The pallet does have a rough surface, but there could be a crack or two that could need attention by filling with a bit of wood filler. Lightly sand and wipe off with a lint-free cloth.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS Basecoating the Palette Box To basecoat, use a dampened wool sponge, squeeze out the excess water, pick up Payne’s Grey on the sponge, dance over the entire box to achieve an opaque coverage.

Following the label on the Glazing Medium, mix with Country Blue + a shot of water. Pick up the mixture on a dampened wool sponge, pick up the blue mixture on the sponge, dance off on your palette, dance over the surface and side edges of the box.

When dry, lightly mist over the surface with the matte spray. After the matte spray has dried transfer the design (except the bats) to the surface using the graph ruler. To aid in the transferring of any straight lines, drag the stylus along the ruler’s edge.
Moon Basecoat the moon with two light coats of Golden Straw using the 8 filbert. When dry, dampen the area around the moon with clean water, float around the moon with a wash of Golden Straw for a tint. Corner load the angle with thinned Tangelo Orange, float a tint on the bottom right of the moon and a bit on the night sky, to the right of the moon.
Hill Corner load the angle with Country Blue, float a wide highlight along the front side of the hill, floating down into the hill.
Background Pines With a pencil and graph ruler, transfer the center line for each pine. Work only on a couple of pines at a time. Slightly pre-dampen the surface area with clean water. This will help the paint bleed, giving the boughs a softer effect and in the distance. Use the 8 filbert loaded with the Lamp Black across the chisel edge. Then, up on the chisel edge, slightly pull the top of the pine. Tapping from left to right for
the boughs, slowly and slightly widening as you work towards the base of the pine. Allow a bit of the background to show through so the pine doesn’t look like a triangle. When dry, randomly repeat tapping the Lamp Black over the boughs to deepen a few areas. Repeat the same steps with the remaining pines. Then repeat the steps with Golden Straw, randomly tapping over the boughs for highlights.
Background Shrubs With the sm or med Texture brush and Lamp Black, dance in the shrubs behind the structure settings. Repeat this step. Note that the foreground shrubs will be completed after the design has been completed. Then with Golden Straw, randomly dance over the tops of the shrubs for highlights. Note that the Texture Brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. For the proper use of the Texture Brush, use the following method: Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpendicular to your palette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off—keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Next, tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in different directions in between your fingers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Allow some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don’t end up with a globby or muddy look.
Basecoating Structures With the appropriate size shaders, basecoat the lighthouse setting with Bleached Sand, structure #1 with Bahama Blue, structure #2 with Lavender, and structure #3 with Turquoise Blue.
Lighthouse Setting
With thinned Golden Straw and the 8 shader, float over and around the lens room area. Next, tap a little tint across the bottom of the lens with Tangelo Orange. Corner load the angle with Golden Straw, float a highlight across the top of the roofs. Also add thinned tints of Golden Straw randomly on the walls of the structures, tower and hill. With the 5/0 liner and Lamp Black, pull the side roof lines. Repeat with Golden Straw strokes for highlight. Then with the 5/0 liner and Bleached Sand, pull the roof trim lines. Place a Lamp Black dip dot at the top of the lighthouse roof for the ventilator ball. Then with Lamp Black and the 5/0 liner, pull a line up from the ball for the lightning rod. Now add the line under the lens room and watch room. Pull the windows in Lamp Black using the 2 shader. Then with the 5/0 liner and Bleached Sand, pull the window panes.
Structure Setting Wash over the left two walls and the one right wall with Payne’s Grey using the 4 shader. Then corner load the angle with Payne’s Grey and float a shade across the top of the opposite walls. Basecoat the roofs with Lamp Black using the 6 shader and the chimneys with the 0 shader. Then corner load the angle with Golden Straw and float a highlight across the top of the roofs. Add thinned tints of Golden Straw randomly on the walls of the structures. With the 5/0 liner and Lamp Black, pull the side roof lines. Repeat with Golden Straw strokes for highlight. Then with the 5/0 liner and Bleached Sand, pull the roof trim lines. Next pull the windows in Lamp Black using the 2 shader. Now with the 5/0 liner and Bleached Sand, pull the window panes.
Wash over the right side wall of the right structure with Payne’s Grey. Then corner load the angle with Payne’s Grey, float shading across the top of the opposite walls of structures and a wide shade down the right side of the tower.
Foreground Shrubs
Basecoat the watch room and roofs with Lamp Black using the 2 shader. Then basecoat the lens with Golden Straw using the 0 shader.
Transfer the bats to the surface and basecoat with Lamp Black using the 2 shader.
Repeat the steps in the Background Shrubs instructions to complete the foreground shrubs using the med Texture brush.

With the Cob Web stencil and Bleached Sand, stencil over the top left corner using the med stencil brush Then position the stencil on the surface refer to photo for placement and secure with the Frog Tape, stencil adhesive or hold with your fingers. Load the med stencil brush with a bit of Bleached Sand, swirl the brush on a blue shop towel to remove excess. Apply color in a circular motion one direction and then in a circular motion in the other direction (changing directions frequently) over the stencil. Fill in some of the design fully and leave other areas incomplete. When completed, this application should have a slight distressed appearance. If it is too solid or perfect, simply use a moist piece of the blue shop towel with a little Faux Glazing Medium, to gently rub away some of the excess color. Carefully remove stencil by holding one end with your fingers and lifting the opposite end Clean stencil and brush immediately using the DecoMagic Cleaner.
Jack-o-lantern Basecoat the jack-o-lantern with two coats of Tangelo Orange using the 12 shader. The basecoat will have a blotchy effect, but will aid in shading. Corner load the angle with Antique Maroon, float shading to the left to create the section of the pumpkin. Then corner load the angle with Golden Straw, float highlighting along the outside left edge of the jack and to the right of the section. Basecoat the features with one coat of Golden Straw using the 6 shader. Then corner load the angle with Tangelo Orange, float tints along the right sides of the features.
FINISHING To protect your painted piece, varnish the entire box with the Dura Clear Matte Varnish using the Oval Wash Combo brush. This brush doesn’t leave any brushstroke marks after the varnish has dried. For any questions concerning this design you can contact Debby at
