Fulfilling the dream
A Message from our President Our 154 freshmen recently had their first retreat at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. The day ended with a Mass in our little chapel. You could feel their enthusiasm. I am sure they didn’t notice the broken windows, the stained walls, the falling plaster, or the broken pews. They were simply happy to be at Cristo Rey, desirous of placing their hearts in God’s hands, and hungry to have their spirits nourished.

The Virgin of Guadalupe gave Juan Diego the mission of building a church for the poor indigenous people so that they would have a place of refuge, a place to experience God’s love for them. Juan Diego’s mission continues here at Cristo Rey. As a Jesuit Catholic college preparatory high school, this chapel is essential. The chapel is ideally located at our entrance and will remind us all of our mission, to form Christian leaders for tomorrow, true companions of Jesus.
A few days later, I was in the chapel with a couple of benefactors. I am grateful that we have people coming forward who share our dream of finishing I am still begging for money to have this become our campus with a renovated chapel. It will be a a reality, but as you can see from this Annual beautiful place for our students and families to Report, we continue to be blessed with generous
benefactors. I thank God that so many of you continue to express your faith and love by sharing your blessings with our students. These 154 freshmen love being here at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. They have dreams of a better future because of your faith in them. They are grateful for the opportunity to be here at Cristo Rey, a gift you give them. May God continue to bless you and your families, and thank you for believing in us. God bless.

Memo Cruz: Cristo Rey Class of 2003 Here at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School we always like to share how well our alumni are doing throughout Chicago and beyond. Guillermo “Memo” Cruz is the perfect example. Memo attended Cristo Rey from 1999 to 2003, after hearing about our school from Fr. Gartland and Fr. Foley since the age of 8. He only has good memories from his high school years, and can remember classes that he took as well as activities he took part in.
In addition to the Alumni Network, Memo is also giving back in other ways. He currently coaches the school’s flag football team in the fall and boy’s volleyball in the spring. He has some fond recollections of being active in sports: “I was part of the founding line of flag football at Cristo Rey. “Laz”(Matthew Lazarado, a former science teacher) was very helpful getting us started and helped us become the 1st team at Cristo Rey to bring back a trophy to the school.” He goes on to say that “Laz became a role model to us, he was able to relate to students.” Memo has already become a role model to the students both on and off the field. His CIP job helped him get to where he is at professionally. As a student at Cristo Rey, Memo worked at AON, and now he is part of its Global Network. “I get to work with clients such as Live Nation, who organize mainstream concerts” he mentions, “and having had great relationships ever since my high school years with people inside the corporate offices, working in the H.R. department and going back during my school breaks, I didn’t have any doubt this was the place where I wanted to work.” Now Memo administers accounts with clients in the Global Network covering over 110 different countries.

Companions of St. Ignatius Loyola, S.J.
A self described “pilgrim” from Spain, St. Ignatius Loyola, S.J. found himself drawn into the world and into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Ignatius (1491-1556) studied at the University of Paris where he realized the value of education in forming the hearts and minds of the people of God. Members of the Ignatius Loyola Companions are recognized for their commitment to the enduring mission of providing Jesuit education to present and future generations of students in the Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods.

Companions of Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J. Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro Juárez, S.J. brought preaching and the sacraments to various parts of Mexico City. Miguel Pro (1891-1927), a priest and martyr, finished his secondary education by uniting his efforts to a life of prayer. Executed as part of the persecution of Catholics in Mexico, Miguel Pro shouted, “Viva, Cristo Rey!” as his life ended. Members of the Miguel Pro Companions are acknowledged for providing substantial backing for Jesuit, Catholic, college preparatory education for future leaders in their community.

Father Pedro Arrupe, S.J. was a Basque-born Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Arrupe (1907-1991) witnessed the destructive power of humanity in Hiroshima but remained “full of hope” throughout his life. He coined the phrase “men and women for others” as a challenge to Jesuit students to be more committed, more Christ-like, in working to overcome injustice in our world. Members of the Arrupe Companions are acknowledged for their commitment to fostering the Christian desires of men and women whose focus is other-centered and life-giving.
