The world’s ever increasing demand for energy is rapidly changing our environment and the need for energy efficiency in every aspect of our daily lives has never been greater.
What is Smart External?
‘Smart External’ is the latest addition to the Thorlux range of control systems bringing intelligent lighting control to a new range of exterior LED based luminaires. Massive energy savings and extended maintenance cycles are possible by combining programmable presence detection and light sensing with seven day programmable switching schedules. Truly fit and forget lighting.

WHAT ARE PLATFORMS?
PLATFORM 1 is suited to areas which do not require luminaires to be controlled in a group. Luminaires will switch on individually when presence is detected. Each luminaire can be specifically programmed to meet local needs. PLATFORM 2 is best suited to areas where group control is desirable. Typical applications include car parks and pedestrian routes leading to the building. It is ideal where access is required at any time of night. As soon as one luminaire’s Smart External Micro-pod Sensor detects movement, a signal is passed to all of the luminaires in the group which then illuminate. This provides a safe, well lit environment for staff as they move from the building to (and around) the car park. PLATFORM 3 is ideal for areas where luminaires are not needed to be on between certain times. It can also be used to minimise out of hours light disturbance to neighbours using time control to disable luminaires between specific times.
6
The Smart External system can operate at three different levels (platforms) offering increasing functionality. PLATFORM 1 : STAND-ALONE The simplest level. Each luminaire operates as a stand-alone unit and its functionality can be tailored to match local requirements (see pages 8 to 11). PLATFORM 2 : MOTIONLINE LINKED Groups of luminaires are linked with a two-core bus, called the ‘Motionline’, allowing each luminaire to pass presence detection to all luminaires within the group (see pages 12 to 15). PLATFORM 3 : TIME AND WEB BASED CONTROL Offers time schedule control, so that luminaires may be switched off when not needed (can be remotely configured through a secure web-site). Platform 3 also allows local configuration and manual override (see pages 16 to 17).

PRESENCE DETECTION
Traditionally, spaces such as car parks remain lit all night even when occupancy is low.
AMBIENT LIGHT CONTROL
PIR time delays can be adjusted using the Smart External Programmer (see page 11).
The Smart External Micro-pod Sensor incorporates an ambient light sensor which will enable at dusk and disable at dawn.
The Smart External Micro-pod Sensor built into each luminaire allows the lights to be switched off or dimmed down to a low output level when the area is vacated. As soon as the
Ambient light level switching can be adjusted using the Smart External Programmer (see page 11).
sensor detects movement, the luminaire will come back to full output.

One of the key benefits of the Smart External system is the ability to program every luminaire differently. Each luminaire can be tailored to suit its own very specific local requirements. 2 1The main programmable 3features are:4

30 Security delay This allows an interim delay (30 seconds 10 to 10 hours, or continuous) at Security level Factory setting 10 minutes at 10%.

Factory setting 8 6 7 10 minutes 10 minutes at 10% security level off. Min lamp The minimum dim level of the lamps can be set. Factory setting 10%. Max lamp The maximum lamp level can be set to tune the levels to local conditions. Factory setting 100%.
9
For example, all luminaires around the building may be set to switch off except for entrance/ 10 11 12 Mid-day exit areas which will reduce to 50%, for a further 3 hours (assuming no presence 90 detected). A typical example might be a large complex with a number of buildings connected by footpaths, and a number of car park locations around the perimeter of the site. As a person leaves an exit door leading to a particular car park late at night, not only does the footpath to the car park illuminate by Motionline, but so does the car park lighting, and the roadway leading off the site.
10
Another example might be the pedestrian walkway between two buildings, perhaps on a school or university campus, lit by Realtas (see pages 32 to 33) on the walls and Folio luminaires (see pages 26 to 31) along the footpath. As a person leaves one building, all of the luminaires along the route which had been lit at a reduced level, increase to full output.

As a car approaches the car park entrance, only the luminaire closest to the entrance is on, to illuminate the entrance. When its sensor detects movement, the remaining car park lights respond, instantaneously going to full output.

The Smart External Controller allows the user to set seven day switching times for the Smart External system.
This can offer significant advantages for sensitive locations where light pollution is an issue for occupants of neighbouring properties or for areas within secure compounds that are not accessed outside normal working hours. Control via two-core Motionline simplifies switching of larger areas and reduces the cost of the electrical installation.

The catalyst for developing outdoor LED products was the publication of BS EN 12464-2:2007. This standard calls for reduced light levels in many applications whilst placing more emphasis on uniformity, the quality of the lighting scheme and limiting glare. In parallel with the requirements of this standard there is generally a greater demand for limiting obtrusive light (more commonly known as light pollution) and for reducing energy consumed to help meet more stringent environmental considerations.
LED Exterior Luminaires
Point source LEDs provide excellent opportunities to direct light accurately where it is needed. This improves uniformity and reduces the electrical load. Well designed and manufactured optical components can provide the desired light distribution, optimising the spacing distance between luminaires whilst limiting glare and providing optimum energy efficiency. Some examples of typical illumination level reduction are shown below:

LED EXTERIOR LUMINAIRES LIGHT SOURCES
Discharge lamps have traditionally been the first choice for exterior lighting. Their dominance has been driven by high lamp efficacy and long lamp life providing reasonable through life costs. These financially driven benefits have however overridden their limitations, notably slow starting, slow run up times, limited dimming capability and poor lamp colour. Exterior lighting is often left on all night irrespective of whether it is actually needed. Over recent years white light LED technology has advanced to the point where it can offer a viable alternative to low wattage discharge lamp sources in external applications and opens up the opportunities for smarter control, reducing energy costs and extending maintenance cycles. LEDs produce white light, can be easily dimmed, switched frequently and normally last much longer than discharge light sources.
Not all LED solutions are the same and Thorlux has introduced a simple marking code to its literature to identify the key performance characteristics of its LED based luminaires.
Ra - Indicates colour rendering index (colour quality). 65 and above provides good quality for outdoor requirements. °K - The approximate colour temperature of the light source. There will be a band at which the LEDs are chosen from around this target figure. More accurate information, for specialist applications, is available upon request.
P/U - Some LED “lamps” comprise a number of LEDs connected in series or in a series/ parallel group. If the system is protected (P) then failure of a single LED will not affect others in the group. If the system is unprotected (U) failure of one LED will cause others in the group to extinguish.
% - This figure illustrates the LED driver efficiency.
L70/B10 - These figures illustrate the target
R/Rx - When the LED fails, some luminaires
life expectancy of the LED (for example 60K = 60,000 hour life expectancy) which is a combination of light out degradation (L70 = when the light output has reduced to 70% of its initial level) and lamp failure expectation (B10 = when 10% of the LEDs have failed).
require replacement in their entirety (Rx) some have replaceable LED “lamp” assemblies (R).
25
PF - Indicates LED driver power factor. LL/W - LEDs are constantly improving and new generations of LEDs have improving lumens per watt figures. We only show this information on web based electronic material as it can be easily updated.
