T
he Twelve Days of Christmas is one of the most misunderstood parts of the Church year, especially among Christians who are not members of a liturgical tradition. Contrary to popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but are the twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany! The origin and counting of the Twelve Days is complicated, and is related to differences in calendars, traditions, customs and cultures. In the Western Church, Epiphany is celebrated as the time the Wise Men or Magi arrived to present gifts to the young Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12). Traditionally there were three Magi, probably from the mention of three gifts, even though the biblical narrative never says how many Magi actually came. Gift-giving during the twelve days is an integral part of the holiday tradition in many contemporary societies. The Twelve Days of Christmas was not necessarily a secret catechism, but used as a summary of faith. In addition, the story also reminds us of how songs were often used to convey articles or truths in societies that learned more from the spoken (or sung) word than from the written. 1. True Love refers to God; The Partridge is Jesus; 2. Turtle Doves refers to the Old and New Testament; 3. French Hens refers to Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues; 4. Calling Birds refers to the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists; 5. Golden Rings refers to the Torah, the first Five Books of the Old Testament; 6. Geese A-laying refers to the six days of creation; 7. Swans A-swimming refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments; 8. Maids A-milking refers to the eight beatitudes; 9. Ladies Dancing refers to the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit; 10. Lords A-leaping refers to the ten commandments; 11. Pipers Piping refers to the eleven faithful apostles; 12. Drummers Drumming refers to the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed.
Christmas Tree Prayer Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. ~ Amen.
The Blessing of the Manger
God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. ~ Amen.
Today in the City of David a Savior has been born to you. Alpha? We have all asked at one time or other, "why am I here?" Alpha can help assist you in answering that question. Elementary/Middle School Faith Formation Faith Formation is an opportunity for your child to learn about our faith in a classroom environment surrounded by other kids their own age and faith. Our program has grown in number due to our parish’s faithfulness and enthusiasm. We currently offer two sessions for Kindergarten through 5th grades and one session for 6-8 grades. They are held on Wednesdays, session 1 is from 4:30-5:45pm and session 2 is from 6:157:30pm at Summerville Catholic School. Our curriculum is Loyola Press, Christ Our Life. Each week your child will learn something about their Catholic Faith. We hope you will join us for this wonderful and meaningful educational experience. For more information about any of our Faith Formation Programs please contact Jan Antor, Director of Faith Formation, at: 636-248-6460 or
[email protected].
Early Childhood Faith Formation Early Childhood is for ages 1-5 years of age. We gather each Sunday at the 9:30 or 11:30 Masses in Madden Hall (building up the hill from the church). We do not take attendance, so you can attend either the 9:30 OR 11:30 Mass and don't have to attend the same one every week. We do the SAME lesson for both Masses. Know that we are flexible and each week DOES NOT build on the previous weeks. Each week when you arrive, you will need to sign your child in and make him/her a name tag when dropping them off. Registration forms are available to the parish website or you can pick them up in the Early Childhood Room located in Madden Hall. If you have any questions please call Jan Antor, Early Childhood Coordinator at: 636-248-6460 or
[email protected].
LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLW) is a liturgical experience geared especially for children kindergarten to 4th grade. It mirrors the liturgy experience of the larger community in an engaging and interactive style. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is not formal religious education, nor is it intended to substitute for attendance at religious education sessions. Rather, it should be considered a partner to your child's continuing religious formation. We offer CLW at 9:30AM AND 11:30AM Sunday Masses on all weekends through the year. For more information please contact Jan Antor at: 636-248-6460 or

Scripture Reflection t is Christmas! Our Gospel reading on this festive holy day is the opening words of the Gospel of John. St. John says, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him.” That is why we celebrate today. Pope Francis opened his sermon on Christmas day last year by saying this: “Christmas is joy, religious joy, an inner joy of light and peace.” At Mass on Christmas Eve we hear, “I proclaim to you good news of great joy; today a Savior is born for us, Christ the Lord.” It is this joy we need to feel, this joy we need to carry to others. Many have expressed the joy of today. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said this about Christmas: “Joy is the true gift of Christmas. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness. And the joy we give will certainly come back to us… Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives.” The angel Gabriel greeted our Blessed Mother Mary with the Greek word Kaire! That means “Be joyful.” God is near us today; He is so near that He became a child. Let us take that joy and share it with others; let us take that joy and change our lives and the lives of others. When we say “Merry Christmas” let us mean it with every fabric of our being.
