my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' ~ Matthew 25:34-36

is necessary that the Office of Vocations continue to attract young men to the priesthood. The cost of formation for these young men is significant. I have had the opportunity to walk alongside my son Christian for nearly seven years as he has been discerning the priesthood. In this walk, I have learned that the educational path a young man undertakes, leading to ordination, includes two separate and distinct areas of formation. Young men of our diocese who begin discernment and formation immediately following high school graduation attend St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. This four-year educational experience at SJV culminates in a BA degree in philosophy. The seminarian’s family and the diocese jointly fund the seminarian’s undergraduate education; the cost to the diocese is approximately $30,000 per year. The next step in priestly formation takes the seminarian to major seminary. Our diocese utilizes three seminaries including St. Meinrad in southern Indiana, Mundelein Seminary at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois, and Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Fruitful Harvest Campaign Update Happy Thanksgiving from the Fruitful Harvest Leadership team! During this period of reflection of all those things we are thankful for, it is not too late to consider making a contribution to the Fruitful Harvest Campaign. This would be a clear, demonstrative act of thanks for all those activities Fruitful Harvest supports, both at the diocesan level and at St. Alphonsus. Fruitful Harvest 2016 is doing well. To date, we have received $402,981 towards our dovetail goal of $838,086. But we need all of you to contribute. We would love to increase our overall family participation goal. If you have not yet made a gift to Fruitful Harvest, we invite you to do so today. To those who have contributed, we are most grateful.
Fruitful Harvest Contributions Support Priestly Vocations As Catholic Christians we depend on our parish priests to provide ongoing counsel and formation. They support our parish community in worship and spirituality, education and formation, and pastoral care. The Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana has 62 parishes with approximately 100,000 parishioners, and the need for priests in our diocese is ongoing. As many of our priests near retirement age, it
The priestly formation program common to all major seminaries includes human formation, spiritual formation, intellectual formation, and pastoral formation. Human formation ensures that the seminarians are balanced and mature men capable of effectively relating to others and bearing the weight of pastoral responsibilities. Spiritual formation ensures that the seminarians live in intimate communion with God. Intellectual formation ensures that the seminarians fully grasp the Catholic intellectual traditions and are capable of proclaiming and teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastoral formation ensures that the seminarians learn to be shepherds imbued with the charity of Jesus Christ and are able to fulfill the various ministries associated with their priestly vocation. This four-year educational experience at major seminary culminates in a MA degree in Theology and ordination to the priesthood. The cost associated with major seminary is approximately $30,000 per year and is funded exclusively by the Diocese. The total funding for eight years of seminarian education, culminating in ordination to the priesthood is approximately $250,000. As you prayerfully consider making a contribution to the 2016 Fruitful Harvest Campaign, please recognize that part of your financial gift will go towards supporting formation of future priests for our diocese. Thank you for supporting the future generation of priests. ~ Mark DeCarlo

Mass and Liturgy Reflection for the Feast of Christ the King In effect, the reign of Christ is not of this world, but brings to completion all the good that, thanks be to God, exists in man and in history. If we put into practice our love for our neighbor, according to the Gospel message, we then pave the way for the lordship of God, and his kingdom is realized by means of us. ~ Pope Benedict XVI, Meditation on Christ the King
Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory November is when we are called, in a special way, to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest. You are invited to write the names of deceased loved ones in our parish’s Book of Remembrance, which is in the narthex throughout November. The names of parishioners who have died and of others whose funerals were at St. Alphonsus Liguori since last November are posted on the bulletin board in the east entrance to the narthex. Please take time to pray for the souls of those in the book, those on the bulletin board, and for all the faithful departed, especially during this month. Some suggested prayers are available near the bulletin board.
Incense Please note that incense may be used at Masses where the Knights of the Holy Temple serve. Next weekend, they are scheduled to serve at 8 a.m. Mass on Sunday, November 27.
Advent Penance Service Thursday, December 1 at 7 p.m.
Although Thanksgiving is not a liturgical event, Mass is an excellent way to begin this day of giving thanks to God, so please consider attending the 9 a.m. Mass that will be held in the nave on Thursday, November 24. You are invited to bring your bread, wine, and other unprepared food and place it before the altar so that it may be blessed during Mass.

Ask an Adorer Q: May I read while adoring? A: Yes. Possible spiritual reading may include Sacred Scripture, the Liturgy of the Hours, publications such as the Magnificat, writings of the saints, the Catechism, Church documents, and Catholic topical books, especially those which carry the nihil obstat and the imprimatur (declarations that the contents have been found free of doctrinal or moral error). Many adorers jot a few notes or journal while in Adoration. The general rule is to keep things simple to limit distraction from the true purpose of Adoration, to spend time in the presence of God.
Open Position The Pastoral Associate for Worship is a full-time staff position at our parish that shares responsibility for the daily pastoral care of the faithful. This person will work collaboratively with the pastor, associate pastor, and others to form a pastoral team for the liturgical life of the parish. The Pastoral Associate for Worship will focus, creatively and cooperatively, towards the formation of a lively, faith-filled, worshipping community. The position requires someone with excellent managerial skills and knowledge of parochial life. A baccalaureate degree is required; a master’s degree in a related area is a valuable asset. Please send resumes to Mrs. Denni Badger, Administration Coordinator:

Outreach The Giving Tree: providing parents with Christmas gifts for their teenagers In the Christmas spirit, we come together with the Boone County Caring Center to make a difference in the lives of those with fewer resources by providing Christmas gifts to teenage youth who are too often overlooked. Please select a gift tag(s) from the tree in the narthex and purchase a gift for the designee. Shop with your family (children love to help pick out things) and return the
gift(s), UNWRAPPED, with the tags attached, and place into the appropriate box in the narthex. We ask that ALL GIFTS be brought to church by Sunday, November 27. Your Gifts make a huge difference in the lives of these families with teenagers. Thank you for your generosity. We also need donations of gift wrap, ribbon, bows, and Scotch tape. If you need help or to help out, contact John Schuler: 317.373.4645 or
