SOM ETHI NG TO THI NK A BOUT Let's encourage our young people to put more time and effort into what they are doing in school, because what they are doing is for themselves. Their choices will affect them and the direction their direction in life.
Summer school is is quickly approaching! With that in mind, let's encourage our students to put forth more effort into their studies than than they did during the regular school year. If they can go out with a higher grade during the summer session, that will be very good! Our young people have to take time to make a greater effort in summer school for themselves. Although things may happen around them, and things may happen to them, the only things that really count are the things that happen within them. With this outlook on life, our teens will be able to claim their greatness. Even though our youth may see a lot of issues within their community broadcast on the news, they should not allow that to take away the vision they have for themselves.
Let's also motivate our youth to always remember their choices do have consequences. Most importantly, those consequences will impact them first and foremost. Our teenagers also need to be reminded to put some thought into what they would like to do this summer, outside of school and other responsibilities. In short, let's inspire our youth to put forth more time into their education and their upcoming summer break. Our assistance in guiding our teens through their planning will help set them on their path to achieving their goals and dreams! Just something to think about.

I NV ESTI NG I N YOURSELF BEYOND FORM A L EDUCA TI ON An essential key to success is personal and professional development. Today, more parents are taking advantage of the unconventional approach outside of formal education to give themselves a leading edge in their parenting skills. There are several different ways to this approach. The most commonly used methods that are effective and non-pressuring are attending conferences, seminars & workshops, reading or listening to self-help books, and coaching & mentoring. Conf erences, seminars, & workshops are an ideal way to gain knowledge and to grow in parenting your teens. Because of like-minded individuals in one place and group dynamics, these events can bring about life-changing and transformational experiences! This is a great way for those who are not interested in learning over a long period of time, but want fresh ideas and hands-on experiences that they can implement immediately. To get the most out of these conferences, you must have clear goals as to what you want to achieve and how it will benefit you as a parent. If you are a self-motivator, reading and/ or l ist ening t o sel f -hel p books are practical and cost-effective ways of acquiring new parenting skills or developing existing ones. This is an excellent way to learn. It gives you the freedom and flexibility to work at your own pace. This type of learning, sometimes piques your interest for further growth and development by enrolling n a course or hiring a coach or mentor. Lastly, coaching and ment oring is my all-time favorite way of learning and developing! You get exactly what you need as an individual parent. A coach helps you resolve concrete issues in your parenting role such as bonding with your teen, time management, or communicating more clearly with your teen. The purpose of a parenting coach or mentor is to help improve your performance as a parent. A mentor is relationship driven. He/ She helps you with personal growth and parenting success. The focus can include things such as work/ life balance, self-confidence, self-perception, and how your personal life influences your professional life. Both coaching and mentoring can be paid or unpaid, short term or long term, private or small group. If you want results quickly, you should consider hiring one. The length of the relationship is determined by both parties. If paid, most likely there will be a contractual agreement that specifies the terms and conditions, which I strongly recommend. Whether your role as parent includes being a student, a professional, or a homemaker, developing yourself is essential to you and your teen's success. Investing your time and/ or money into acquiring new parenting skills or developing existing ones can only be of utmost value to your overall growth as a parent and individual! Attending conferences, seminars and workshops, reading or listening to self-help books, or getting a coach or mentor are all proven ways to life-changing experiences and transformation for you as an individual, parent, and professional! It?s always an exciting time for families when they?re expecting a new addition. Although, even with all the excitement, it can still be challenging for an older sibling to adapt to the idea of no longer being the ?baby? of the family. If you?re trying to have a baby, and already have an older child, do not let this discourage you. And for those of you who are already expecting, and currently have an older child, there is hope as well. So many families have found themselves in this situation, with little to no help on

Dif f erent iat ion & Your Teen's Cl assroom One might ask what differentiation in your child?s classroom looks like. First of all, let?s talk about what differentiation is. Differentiation does not merely mean different assignments for different students. It is instruction that allows each student to learn at a pace with adequate depth and complexity of learning. This means providing for the needs of all students. It includes--but is not limited to--students with special education needs, gifted and talented students, struggling students, high-achieving students, as well as English language (EL) learners. In the spirit of differentiated instruction, classrooms should be structured to provide for taking in information in a variety of ways, different ways to complete work, and different ways for student to show what they know. This could mean that students have different amounts of time to complete work. An important differentiation relates to different means of assessing what students have learned. Flexible and creative teaching models can help teachers designing effective learning for students. This means that each student's growth and individual success can be maximized by meeting each student where he or she is, as compared to expecting students to change how they learn to meet the curriculum. Some strategies for effective differentiation include the use of: -recorded information (via digital recording) for students to receive and/ or demonstrate they know something -graphic organizers (flowcharts, Venn diagrams, mapping) -underlining and/ or highlighting words or phrases -texts that are customized based on the reading levels of students -questions that are customized based on the comprehension level of students -supplementary materials such as articles/ magazine, etc. related to topics
comic
books,
-word walls -a variety of forms of expression such as drawing, acting, poetry -student journals and learning logs

SUM M ER BLUES TO SUM M ER BREEZ E Summer is an exciting season for families for several reasons! Many teens (and parents) are anticipating late mornings, no homework and not being on a routine schedule. For these reasons, many parents enroll their teens in a structured activity or encourage them to find a summer job to keep them active during the summer months. Unfortunately, many of these activities and/ or transportation are not cost-effective and really put a financial strain on parents. The end result, parents opt out, allowing their teen to do almost nothing productive throughout the summer months. Not all teens do not do well with a non-routine schedule. Boredom and a lack of structure often leads to teens becoming involved in negative activities such as: experimenting with drugs and alcohol, petty theft, physical and verbal altercations with peers and/ or adults, dangerous play, etc. Teens can get into the most trouble during the summer due to their low involvement in pro social activities. So, what can parents do in order to go from summer blues to summer breeze?
