JOB DESCRIPTION SENIOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF MATHS (NP)

CORE PURPOSE 1.1
Provide professional leadership and management of the department at Newport Pagnell to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all students.
1.2
Support, guide and motivate teachers of the subject and other adults e.g. classroom assistants, administrative and technical staff in promoting a positive staff culture, good practice and continuing professional development.
1.3
Monitor, evaluate and be accountable for the standards of teaching and learning, ensuring that all students make progress towards and most students achieve their targets or above in KS4.
1.4
Be accountable for the efficient and effective day-to-day running of the department at NP with the Director including student behaviour and the effective deployment of staff and resources with particular reference to Key Stage 4.
1.5
Carry out a systematic approach to self-evaluation in line with school policy.
1.6
Work with the Director of Maths and Assistant Director of Maths (Olney) to develop the department, in line with the overall needs of the school, with an understanding of how your subject area contributes to school priorities and to the overall education and achievement of all students.
STRATEGIC DIRECTION 2.1
Assist in development of policy and practice to support the continued improvement of effective teaching and learning in the Maths department and across the school.
2.2
Support the Director of Maths in ensuring the Maths department promotes, and lives, the vision for the school and the school motto: Aspire, Believe, Achieve.
2.3
Contribute to students’ spiritual, moral and cultural development e.g. citizenship, trips and visiting speakers from the world of Maths.
2.4
Analyse and interpret relevant data, research and other documentation to inform future practice, expectations and teaching methods.

Monitor progress made in implementing subject plans and achieving targets, evaluate the effect on teaching and learning, and use this analysis to guide further improvement.
2.6
Contribute to the work of the school’s Middle Leader Group where appropriate and make a significant contribution to the Leadership and Management group in Maths.
2.7
Regularly contribute to the Learning Zone and the school website ensuring that KS4 resources are relevant and up-to-date.
TEACHING AND LEARNING 3.1
Ensure the Learning and Teaching policy is implemented and monitored at KS4 and across Newport Pagnell. Liaise with the Director of Maths to ensure that scheme of work meet the latest specifications and that Controlled Assessments are implemented as per examination guidelines. Ensure these are the correct year and series for each cohort.
3.2
Ensure there is full curriculum coverage with continuity and progression through the regular review and development of schemes of work.
3.3
Lead items and Inset at department meetings to provide guidance and support on the choice of appropriate teaching and learning methods to meet the needs of the subject.
3.4
Establish clear policies and practices for assessing, recording and reporting on student achievement. Ensure methods are standardised across the department, achievement and underperformance identified and targets for further improvement set and implemented.
3.5
Set clear expectations for staff and students in relation to student behaviour. Ensure PALs and/or parents are kept well informed.
LEADING AND MANAGING STAFF 4.1
Support the team in achieving constructive working relationships with students.
4.2
Carry out performance management reviews and classroom observations in line with school policy. Support the further professional development of all staff, including newly qualified teachers and initial teacher training students.
4.3
Work with the SENCO and other staff with special educational needs expertise, to ensure the individual education plans are used to set subject specific targets and match work to students’ needs.
4.4
Contribute to the selection, and promotion of staff, assessments for the Threshold and Upper Pay Spine, and writing references.
4.5
Be a role model for other staff in terms of your own teaching, ensuring you teach good / outstanding lessons consistently.

EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE DEPLOYMENT OF STAFF AND RESOURCES 5.1
Work with the Director of Maths to identify staff and resource needs at the Newport Pagnell Campus.
5.2
Set up clear and effective day-to-day systems to ensure the department operates efficiently including making appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent and organise cover work as necessary.
5.3
Manage the organisation and maintenance of teaching resources including ICT for Newport Pagnell.
5.4
Create an effective and stimulating environment for teaching and learning.
5.5
Attend national training events to keep up-to-date with new developments.
ETHOS AND CULTURE 6.2
Promote an ethos and culture within the department that are in line with achieving the aims of the school.
