Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) It’s download Sunday — download our parish app today! See how in this bulletin. (2) I am pleased to announce that as of December 23, Good Shepherd Parish had exceeded its 2016 diocesan Appeal goal. 789 donors pledged $185,495 to surpass our $180,726 goal by a 2.7% increase. I am grateful to parishioners who made this possible. Fortunately, because our parish sponsors a Catholic school, we still will receive a “kickback” of at least $19,600 if all pledges are paid up. (3) On January 4, Bishop Deeley promulgated Three Beliefs, a guide for Maine Catholics regarding end-of-life decisions. This 20-page document offers valuable assistance and guidance to Catholics and others on a variety of end-of-life issues. It explains Catholic teaching on life-sustaining treatment & care, and includes the Maine Advance Directive form modified to ensure consistency with both Catholic teaching and Maine law. In addition, the document features a helpful FAQ section and wallet cards containing important information for health-care providers. We will receive several copies for our use, but the document will be available in its entirety at www.portlanddiocese.org/ threebeliefs. (4) During the winter when attending Mass, please take care to ensure all doors are closed behind you! Sometimes the doors at our churches don’t close properly because of salt, snow or ice buildup. If you find this to be the case, please alert an usher or as you are able, take a few seconds to clear it, so to ensure a tight door seal on those cold days. The more we are all aware of this, the more we reduce heat loss and practice prudent use of resources. I am grateful for your care and assistance. (5) Parish sponsorship of Scouting: As of January 1st, the Biddeford Knights of Columbus transferred sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 308 and Cub Scout Pack 308 to Good Shepherd Parish. Nationally, the Knights are adjusting their efforts to be more focused on parish ministries instead of duplicating efforts (which is why the Squires program has been dropped in favor of parish youth ministry). Nevertheless, leaders of the local Knights intend to remain as involved as possible and even agreed to pay the 2017 sponsorship fees. Although some of these boys are not Catholic, it is my hope that the parish can find a way to become more involved with the troop and pack, perhaps for example, by promoting our faith formation programs among the boys and their families. I am happy to say this was a very smooth transition. By the way, because of parish sponsorship, scout leaders will be required to undergo background checks and the Protecting God’s Children training programs required of all adults who work with children and vulnerable adults in the Diocese of Portland. (6) Parishioners sometimes ask me for suggestions on how to jumpstart evening prayer or prayer before bedtime, especially when they are tired or when they have a hard time making it a part of their daily routine. I always urge them to take small steps to move ahead and to consider a prayer form based on the Blessed Trinity; this can take as little as 3 minutes. Begin by remembering any graces, blessing or especially happy experiences you received that day; thank God the Father for those blessings. Secondly, call to mind any sins you may have committed that day; then ask God the Son to forgive you for those sins. Third, enumerate your personal duties and challenges for the following day; then ask God the Holy Spirit to guide you through them. Conclude the three-part reflection with a Glory be… This prayer form may also be fruitful for group or family prayer. (7) Thank You of the Week: To the parishioner who made it possible to provide remote coverage of the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass in St. Joseph Church Hall with the help of a cameraman, ushers, a cantor, and Eucharistic ministers. Thank you! JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne: A friend was trying to encourage his elderly mother to enjoy the money she had accumulated through frugal living. “Mother,” he said, “you have enough money to last until you’re a hundred.” “and then what’ll I do?” she asked. Confessions on Saturdays (or by appointment): 3:00 pm at Most Holy Trinity, St. Joseph and St. Margaret 3:30 pm at St. Philip

St. James School is Service, Academics, Faith, & Excellence St. James is a Catholic, parochial school committed to fostering spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional & physical growth in a S.A.F.E. and collaborative environment while empowering students to be creative, to think critically, to act responsibly, and to serve with integrity.
Students were given a challenge to make something that looked like a Christmas tree, and see how tall they could make it using a variety of materials. These young engineers certainly succeeded in reaching new heights! Way to go!

There are many ways that you can help Saint James School. Here are three more: Do you shop at Target? If you use your Red card and list Saint James School in the Take Charge of Education section, Target will donate 1% of your total purchase to Saint James School. You are not spending any more money, but a portion of the money that you already spend will go to Saint James School. Please go online and make sure that Saint James School is the school chosen on your account to receive this money. We continue to collect Box Tops for Education. The symbol looks something like this one. This symbol is on hundreds of products that you already purchase. If you take a moment and cut them out, the school gets ten cents for each box top. Keep a bag and fill it up with these box tops; when it is full, send it over to Saint James School. A program similar to this is called Labels for Education. Just take the label off the product and save it for Saint James School. We know that many of you already do these things and we would like to thank you. We hope that you had a most blessed Christmas recently. We have a lot to be thankful for, and having Good Shepherd Parish behind our school is something for which we are most grateful.
Prekindergarten students visited our school librarian and read books about Christmas, and then did a Christmas craft afterwards! They were so proud to pose for this picture!

Good Shepherd Parish
The Epiphany of the Lord
Parish & Family Life All men of Good Shepherd Parish are invited to join us for our new TMIY! Program, starting Sat., Jan. 14, titled, "The Bible and the Sacraments". “The Bible and the Sacraments is a dynamic video-based Bible study that dives into the mystery of these God-given channels of grace and illuminates the deeply scriptural roots of the sacraments. By examining the rich relationship between the Old and New Testaments and their connection to the rites of the Catholic Church, The Bible and the Sacraments reveals how God has always dealt with humanity in a sacramental manner. This visually stunning 11-lesson series explores the sacraments and shows how, finding their institution in Christ and their origin in salvation history, Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, and Holy Orders are God’s gifts of life and love to His children.” **Meetings are Saturdays in the youth room downstairs at MHT. A Message for the New Year from Bishop Robert P. Deeley
Each year, the dawn of a new year inspires us to reflect on the blessings and graces of the past twelve months and to look ahead with the good intentions of being a better person. In that spirit, a worthy focus of our efforts in 2017 would be to remember the lessons learned during the recently concluded Jubilee Year of Mercy. The many corporal and spiritual works of mercy that were carried out in our diocese were transformative experiences for those who reached out to those facing need, and a renewal of hope and a connection to the merciful love of God for those who received. I am deeply grateful to God for how I have witnessed our clergy, parishioners, and community members live out this message of the mercy of the Gospel in so many ways. Though the jubilee year is over, join me in ensuring that its message and meaning carry on in 2017 and beyond. Be merciful to those in need, welcome immigrants and others who have come to our country seeking peace and a better life, recognize injustices and work to correct them, and defend the dignity of God’s gift of life. The year has reminded us to trust more deeply in God’s love for us and to turn more often to receive His mercy. Pope Francis opened the “door of mercy” to remind the world to experience God’s mercy. As a new year begins, let us commit to continuing to walk through that door by bringing love and mercy into our world. This is a resolution that truly allows us to live as Jesus taught and to witness to the message of the Gospel. Happy New Year! May you and your family know the blessing of the peace, love, and mercy that God gives us in Jesus.
