THE JOURNEY OF FAITH WITH
Fr. Matthew Oakland A Steward is one who has been entrusted with the care of something which is not their own. In Genesis, we hear that we are stewards of the earth. Adam and Eve were given care of creation. It was not theirs to do with as they please—rather they should proceed with the owner, the Creator, in mind. And one day the Creator will judge them based upon whether they were a good steward or not. Jesus often uses parables to teach us—and there are several parables about good and bad stewards. Everything that we have really isn't ours. When we die, that which we have will pass to another—we do not get to take a U-Haul with us to the afterlife. The goods of the earth are always first and foremost the Lord’s. With this wonderful gift of Creation, we must be good stewards—not taking for granted precious resource, ensuring that its bounty supplies for those who hunger, etc. We must remember that an accounting will come when the Master returns. “How can I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me?” It is the question the psalmist asks. God is generous with us. How generous are we with Him? How are we as stewards with all that God has given us? With our time? With our talents? With our treasure? A few weeks ago we reflected on the gifts God has given to us and how we might use them to serve him. In the coming weeks, we will reflect upon the stewardship of our treasure. Each week, each month, we incur a variety of expenses. Some big, some small. We pay a mortgage or rent, insurance and car payments, electricity and heat and water and garbage, food and a gift for a birthday party, clothes for the coming rain, some coffee from our favorite joint, tickets for a play or a concert or game, and a variety of other things. As we look at our stewardship of our treasure, it isn't just a question of how much to give to the Church and to other charities, but also a question of our stewardship of the rest as well. When I got out of seminary and started making a real income (vs small jobs here at there working in the library or the Catholic TV Station), I started to put together a budget. I created this chart of how I wanted to spend my money. And then I tracked my receipts, and realized that my plan and my actual spending habits were quite different sometimes. And then I asked myself some questions—am I being a good steward of my resources? Am I using them wisely for myself and others? And where does the Lord fit into it all—not just that portion that I give to the Church and charity, but with the rest as well? When it does come to that portion given to the Church, there are four Ps to keep in mind. Planned Giving Our giving should be planned. It should be done after reflection upon God’s great gifts for us. It shouldn’t simply be an afterthought, a scramble as the basket nears. Rather, if it is to truly come from the heart, if it is to be a true offering, it should be one made intentionally after prayer. To be a good steward is to recognize the gifts that we have received, and plan their proper allocation, whether for taxes, food, housing, recreation, or directly to the Lord. Priority Giving Abel brought the first fruits of his flock as a sacrificial offering, his return to the Lord. He wanted to give the Lord his best. He wanted to make this offering to God a priority in His life. One of the benefits of planning our giving is that we can make it a priority in our budget. We don’t simply give from our surplus, from what is left over at the end of the month. Rather, we make our offering a priority in our lives as we recognize Him from whom all good things come. Percentage Giving Abel was the first to make the scriptural tithe. Abraham, Jacob and countless others would follow as they fulfilled the Law, a Law which was commended by Christ Himself. As we look at our budget, as we plan our giving, we should strive to follow the example of the saints with the biblical tithe. It should also be a sacrificial offering, for it means little if our offering does not actually impact us. The offering of our time and talents is important. But we are called to make a return to the Lord of all of our gifts, not just some them. Zaccheus was able to give over and above the norm. This is something that is commendable and laudable, and is possible for some. What portion of your income do you return to the Lord? Another hard question I ask myself—where do my donations rank compared with entertainment and recreation? Nothing wrong with the latter—but in some ways we should make the Lord a priority. Progressive Giving I would encourage you to take a step each year, as each year we return to prayer, reexamine our gifts, adjust our plan. As you look at your current giving, consider raising it. If you have had a change in income or life situation, it can affect your giving. But the purpose is that our intention should be to increase our generosity with God over time. Take the weeks about what offering to the Lord will be here at Holy Rosary this year. 2 some time 4139in 42nd Aveahead SW to pray Seattle, WAyour 98116 206-935-8353 www.holyrosaryseattle.org
