FACILITIES
Golden Bears football student-athletes receive some of the best medical support across the CIS. Along with a designated medical staff throughout the season, UofA varsity athletes also have access to the Glen Sather Clinic, which provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of orthopaedic and sport related injury.
Golden Bears football is based at Foote Field on the university’s South Campus. Foote Field is part of a massive sports complex, which also includes the Saville Community Sport Centre (SCSC) home of curling, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and training facilities utilized by UofA varsity athletes. While SCSC is used by both varsity athletes and the public, Saville’s High Performance Training and Research Centre is a state-of-the-art training facility reserved solely for the use of U of A varsity athletes and private groups and is where the Bears do their heavy lifting. In addition to the athletic facilities located on South Campus, Bears football also utilizes North Campus’ Butterdome, holding off-season workouts and training sessions
MEDICAL SUPPORT
SCHOLARSHIPS With Golden Bears football student-athletes receiving well over $100,000 in athletic scholarships for the 2013-14 school year, Golden Bears Football helps student-athletes financially, as they pursue a degree. In the competitive world of athlete assistance, Golden Bears Football provides financial support to its student-athletes at the same levels as all the top programs across CIS football.
WHAT WHAT IS IS B.O.M.B.? B.O.M.B.? “The term B.O.M.B. is an acronym which stands for the way Golden Bears Football is to be played. We aim at all times be in better physical condition than our opposition, allowing us to play the game with a level of physicality that will be unrivaled by our opponents. Our program also promotes the concept of establishing a sense of brotherhood amongst our student-athletes. We will build our teams as a family which under duress will stay together and be able to withstand any challenge put before us. In victory or defeat the ubiquitous nature of this brotherhood will always bind us together.” - Coach Morris

dergraduate class size is just 38 students, with 80 per cent of classes featuring 50 students, or less. AN ENGINEERING HOTBED Key to UAlberta’s reputation as a top five post-secondary institution in Canada is the Faculty of Engineering, which is one of Western Canada’s oldest engineering faculties. With 21 different degree options available, there’s an engineering option for everyone. A VIBRANT, GROWING CAMPUS Founded in 1910, UAlberta is one of Western Canada’s oldest universities and while there’s plenty of historic buildings on campus, there’s also no shortage of new facilities that are making both North and South Campus even better. Slated to open late 2014, the Physical Activity and Wellness Centre is a 110,688 square foot space that will house a brand new campus fitness centre, a world-class climbing centre and a variety of student spaces.
CENTRALLY LOCATED ON THE LRT Located on the south banks of the North Saskatchewan River and just a few minutes west of Old Strathcona - the city’s arts and culture hub - UAlberta is located centrally in one of Edmonton’s oldest and most energetic neighbourhoods, minutes from downtown. THE BEST ACADEMIC SUPPORT IN CIS FOOTBALL Transitioning from high school to university on the football field can be challenging, but making the move in the classroom can be just as difficult - especially at one of Canada’s most rigorous universities. With the aim of graduating 100 per cent of the athletes that come through our program, Golden Bears football has developed a set of strategic student-athlete supports that are aimed at positioning our student-athletes for success as they strive towards their degree. From your first training camp, to graduation, our academic supports are there to help you every step of the way.
ORIENTATION
STUDY HALL
Before any Golden Bears football player starts their academic career in the classroom, they’re positioned to succeed with an orientation session with their fellow first-year student-athletes at training camp. This orientation session provides instruction on everything from how to calculate your GPA, to how to get from one class to the next.
Once class starts, all first-year Bears attend daily study hall sessions during the week from 4-6:30 p.m. at Foote Field.
Along with orientation specifically for football student-athletes, all incoming Bears are given a psychoeducational assessment prior to starting school. This assessment helps the Bears academic support staff understand how individual student-athletes learn, in order to cater their academic plan - course load, type of courses - to suit how they learn best.
Whether students want to work in a quiet space, or collaboratively, all study hall sessions are staffed by study hall attendants, who are there to answer any questions. TUTORIAL SUPPORT Four separate tutors work with our program during the school year, specializing in physical education, calculus, statistics and english. Along with these tutors, Golden Bears football student-athletes also have access to learning strategists who work one-on-one with students to help them plan ahead and make sure they’re positioned to succeed.
