The Epiphany of the Lord
Sunday Reflection Dear Corpus Christi Parish, On behalf of all of us at St. Christine Christian Services, I thank you for your recent “Share The Sweetness” donations. Because of your generosity and the generosity of others, SCCS provided over 20,000 meals and 6,000 bags of groceries to the poor this year. This Christmas, again with the help of many parishes and others, SCCS provided gifts to over 700 families of limited means.
God Is Unassuming "Behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying 'Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.'" How strange to journey so far for perhaps so little. Of course the magi go to the capitol city. Of course they entreat with King Herod. Of course this is where they expect newborn royalty to be. But where is the child? "In Bethlehem of Judea," the scribes say. And so the magi go on to what is yet another Christmas miracle.
Again, thank you very much and may God bless you! — Maureen Northrop, Administrator St. Christine Christian Services
Inside This Issue ... <
We don't know where the magi met the Christ Child, but it cannot have been lavish. Perhaps it was the stable. Perhaps it was a small hovel Joseph had found to wait out the census. But it would have been the home of a laborer, worn and threadbare. Here, in this unassuming abode, the magi are still "overjoyed...they prostrated themselves and did him homage." Have you ever gotten to the end

Sunday Reflection (continued from page 1)
by Mary Davis
of a great work and found the results to be underwhelming? How did you respond? Were you disappointed or elated at God's providence and your upended expectations? The magi journeyed hundreds of miles over treacherous terrain to pay homage to royalty they have seen prophesied in the stars. They encountered an ordinary family displaced from their home. This Sunday, the magi are an example for us. Can we see God in the unexpected? Do we encounter Him in the person who doesn't fit our expectations of propriety? Do we revere Christ's presence in the poor? Or do we expect to meet God only in places of honor and esteem? This week, ask God for the grace to honor Him in the unexpected places and unassuming people. He is waiting for you!
There are a bazillion different kinds of waiting: waiting in line, for your car to be repaired, for your Uber to come, for that teenager out past curfew to get home, for a loved one to come successfully out of surgery, for that package to arrive and the list goes on. Advent was a different kind of waiting, a waiting which ended with the birth of a baby who changed everything. Please sit, take a breath and take a moment to reflect on this short meditation by Henri Nouwen, (1-24-32—9-21-96), a Priest, writer, educator and philosopher: How do we wait for God? We wait with patience. But patience does not mean passivity. Waiting patiently is not like waiting for the bus to come, the rain to stop, or the sun to rise. It is an active waiting in which we live the present moment to the full in order to find there the signs of the One we are waiting for.
© 2018 Liturgical Publications Inc
The word patience comes from the Latin verb “patior” which means “to suffer.” Waiting patiently is suffering through the present moment, tasting it to the full, and letting the seeds that are sown in the ground on which we stand grow into strong plants. Waiting patiently always means paying attention to what is happening right before our eyes and seeing there the first rays of God’s glorious coming. Our waiting for the birth of the Christ Child has come to an end. As we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord this weekend, let me take a moment to again thank my Corpus Christi family for all of the good prayers this summer as I got two new knees. A big thank you to all of the Hospitality Committee volunteers who made the Volunteer Party, Holy Thursday Meal, Feast Day Celebration, Picnic, and Christmas Party happen. A big thank you to all of the Social Justice Committee volunteers who made the Lenten Soup Meal, the Haiti Dinner, the two service days at St. Christine Soup Kitchen, and the 1st Sunday of Advent Giving happen. Wishing blessings in abundance to all!!! — Mary Davis

3 Keep The Christmas Spirit Going Strong For Catholics, Christmas doesn’t end with the turn of the calendar year. Here are eight ways to keep the spirit of Christmas alive through the year: 1.
Sing more together as a family.
2.
The holidays serve as a reminder of how some people are less fortunate than we are. Donate to a food shelf or volunteer at a soup kitchen the other 10 months of the year.
3.
Copy your family’s best or most favorite recipes. Give them as “stocking stuffers” on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
4.
Use two hours of your summer vacation to make homemade Christmas ornaments as a family craft.
5.
Treat every Sunday like you do Christmas Mass. Dress up. Go as a family. Sing. Celebrate. Remember.
6.
Send one additional card or letter to family and friends who otherwise only hear from you at Christmas. It doesn’t have to be long. But don’t email. Don’t Facebook. Write it. With a pen.
7.
If your kids are bombarded with presents, pull a couple back and stow them in the closet for a rainy day in April or May.
8.
Leave the Nativity scene up; we could all use a
3 Everyday Stewardship "The Story of the Other Wise Man" by Henry Van Dyke was first published in 1895. It tells the fictional story of Artaban, a fourth wise man who began a journey to visit Jesus, the newborn King. Unlike his fellow Magi, he failed to make it there for the birth of Jesus because he kept pausing to help various people in need. In fact, it took him about 33 years of searching before his quest comes to an abrupt end when he is hit in the head with a falling roof shingle. His final breath takes place in Jerusalem near the place where Jesus is being crucified. As he lies dying, he hears the voice of Jesus telling him that the gifts he has given all along the way to "the least of these" he has actually given to Jesus himself. (continued on page 7)

Everyday Stewardship (continued from page 4) If you have never read this story or seen the made-for-television movie based on the tale, you really should seek it out. It is a story that reminds us of a profound truth: Jesus himself rests in the lives of all those around us in need. In the story, it was the wise man's constant response to a stewardship call that prevented him from getting where he wanted to go. In the end, where he needed to go was more significant than where he thought he should go. If we live lives of generosity and graciousness, we may find ourselves on constant detours from the road on which we are traveling. It is in the detours and the unexpected circumstances of our journey that often times we find our true purpose in life. We think God is somewhere we must travel to, when in reality, God is closer than we think in the least likely of places. — written by Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc

Questions of the Week First Reading The prophet Isaiah spoke these words about 500 years before the birth of Christ. In what ways do you see Isaiah's prophecy fulfilled today? Second Reading St. Paul informs the Ephesians that "the mystery made known" to him "by revelation" was that the Gentiles are "coheirs" with the Jews "in the promise in Christ Jesus." This message was very reluctantly received. Why do you think some people struggle with the idea that God desires to save all people through His Son? Gospel Reading Matthew tells us the visit of the magi "greatly troubled" King Herod and all of Jerusalem. Why do you think the good news of Jesus Christ remains a threat to some people even today?

Dear Corpus Christi, Have a Blessed Christmas Season
Messages on the Rocks Have you noticed the rocks around the tree at the parking lot entrance to church? Each rock was painted by a middle school student during their Generations of Faith learning session last November. Mrs. Lori Fedeson is the catechist. The rocks are there to welcome everyone who comes to our parish with special messages. Some rocks have reminders of Catholic values: Kindness, Compassion, Friendship, Unity. Others are expressions of faith: Saved!, The Lord is my Faith. Some include messages of hope: Give Thanks; Peace be with You, U R Beautiful. Check out the rocks as you enter or leave Church. Which message is meant just for you today? Our next Generations of Faith Session will be Sunday, January 27th after the 11 am Mass. The topic is Striving to be Mournful and Merciful, and our adult catechist will be Sr. Janet Schaeffler, OP. Registration begins this weekend.
The people of Haiti remain an inspiration to us. We pray for them, especially for those in the Mirebalais area, now led by Fr. Alphonse, pastor of St. Pierre and Fr. Romel, paster of St. Louis. May we all experience Faith, Peace, Love, and Justice as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. In our church, on the feast of Epiphany, we write initials over the doorway. What does this stand for or mean? In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center are the initials of the traditional names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The purpose is to ask God's blessing on the home, marking it as though the Wise Men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It reminds us of the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God's blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace. In many Hispanic cultures, it is Epiphany, or Los Reyes Magos (Day of the Three Kings), when gifts celebrating the birth of Christ usually appear. On the night of January 5, hay and a bucket of water are left outside the house for the camels who carry the Magi. A box or old shoes are put under the bed in which the W ise Men will leave gifts for the children. On the evening of January 6 families gather for dinner, and enjoy the rosca de reyes, a ring-shaped sweet bread decorated with candied fruit. Baked inside is a small figure of baby Jesus. Whoever finds the figure in his or her piece will host the final feast of the Christmas season, el día de la Candelaria on February 2. On that day new clothes are presented to enrobe the figure of baby Jesus in the Nativity scene of the family or the church. In any event, the manifestation of Christ as the Light of the World is a time to seek God's blessing and rejoice in the gift of Jesus to us and to all the world.
