MAUNU SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 18 Thursday 22 November 2018 Dear Parents and Caregivers, Greetings to you all, Tena koe, Salutoj, Pagbati, Schöne Grüße; Assalaam Vaalekum “Just imagine how different the world could be if we all spoke to everyone with respect and kindness”. (Holly Branson) Raising Great Kids: The following is from Harvard University from evidenced-based research on 5 top tips for raising great kids. You will see that it revolves around developing empathy. Develop caring and loving Relationships: While it may seem like an obvious idea, children learn about caring and respect when they are shown it themselves. Empathize with Your Child and Model Empathy For Others: By being empathetic towards our children, and especially to others, we teach them what it means to understand another person’s feelings and be able to communicate to them. Be A Strong Ethical Role Model and Mentor: Children are like a sponge, they absorb and learn things based on their surroundings. They learn ethical values by observing us; our actions and the actions of other adults that they respect will mold their actions. Provide Opportunities For Children To Practice Empathy: Learning empathy is in certain respects like learning a language or a sport. It requires practice and guidance. Regularly considering other people’s perspectives and circumstances helps make empathy a natural reflex and, through trial and error, helps children get better at tuning into others’ feelings and perspectives. Help Children Develop Self-Control and Manage Feelings Effectively: It’s important that we help our children communicate their emotions and feelings, because these could be what is stopping them from showing empathy. Help your children by identifying these emotions and feelings, like frustration, sadness and anger, and encourage them to talk to you about why they’re feeling that way. Kapa Haka: Congratulations to the Junior and Senior kapa haka groups who performed at the Mangakahia Festival last week. Their volume was immense, their actions crisp and their haka impressive and

fearsome!!! Many thanks to Matua Shane and Whaea Claudine for getting them to this standard - it is a credit to all involved. The discipline needed to perform at a festival of this type is a great learning for all the group.
Learning through Play: A focus for the school in 2019 and 2020, is that of “learning through play”. Essentially, what this means, is looking at all the learning opportunities that are evident when people (children) are playing. Over the years there has been a noticeable trend across NZ in the lessening of oral skills and the inability for many children to resolve conflict with others. There are a number of factors for this, but one of the contributors is that the “play of old” has all but disappeared from some children’s lives. The link below is an interesting video about the decline of play, presented by Peter Gray. It is part of the TED Talks series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg-GEzM7iTk Teaching staff and Syndicate Organisation for 2019: The number of students at each age level dictates the structure of the syndicates and classes. The 2019 structure is similar to this year: Junior Syndicate: (Year 1 and 2) Room 3 - Yr 1 Jenny Canty (Team Leader) Room 4 - Yr 1 Alana Fromont Room 8 - Yr 1&2 Mary Mulligan Room 1 - Yr 2 Mel Aubrey-Bell Room 2 - Yr 2 Suzi Gray Middle Syndicate: (Year 3 and 4) Room 5&6 Nadine Nicholas (Team Leader) & Tina Nimmo Room 7 Rachel Barclay Room 9 Jennie Hawkes Room 10 Kendra Bradley Senior Syndicate: (Year 5 and 6) Room 11 James Love Room 12 Talei Wilson Room 13 Molly North Room 14 Cayne Wright Sen Synd Olivia Lansdowne (Term 1) Claire Turton (Team Leader) Claire’s role will be split between teaching and DP role. The Middle & Junior syndicates will work as a team with interaction among all classes,
however each room will be the home room for the children in that room. The amount of collaboration will be decided by the team. Room 5 & 6 will operate as a collaborative space, and will interact with the other middle syndicate classes. The senior syndicate will operate in a collaborative way with all 4 classes interacting together - this is how they have operated this year. We welcome Suzy, Cayne and Mary to the staff of Maunu School. I am sure you will make them welcome and take the time to get to know them in 2019. Other staff will be confirmed later in the year.

SCHOOL POOL KEYS The school pool will be open for swimming for key holders from Monday 10 December. We have had to revise our Pool User Rules, in accordance with the Health and Safety Act. If you purchase a key, then you agree to abide by the rules and accept responsibility for actions and use. Keys will be $90 each - numbers are limited and will be available for purchase from the school office on Monday 3 December. Keys are sold to school families first and then to the wider Maunu community. There is a limited number of keys available for sale - based on the restrictions we have for numbers going through the pool in a 24-hour period. FAMILY FINANCIAL STATEMENTS COMING HOME MONDAY The Parent Donations received are an important component of our budgeted income. These funds are used to cover the various costs of our school not funded by the Government. Please note that this donation can be included with your donations on your tax return. Your support is very much appreciated. Many thanks to those that have made payments throughout the year. There are still existing payments for Prime Math book, Miniball, Senior Camp and Middle Adventure Week yet to be paid. These fees are compulsory and need to be paid before school finishes. Thank you.
