HONORS ESSAY (20 pts) Must have an intro with thesis, body with textual support and a conclusion 101.
Know then thyself, presume not God to scan; The proper study of mankind is man. Placed on this isthmus of a middle state, A being darkly wise and rudely great: With too much knowledge for the skeptic side, With too much weakness for the stoic's pride, He hangs between; in doubt to act or rest; In doubt to deem himself a god, or beast; In doubt his mind or body to prefer; Born but to die, and reasn'ing but to err; Alike in ignorance, his reason such, Whether he thinks too little or too much. Chaos of thought and passion, all confused; Still by himself abused, or disabused; Created half to rise, and half to fall; Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all; Sole judge of truth, in endless error hurled; The glory, jest, and riddle of the world! Pope's Essay on Man sums up the age’s view of man’s nature and place in world. It is an educated man’s view of his place in the world and the grand scheme of things based on the Great Chain of Being believing that everything God created is perfect. PROMPT: Pope argues that whatever is right, is right only because only God is omnipotent and man should not question Him. This means that man lives a paradoxical life, one stuggling between strife and harmony, for a purpose. Assuming that this is true, then in the end, is it better to believe that every man is a fool for failing to recognize e vil while stuggling for perfection or to believe that God is not wise for allowing evil to exist. (Use Pope's Epistle 2 and other readings from this era to prove your point.)
