JROTC TO CONDUCT DISCOUNT CARD FUNDRAISER JROTC will conduct a fundraiser consisting of a discount card with 16 local businesses offering various discounts for their products or services. The popular discount card sells for $10 and is valid until January 1, 2012. The card is reusable and may be used once a day at each of the 16 businesses. The fundraiser will begin on December 9th and will conclude on January 10th, 2011. JROTC hopes to sell 450 of the cards. Funds gained from this fundraiser will be used to help pay for JROTC activities such as award shows and special team equipment—things the school and the Air Force do not fund. Cadets must obtain parent permission prior to participating in the fundraiser. JROTC is offering cash rewards of $75, $50, and $25 to cadets who sell the three highest number of cards. School rules do not allow cadets to sell cards on campus before, during, or after school everyday since JROTC will keep all funds gained from this fundraiser activity. JROTC hopes to profit $3,000 when the fundraiser concludes the day students return to school after Winter Break. The photo to the right shows the front of the discount card with the 16 businesses listed underneath.
Businesses on the discount card include: Burger King Pacific View Cleaners Big Nick’s Pizza Palos Verdes Bowl Buono’s Pizza Puesto Del Sol Cold Stone Sandwich Saloon Del Taco San Pedro Beauty Center Johnny Rockets Sizzler Midas Sorrento’s Italian Ono Hawaii BBQ TGI Friday
FORMER CADET DONATES FLAG FLOWN IN IRAQ Former SPHS JROTC cadet Daniel Wilson joined the United States Air Force after graduating high school in 2002. He currently works as an F-16 maintainer. His assignments include Hill AFB, Utah and Kunsan AB, South Korea. He is currently assigned to the 777th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Unit at Balad Air Base, Iraq. Daniel still has close ties to SPHS JROTC and recently surprised the cadets by sending a US flag that had flown over Balad AB on October 1, 2009. Accompanying the flag was a certificate of authentication that the flag
was flown over Joint Base Balad, Iraq on that date. Additionally, the flag flew on three different aircraft while completing real-world combat missions in 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On August 13th, the flag flew on a C-130 Hercules, aircraft 62-1834. On August 20th, the flag flew on a HH-60G “Pave Hawk” Search and Rescue Helicopter. And on October 25th, the flag flew on an F-16M, aircraft 91-0351, while patrolling the skies over Iraq. The pilots of all three aircraft signed certificates of authenticity to accompany the flag.
