[refrain] The lyrics of this Christmas Carol, We Three Kings, sum up the journey, the hope, the witness of the three kings who traveled from the East to find the Newborn King of the Jews! Astrologers, Wise Men, Kings as they are known to us, give rise to an unimagined purpose that came from God and led them to God! I wonder how this inkling, this urging, this fascination turned them around to lead them to Nazareth AND what then? How was their life changed when then returned home? Was it the same? Could it ever be the same? What now? And maybe that’s the reason for our celebrating the Epiphany of the Lord. It’s about what now in our lives once we have seen and bowed down and adored the Child Jesus? How could it ever be the same in us? Aren’t we different because we have seen and touched and felt Him in our hearts and in our lives? How could it ever be the same? We certainly don’t know the three kings story after they returned home. But we are the author of our story and have it within us to make a difference, to say the, “Yes” to being better, caring, patient, understanding, peaceful, and silent and on and on. Epiphany means “manifestation” so it would be up to us TO MANIFEST the best qualities of our hearts and spirits as we live this New Year of Grace. Have at it this Year! Once again, THANK YOU for manifesting Christ in word and deed.

If you or a friend or family member are homebound and unable to attend Mass, we would like to bring the Eucharist to you in your home. Music Ministry & Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy PROPHETICAL PRESENTS If you are reading this article at mass (and I won’t tell if it’s before, after, or during!) I am now married! I hope that everyone’s continued Christmas celebrations are wonderful. This week Devin and I will be in Jamaica, so there are(still) no rehearsals this week. We wish you could enjoy the sun and sand as well! The weekend of Epiphany is very special to me, not only because it is now close to my wedding anniversary, or because I have been holding the hymn fest on this weekend for the past two years. Because each of the Christmas weekends are specific feast days, they offer limited time for us to sing certain hymns. Many of the tunes attributed with Epiphany and the three kings are so hauntingly beautiful, and I am packing them in so we can enjoy them while we can. Your communion hymn, The First Nowell, is especially useful for this weekend because it retells the entire story of the Christmas miracle, from the shepherd’s meeting with the angel up to the arrival of the three kings with their gracious gifts. The gifts of the kings (or the wise men, depending on which gospel you are reading) are not only a kind offering, but they also symbolize Jesus’ role to come as he grows up to be fully recognized as our Savior. Frankincense, a gum resin that is burned as an aromatic incense, was used for deities, and honors Jesus’ divinity on earth. Gold is a gift for a king, accepting Christ as King of all on earth. Myrrh has a grim meaning; this embalming oil foretells of Jesus’ inevitable death for our salvation. I always wonder if Mary and Joseph understood the metaphors of these gifts for their infant son; if they would doubt God’s plan as we do so easily now. Keep faithful, for God has a plan for all!
