The 2016 Junior Gold Cup program again saw Brumbies teams selected in the U17 and U15 age groups to compete in the National Gold Cup Championships. Each age group has 24 teams across the country, ACT again performed exceptionally with the 15’s group making their Grand Final and the 17’s falling just short with a close loss in the Semi-Final a week earlier.

U17’S Junior Gold
For the 17’s group, last years winners of the National Competition, fell one game short of being WA Force 24 (Matthews 2, Hastie and Murray able to defend their title, but a plus to this very tries; Leituala 2/4 conversions, 0/3 penalties) defeated ACT Brumbies 14 (Jake Herse and Matt Pari- talented group is that in 2017 the majority of this group return for another crack at Junior Gold sotto tries; Wez Alexander 2/2 conversions) Glory. The Brumbies U15s quest for Junior Gold Cup glory fell agonisingly short as the WA Force made it back -to-back championships. Played in constant drizzle at the picturesque home of the Cottesloe Rugby. With a greater share of possession and better field position the Brumbies took a 7-5 lead at the 11th minute following a try by Jake Herse and a conversion from Wez Alexander.

The Brumbies were forced to make an unplanned changed following an injury to Harry Newby in the opening minutes of the second half and soon after the Force took a 7-12 lead with a converted try. Whenever the Brumbies had extended period of possession they always threatened to score and midway through the second half they took a 14-12 lead following a try from Matt Parisotto and another successful conversion from Wez Alexander. In the 55th minute the Force took a 14-17 lead following a try. The referee appeared to indicate
It was a mixed competition for the 17’s group with a couple of close losers at each end of the tournament which ultimately ruined the teams chances of defending their 2015 title. Plenty of positives came out of the group and with the talent this group possess, no doubt they will be there again, contesting for the title in 2017. Each day the kids got a chance to watch the Brumbies train and on the first day which saw a lot of our youngest kids attend, Ben Gathercole (Brumbies Team Manager) took the kids on a little tour of Brumbies HQ. Over the 3 days close to 130 kids participated across the 3 days with an average of about 35 kids per day. Majority of the kids came from in and around Canberra, but it was great to see kids from SIRU and Monaro/South Coast regions attend.

High School 7’s Gala Day With the 2015 High School 7’s Gala Day not going ahead due to lack of numbers, it was very exciting to see that 2016 saw the return of the High School 7’s and even more exciting was the announcement of the new venue, Southwell Park, Lyneham. Was great to see Radford College return to our Gala Days , along with Telopea High School. The day was played at high spirit with plenty of exciting, fast paced 7’s played across all age groups. All teams got to play 3 games in the pool stage with the top 2 playing in the finals. From here the 2 teams who competed in the finals qualified for the Brumbies Finals Day in May, where they get to come up against the best schools across the South Coast/Monaro and SIRU regions. Boys 7/8 Final saw John Paul II College come up against a spirited Queanbeyan High team but in the end John Paul secured a 15 to 0 victory. Boys 9/10 Final again saw John Paul II compete for the trophy, making that 2 finals in the day but this time they came up against a strong Radford College. A game that went down to the final whistle, both teams locked at 15 all when the final whistle blew. Sadly for John Paul , competition rules favored Radford College due to Radford scoring the last points in regulation time. Girls 9/10 was played as a 3 match series between Alfred Deakin High and St Clare’s across the day. St Clare’s went on to win all games but Alfred Deakin girls improved every game and really made St Clare’s work for their final victory, with a 10 to 5 score line to St Clare’s.
Boys Finalists Erindale & Canberra College
College 7’s Gala Day For the 5th year running the Aquis Brumbies development team ran the College 7’s tournament which saw 12 boys teams and 6 girls teams compete to gain a spot into the Brumbies 7’s Finals day on the 4th May. Erindale College and Canberra College came into the day as favorites in the boys division as they were last years finalist and Erindale College and Lake Ginninderra High in the girls. With some very close pools games and some upset victories across both the boys and girls divisions, with the favorites in both divisions making the finals. All finals were played in high spirits, with running rugby on the menu. Erindale College came out victories in both boys and girls divisions, capping off a very successful day for the school. The Goulburn High School 7’s saw teams from Boorowa Central School and Moss Vale High School compete for the first time. The nature of 7’s allowed for those new to the sport to excel and put in some good performances on the day. The Mulwaree coach could be heard calling ‘sing’ to his well-drilled team, after which the ball would inevitably be shifted to the sideline for a try scoring opportunity. Trinity put in a good show winning the 7/8 boys and girls, 9/10 girls and 11/12 boys competitions. Other winners were Moss Vale HS in the 9/10 boys and Goulburn HS in the 11/12 girls.
