IX International Congress on Cactus Pear and Cochineal and IX General Meeting of CACTUSNET September 26-‐29, 2016 Mendoza, Argentina
First Announcement The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), FAO-ICARDA CACTUSNET and Argentine Institute for Arid Land Research (IADIZA-CONICET), jointly with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (National University of Cuyo) and Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (National University of San Juan) invite researchers, growers and processing managers to attend the IX International Congress on Cactus Pear and Cochineal. The Congress will be held in Mendoza, Argentina from September 26 to 29, 2016. The City of Mendoza is the most important in the region of Cuyo and one of the most beautiful and neat cities in the country. It is famous for lodging Mount Aconcagua, for its Malbec wines and for being the cradle of the heroic deeds of Liberator General San Martín, Father of this nation. Capital of the province bearing the same name, Mendoza, and nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountain Range, it gives shape to an incredible man-made oasis with the help of the Mendoza and Tunuyán Rivers, which have been wisely channeled into a huge irrigation system that gives life to everything it touches. During the four days of the congress, speakers from Europe, America, Asia and Africa will review current research trends, present new discoveries and make plans for future research and special projects in all areas of the cactus pear and cochineal industry.
Discussion Topics The main topics to be discussed are: 1. Biology, ecophysiology and carbon sequestration 2. Genetics resources 3. Animal feeding, forage and rangeland improvement 4. Fruit and nopalitos production, pitayas and pitahayas 5. Post-harvest and agroindustry 6. Medicinal, cosmetic and biofuel uses 7. Cochineal breeding and utilization 8. Pest and diseases 9. Economy and marketing The Congress will have a scientific program consisting of plenary lectures, oral communications and posters.
Important dates
Abstract submission: Abstracts should be received by the end of April 2016.
Abstract acceptance decision: The Scientific Committee will examine them and take a decision concerning acceptance and type of contribution (oral or poster) by the end of May 2016. A submission form will be available online shortly.
