ST. RAPHAEL CATHOLIC CHURCH ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND
JULY 23, 2017 Volunteer needed: The RFL Committee is seeking a person to serve as the co-chairperson for the next academic year. We are looking to focus on activities that strive to uphold the dignity of life in all of its stages. To learn more about the position, call Sandy Shamburek at 240-864-2514.
Social Responsibility and Outreach (SRO) Sandy Shamburek, 240-864-2514 Vincentian reflection: Today’s familiar Gospel reading is the parable of the sowing of the seed. In our daily round, we face good times and bad, successes and failures just as did the seed planted in various planting conditions. As human beings we are imperfect. We are aware of the times when we fall short of the Gospel values. Yet we also are a people of faith who know that the paschal mystery results in the resurrection and new life. Such insight leads us to repentance and permits us to trust in God’s mercy and loving kindness. St. Vincent de Paul knew this all too well as he served the poor as he stated: “We ought to have confidence in God that he will look after us since we know for certain that as long as we are grounded in that sort of love and trust we will be always under the protection of God in heaven, we will remain unaffected by evil and never lack what we need even when everything we possess seems headed for disaster.” (McKenna, Praying with Vincent, p.47) It is this trust in God’s providence that provides the St. Raphael Conference with the courage to continue to serve those in need.
Coalition Voices: As a new forum originating from Maryland Against Physician Assisted Suicide, Coalition Voices features current thoughts and personal stories from its members in the fight to defeat passage of legislation that legitimizes PAS in our state. To read up on the current efforts to stop the passage of PAS in Maryland, visit: http:// stopassistedsuicidemd.org/news/. If you are a healthcare professional and want to support this new coalition, visit: http://stopassistedsuicidemd.org/join-healthcare-coalition/ . Saving Lives ~ Supporting Families: The Shady Grove Pregnancy Center is in need of volunteers with a heart for women experiencing crisis pregnancies. Looking to train day-time volunteers who want to become pregnancy counselors. Training consists of 8 classes held Monday and Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. Dates: July 27, 31; August 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, and 21. For details call Jackie Stippich, Executive Director at 301-963-6223. Just one person can make all the difference in the life of a woman in crisis.
D. C. hungers: Did you know that Washington, DC has one of the highest food insecurity rates in the nation while being one of the top most expensive places in which to live? The working poor simply cannot make it without the help of groups like the John S. Mulholland Family Foundation, which sponsors three inner city food pantries. Our parish will support their 4th Annual “Summer in the City” Campaign next month. Please pick up a shopping bag after Mass next weekend and return it with the items printed on the bag during our regularly scheduled August food collection. Thank you for your generosity!

A call to eliminate nuclear weapons globally: A joint declaration between all U.S. and European Catholic bishops issued on July 6 emphasizes the Church’s position: “The indiscriminate and disproportionate nature of nuclear weapons, compel the world to move beyond nuclear deterrence. We call upon the United States and European nations to work with other nations to map out a credible, verifiable and enforceable strategy for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.” For the full text of the joint declaration go to www.usccb.org, or use google. Let us never stop praying for peace.

An Invitation to the Ministry of Catechesis SRRE catechists make time each week to reflect on God’s presence in Scripture and Catholic Tradition. While mentoring young Catholics these catechists discover God’s love sown in the wheat and weeds of life. Contact Mary Beaudoin to find out more about the faith-enriching ministry of catechesis. Special Needs Religious Education St. Raphael has an active Special Needs Ministry that strives to provide religious education to students of all abilities. Our Special Needs Religious Education program is unique in that we provide weekly sessions that offer children, teens, and young adults, no matter what challenges they may face, an opportunity to grow in their faith along with their peers. If you know of a family who does not attend Mass or does not bring their child with a disability to Mass due to fears about their behavior, etc., please have them contact us. We want them to come and we want to help! Also, we are seeking people with a background in special needs education to become part of our ministry. For more information about this joyful and enriching program, please contact Maria Harrington at
[email protected]. From Mass to Mission – We All Participate at Mass Over the past year our SRRE students in grades 2-7 came together once a month for a lesson on the Mass. We wanted to share with the whole parish what was covered in those lessons, in the hope that the entire St. Raphael Parish community might grow in understanding and love for the Eucharist.
Sacramental Activities Fee: $75.00 for children receiving First Eucharist in 2018 $125.00 for children ($150 for high schoolers) receiving Confirmation in 2018 (includes Confirmation Retreat)
When we gather for Mass, we are not an audience, watching the priest and ministers “do” the Mass. It is what we all do together. Each person has a special part in that holy work. You are part of the Mass when you sing, listen, say the responses, and pray. When everyone in church puts their voices together, it makes one big sound of God’s people praying. Just like your sports team or group needs you to be at its best, your Church community needs your voice at mass.1
The easiest way to pay is through Faith Direct. (See Quick Links on the Home page. Use the On-Line Giving - One Time Gift link to pay Religious Education tuition and Religious Education sacramental fee.) You can also write a check (payable to St. Raphael RE) and bring or send it to our office. Please put your child’s name on the memo line of your Faith Direct payment or your check. If you need tuition assistance or a payment plan, please contact us. We will be happy to work something out with you. Preparation for Sacraments The SRRE office oversees and coordinates sacrament preparation for all children ages 7-18. This includes Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, and Eucharist. Please contact Mary Beaudoin for information.
