Vocabulary Absolute cell reference A cell reference that does not change when copied because a dollar sign has been placed in front of both the column letter and row number, such as $A$5. Alphabetical order See Ascending order. Amortization A method for computing equal periodic payments for an installment loan. Amortization table Displays the interest and principal amounts for each payment of an installment loan. Arguments The data required by a function. Ascending order In order from lowest to highest. Also called alphabetical order when the data is text and chronological order when the data is times or dates. AVERAGE function Function that adds the values in a range of cells and then divides the result by the number of cells in the range. Chronological order See Ascending order. Descending order In order from highest to lowest. Function Performs a calculation that results in a single value. IF function Function that is used to make a decision based on a comparison. Installment loan Loan that is repaid in a series of periodic payments. Key sort column The column that contains the values that a sort is based on. Linked cells Data that is connected to the source cell and will automatically update if the source cell is changed. MAX function Function that displays the largest value in a range of cells. MIN function Function that displays the smallest value in a range of cells. PMT function Function that calculates the periodic payment for an installment loan. Spreadsheet model A worksheet containing data relating to a particular situation. Static Pasted data that is not connected to the source and will not automatically change if the source changes. SUM function Function that adds the values in a range of cells. Syntax The expected form or structure of a function. What-If analysis The process of making decisions using a spreadsheet model. What-If question A question that is answered using a worksheet model.
Excel Commands AutoSum Creates a formula with the SUM function. The AutoSum button arrow displays a list of other functions that can be used in formulas. Found on the FORMULAS tab.
Orientation Displays options for changing the print orientation. Found on the PAGE LAYOUT tab.
Cell Styles Displays the cell styles gallery. Found on the HOME tab.
Displayed when contents of the Paste Options Clipboard are placed in cells. Used to link cells between sheets.
Clear Print Area Clears a set print area. Found on the PAGE LAYOUT tab.
Portrait The default print orientation that allows more rows to be printed on a page.
Delete Removes a sheet from the workbook. Found in the menu displayed by right-clicking a sheet tab.
