any behavior problems, every effort is made by the teacher to keep students actively engaged during class. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner during all class periods and performances. This includes following directions, singing or playing an instrument appropriately, and with enthusiasm, and keeping excess talking to a minimum. Students who are unable to follow these guidelines will be disciplined accordingly. 1) First offense: Student will be given a verbal warning, no additional penalty 2) Second offense: Student’s name will be written on the board, no additional penalty 3) Third offense: A checkmark will be written next to the student’s name, classroom teacher will be notified to add penalty to classroom tally, a deduction and notation will be made on the student’s grade report 4) Fourth offense: A second checkmark will be added to the student’s name, the student will be dismissed from
the class (unexcused absence) to speak with the principal regarding his/her behavior, the parent(s) will also be notified via email to address the unacceptable behavior
REQUIRED ELEMENTARY PERFORMANCES All appointments are REQUIRED. Students who miss a performance for any reason will automatically receive a full letter grade deduction. Students who miss due to a family emergency or serious illness may be allowed to do a makeup assignment, at the teacher’s discretion. (Students in Kindergarten may be admitted to the choir at the teacher’s discretion.) Jubilate practices and performs a variety of styles of music, both secular and sacred. Students in Jubilate learn more about reading music and developing good vocal habits. Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays, from 3:003:45. To enroll, please email Ms. Eclar at
[email protected]. Cost for enrollment is $40 per semester, and should be paid to the front office. Grades are not assessed for Jubilate, however, students may be dropped from the ensemble at the teacher’s discretion, for poor attendance and/or poor behavior. No fee refunds will be made for students who choose to drop or are asked to leave Jubilate.
