Ordinary Time: 15th Sunday

This week's readings: Amos 7:12-15 Psalm 85 Ephesians 1:3-14 Mark 6:7-13

This week’s readings focus on the role of a prophet, and remind us that prophets are often rejected. We are used to being challenged to accept prophets (usually long dead ones) and to heed his or her words (usually his). But what about the challenge of being prophets ourselves? A prophet is simply one who speaks for God, who proclaims that truth, especially when that truth is being ignored or violated in society. At baptism, we are given a share in the mission of Christ as priest, prophet and king. It’s in the words proclaimed in the rite of the sacrament. Do we have the courage to fulfill that mission? Do we have the courage to speak up at work, public meetings, family gatherings when unchristian attitudes are expressed? Do we write or email our elected representatives to urge laws that protect the needy and the environment? We are not called to prophesy on a part-time basis. We must speak the truth at all times, as Paul reminds, whether convenient or inconvenient.

Sister Parish Committee Please consider joining the Sister Parish Committee to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti. In 1994, St. John the Baptist began its Sister Parish relationship with St. Pierre in Baradères, Haiti. One of the reasons that parish was chosen was because of its tremendous need:

*It is very remote and difficult to reach *It is surrounded by water causing constant flooding and damage to homes and crops *The main source of industry, The Coffee Plant, permanently closed, leaving nothing to replace it The local government public schools suffer from a chronic lack of funds resulting in teachers failing to be paid for months at a time. Because of this, the public schools are often closed, which students don’t find out until they arrive at school for classes each day. The local Catholic schools fill that gap. There are two Catholic elementary schools in the town of Baradères, and 13 more in the 15 outlying chapels. Your contributions pay much of the teachers’ salaries at all these schools. Since 1997, there has

also been a Catholic high school in Baradères, Collège St. Jean Baptiste named after our own parish because it was co-founded and is supported through our donations. It is one of the finest high schools in Haiti, and its students surpass even those at expensive private schools in Port-auPrince in the national exam results. The Baradères community has made tremendous gains because of our involvement. We started out assisting evangelization outreach, providing sacraments, and vaccines for the young children. Our first expenditures for our Sister Parish included purchasing benches for the elementary school because children had been sitting in the dirt! Now the community not only has desks and teachers, they have some of the best schools in the nation! This is due to your contributions, parishioners of St. John’s. In order to continue this important and inspiring work, we need more volunteers. As you know, our parish is facing serious financial hardship. Our staff’s hours have been cut. Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation Our study of Ecclesiastes continues as we explore Chapter 4 and the first six verses of Chapter 5. Qoheleth does not surprise us by beginning Chapter 4 with the following cheery observation, “I saw all the oppressions that take place under the sun: the tears of the victims with none to comfort them! From the hand of their oppressors comes violence, and there is none to comfort them” (4:1)! The tears and the oppression of the poor make Qoheleth reflect on how uncontrollable and futile life can be. Qoheleth then comments that the dead are better off than the living (4:2). He also says the unborn are better off than the dead or the living (4:3). These statements combine with his main theme that everything is uncontrollable (“a chase after wind”) nothingness (hevel or vanity) to tell us something important. Everything vanishes into nothing and this is our joy! All things vanish into the nothing because all things, ultimately, are the nothing and everything returns to its source. The return happens when we accept hevel, when we “fear God” as Qoheleth says in 5:6. Some might object that while everything is hevel, vanity, meaningless, absurd, and enigmatic, there are still good things in life. It is good to have a spouse. It is good to pursue wisdom. Work is a good, too. Qoheleth seems to agree in 4:4-16. He notes, “Two are better than one…If the one falls, the other will help the fallen one…if two sleep together, they keep each other warm” (4:9-12). Relationships are a good, for there is strength and companionship in numbers. In support, he cites a common bit of ancient Middle-Eastern wisdom, “A threeply cord is not easily broken” (4:12). Work, too, is a benefit for those toiling “under the sun.” He recognizes laziness is a sign of foolishness. He cites the proverb, “Fools fold their arms and consume their own flesh,” (4:5) meaning fools don’t work and so don’t eat. Foolishness is bad no matter what. In this regard, wisdom, too, is such a good that he praises the poor person who is wise over the foolish king (4:13-14). Everything, though, is conditioned by Qoheleth’s main theme: hevel, hevel, everything is sheer hevel. So, whether it is work, wisdom, or relationships, everything “is vanity and a chase after wind” (4:4). There is no

unqualified good in this world. One translation from Rabbi Rami Shapiro determines that “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity” is “emptying upon emptying…everything is emptying” (both translate 1:1). All things are running out their existence. Everything – work, wisdom, our relationships, wealth, pleasure – passes away. Nothing in this world lasts. We ran into this issue with the vexing term in 3:11, “timeless,” which can mean “earthbound” or that we have no destiny after this life. It is the dead-end of secular life. Without transcendent mystery, which Qoheleth calls THE GOD, this life is all there is. If this life is all there is, then it is legitimate to ask whether anything we do or experience means anything at all. This is a dangerous line of thinking, for it has led many to contemplate suicide, since nothing really matters anyway. Then, why is Qoheleth bringing all this up? Isn’t this the Word of God? Isn’t this supposed to inspire us? God’s Word does inspire, but it is also truth. Qoheleth is making us face reality. We all die, and everything in our experience will fade away. The unborn and the dead from 4:2-3 raise the blessing of hevel: all things are not just running out their existence but are running into the divine nothing. Hevel is not only meaninglessness and impermanence but also the divine nothing present in all things. We can cooperate with this emptying, with hevel, by doing what Qoheleth says in 5:6: “Fear God!” Here is a major clue to the message and import of Ecclesiastes. As Qoheleth brings his wise and realistic critique to religious observance in verses 4:17 – 5:6, he says, “God is in heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few” (5:1). God is THE GOD, divine mystery and incomprehensible nothingness. God appears to be the source of and the goal of all hevel. Therefore, Qoheleth advises caution when making vows and restraint in speech because both are attempting to master reality, hevel, and, thus THE GOD. No one can manipulate the nothingness of THE GOD. Instead, says Qoheleth, “Despite many dreams, futilities, and a multitude of words, fear God” (5:6)! Fearing God does not mean being afraid but surrendering to the nothingness of THE GOD. It is a summons to the most radical faith here and now. Such is our hope and our lasting happiness.

The Story of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah in northern Israel in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726, it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carmelites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. Saint Teresa of Avila called Carmel “the Order of the Virgin.” Saint John of the Cross credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel, and helping him escape from prison. Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion day, Thérèse dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition—which may not be historical— that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary’s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way.
