A MESSAGE FROM THE SHELTER DIRECTOR
Board of Directors
Pet safety during hot summer days is a big concern for all of us. Making sure that dogs and cats are kept cool during the heat is very important for your pets’ well-being. Here at the shelter we have pools in the dog runs and the cats have their choice of being indoors in an air conditioned cat room or a shaded outdoor area.

In the summer months, when it can reach 100 or more degrees, you can imagine how hot it can get in your car. In 100 degree heat, the inside of your car can reach 130 degrees within minutes. The bed of a pickup truck can easily reach high enough temperatures to burn your dogs’ paws. People often forget that walking their dogs on hot asphalt roads can be extremely dangerous. Asphalt can reach up to 143 degrees on a hot day. During the peak summer months, the hours between 10 & 5 are the hottest hours of the day and will require the most caution. You can easily determine if asphalt is too hot by placing your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds, if it is too hot to keep your hand in place, it is too hot for your dog to walk on. Be sure that your pets’ water bowls are in the shade and do not use metal bowls. Provide a small pool or a water mister for your dogs to keep them cool. We often hear of people who have left their animals in the car during these hot summer months while running an errand and 20 minutes later they come out to a dog that has died or a broken car window from a concerned citizen. Leaving an animal in a hot car is a citable offense and you could be arrested. Please do your animals a favor and leave them at home to keep them safe. If you see an animal in distress, call your local animal shelter or police department.
WE’RE VENTURA COUNTY’S LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY Every so often we receive a call from one of our supporters asking why they haven’t received a donation receipt or telling us that we don’t need to send them gifts for their donations.

Oliver’s Report Just a reminder to all you good folks out there that the Cats at the shelter got their new digs so now it’s time for the dogs to get theirs. We need to help those featherless critters and give their home away from home a makeover. To my buddy and favorite visitor, Richard Abbott, who has pledged funds to kick off a fundraising campaign to fix up our kennel, beaks to you my good friend!
These calls remind us that people still confuse us with other Humane Societies. We DO send donation receipts for each donation. We DON’T send gifts, ALL of your donation is used to help animals. We have no affiliation, nor do we receive funding from the Humane Society of the United States or any other animal agency. If you would like your donations to help animals here in Ventura County, make sure that your donations are being sent directly to the
I was singing the other day to a young girl and her eyes got real big and she said “how did he know that it was my birthday?” Well, Oliver knows everything! So, when it’s your kid’s birthday, bring them to see me. You will be surprised at my talents. Peanut butter crackers always help.
Humane Society of Ventura County.
Until next time, Happy Bird Day and crackers to me!
The other day I shouted out a warning to the staff that there was big trouble outside and I screamed really loudly trying to make my point. I thought I would fall off my perch. My friend looked outside and boy was I right, it was trouble. A large harmless gopher snake wanted to visit the visitor center and I wanted to let him know that we were not taking visitors of his kind that day. So the boss lady went out and told him he had to leave. He went on his way to visit one of the many gopher friends instead. We all need to be careful because rattlesnakes are out now too, so be sure to keep your furry friends safe.
Daisy goes home! After I had my puppies, I went back to be cared for at the shelter. All of my puppies were adopted but I needed a canine friend to play with so it took a while to find the perfect home for me.
My name was Maggie but I’m now known as Daisy. I came to the Humane Society of Ventura County when I was full term pregnant, ready to find a nice warm place to give birth. I was signed over as “a stray.” At first I was confused and scared, wondering where my people were and where I would have my puppies. All of the HSVC staff & volunteers showed me so much love and care. I was sent to a foster home where I could be comfortable and safely deliver my pups. I ended up having five little boys and a sweet little girl.
Finally my time was going to come. A very nice lady by the name of Yvonne saw my photo on the HSVC website and immediately called the shelter to see if I was still available. Yvonne had adopted one of my puppies who she named Charlie. She was interested in finding a friend for Charlie to play with and thought I might be the perfect choice! Yvonne brought Charlie in to see me and we were both very happy to see each other! We shared kisses, and ran around and played together for a while. Like us, Yvonne was full of joy to see us so happy together. She was so excited that she decided to take me home that day! I now have a beautiful, loving home where both my new mom and my son love me. Thank you to everyone who has helped me to blossom into a happy, loving girl! With love and appreciation, Daisy
SUMMER CAMP Summer camp at the shelter has been a fun and enriching learning experience. The campers worked hard with some shy shelter animals to help socialize them, making them more adoptable pets. Campers helped profile the behavior of some of the dogs as they worked with them and created posters highlighting some of the needs of pets. They taught the dogs basic commands and how to walk better on the leash. Campers spent time with the cats and kittens too. They also enjoyed visits from some other animals as part of the education program. Craft projects included making cat and dog toys for shelter animals. To receive information about the camps please contact our Humane Educator, Dawn Reily, by emailing her at

82nd BIRTHDAY BASH June 9th, 1932 was the beginning of what has turned out to be an incredible organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals in Ventura County. On June 7th, 2014, the Humane Society of Ventura County celebrated 82 years of promoting the health, safety, welfare and compassionate care and protection of all animals through education and community outreach. More than 300 people visited the Shelter for the Birthday Bash. They enjoyed offerings from Scratch Food truck, birthday cake, frozen yogurt from Bliss, entertainment by the Main Street Jazz Band and KHAY radio. Guests perused booths demonstrating everything from Pet First Aid and CPR to animal themed jewelry. There was even a pet psychic on hand. Lucy in the Sky and HSVC Humane educator Dawn Reily kept the kids busy with face painting, games and crafts. Tours of the kennels and our recently renovated spay/neuter clinic were offered and visitors had a chance to meet our animals currently looking for new homes. Happily, a few of our furry friends found their forever homes during the festivities! Special thanks to all who came to share information about animal rescue organizations and animal care, to feed the masses, to provide entertainment, to volunteer, and to attend the event. This special event was made possible by many individuals who support The Humane Society of Ventura County. Without their support and dedication, events such as this would not be possible.

BE A HERO - GIVE SOMEONE A HOME GERMAN SHEPHERD RESCUE FOSTERS OSO We would like to say a special thank you to Westside German Shepherd Rescue for their generous offer to help find a home for Oso, a sweet German Shepherd who spent a few months here with us. Oso’s first home was on a ranch where he was free to roam. The owners were unable to keep him due to the

large numbers of animals they had. Life at the Shelter was an adjustment for Oso who was an active fellow. Our staff and volunteers gave him lots of play time. Oso loved playing in his swimming pool in the large dog run. He spent most of his day playing ball and dunking his head under the water. After being at the Shelter for a while it was apparent that he was in need of a change. Kennel life was just not for him. Westside German Shepherd Rescue
specializes in re-homing this wonderful breed and we are confident that they will find Oso the perfect family.
Oso was happy to meet his new friends from Westside German Shepherd Rescue.
VOLUNTEER JANE PETERSON IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Our volunteers play a crucial role in the adoption process here at the Humane Society Shelter and Adoption Center. You may be familiar with volunteers socializing animals, assisting in the kennels, running our booths at events, but what you may not have heard of is our Volunteer Yard Checker Program. We rely on our volunteers to conduct yard checks at the homes of potential dog adopters. These volunteers inspect, notate and take photos of yards for our Humane Officers to help them to evaluate the suitability of potential homes for our dogs. This helps our dogs get through the adoption process much faster. The majority of our yard checks are performed by volunteer extraordinaire Jane Peterson. Jane starting volunteering with the Humane Society back in 2005 when she was completing the small animal training at the Ojai School of Massage. She left the area in 2006 and in 2011 she returned to Ventura and once again began volunteering with us. Jane describes her desire to return, “I knew I wanted to make volunteering at the shelter a priority in my life.” Besides yard checks Jane is also always here for the kennel staff in emergency situations. She works with our dogs on basic obedience training and utilizes her skills with touch and massage work with them. Jane recently became certified as a Veterinary Assistant, and would like to help out more with simple medical procedures, vaccinations, and minor first aid.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st
Jane Peterson with her good friend Gracie
Though she wears many hats here at HSVC she states “yard checks are my favorite thing at HSVC. Yard checks make me very happy!” Jane lives in Ventura and has two dogs and two birds of her own. She says the most challenging thing about volunteering at HSVC is the drive back and forth from Ventura, but that she’s glad to do it for the dogs. We are so grateful for community members such as Jane who do so much to assist in helping homeless animals in our area. HSVC is currently in need of volunteer yard checkers throughout Ventura County. In order to increase our adoption rates we need additional help in the following areas: Camarillo, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Pt. Hueneme, and Thousand Oaks. We generally have about one or two yard checks per month in these areas and are working to increase our adoption numbers in these cities. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer yard checker, or in volunteering for other tasks at our Shelter and Adopton Center, please call our Volunteer Coordinator, Franki Williams, at 805-646-6650 for more information.
Mark your calendar for this year’s annual fundraising event. It’s a great time to get together with HSVC friends and share an amazing Boccali’s dinner while supporting the work of the Humane Society. Find a treasure at our “Buy It Now” auction where we’ll have everything from pet related goodies to services we all need, all generously donated by local Ventura County merchants who kindly support the HSVC with their donations. Many of these items would make great holiday gifts. Once again, we are on the lookout for help with the event. We need volunteers, and event sponsors. If you are interested in helping out, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Franki, at
[email protected]. If you would like to be an event sponsor this year, please call Heather Rowe for donation information. Advanced sale tickets are available now, $45 for adults and $30 for kids. A limited number of tickets will be on sale at the door for $50. Call today to reserve your tickets. 805 646-6505. See front page for address and time. Free parking in dirt lot next to event.
