Message from the Pastor November 25, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo: For the last 2 weeks I have focused on the great good the Church does, with so many people not knowing. Two weeks ago I focused on a local Houston ministry called Magnificat Houses, serving the poor and those struggling with mental illness. Last week I focused on how one religious community, the Congregation of Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart (MSC), serves people in 39 nations, including the U.S., through education, social services, hospice, healthcare, pastoral care, orphanages & elder care, etc. Today I am focusing on the good that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) does. The national CCHD collection normally takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving. But since we had the mission appeal last weekend, CCHD was moved to this weekend. The theme of this year's collection is "CCHD: Working on the Margins." Jesus told his disciples, “Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind & the lame (Lk. 14.15-24).” This is what CCHD does. The CCHD was launched in 1969 by the U.S. bishops as a Catholic anti-poverty initiative. For more than 45 years CCHD has addressed the problem of poverty by attacking its root causes and funding community projects that promote independence as a means of finding a permanent end to poverty. It might surprise you to know that 43 million Americans, including one in 5 children, live below the poverty line. There is a thin line: between eviction and home, between hunger and health, between unemployment and work, between anxiety and stability. This line is the poverty line. For a family of 4 that line is $24,257 a year. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau, Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States, 2015.) Many of these are considered “working poor,” which means that they work but do not make enough money to cover essentials like housing, health care, child care, and food. Or they have had a recent layoff, pay freeze, or retirement income decrease. For many, life is only getting harder. However, CCHD projects are helping many in need.
This Weekend: 2nd Collection—CCHD, see below Christmas Flowers, p. 7; Prayer for Firefighters, p. 8 Update on the Ignite Campaign, p. 8 Examples of CCHD-funded groups include Urban Tree Connection, which works with low-income communities to develop local gardening projects. Urban Tree Connection Coop has turned vacant land in Haddington, Pennsylvania, into space for food production, teaching low-income residents how to grow and sell food. These projects not only give residents access to nutritious foods but they also create an opportunity for people to develop leadership skills and build community bonds. With a grant from CCHD, the Parish Peace Project in Chicago aims to address the continuing violence in Latino neighborhoods and the large number of struggling Latino youth and young adults. This project, a collaboration between 15 parishes and the Office of Young Adult Ministry at the Archdiocese of Chicago, works with those caught up in the criminal justice system, brings support services to schools, as well as providing mental and medical health services to the undocumented. By connecting pastoral ministry, restorative justice work, and community organizing, the Parish Peace Project prepares young at-risk Latino men and women to build safer & stronger neighborhoods in Chicago. CCHD not only provides funding but also invests in the dignity of the poor and helps people to break the cycle of poverty by becoming self-reliant. Over the course of 45 years, CCHD has funded nearly 8,000 projects that enable the poor to come together and solve community problems. CCHD funds projects that produce real and lasting change. In parishes across the country, this collection gives us the opportunity to help make a difference and end the cycle of poverty in our communities. 25% of our donations are kept in our archdiocese to fund local projects, and the remaining 75% goes to the CCHD national office to support antipoverty initiatives across the United States. See p. 7 about Christmas Flower donations. See p. 8 for the Ignite Campaign update & the Christmas challenge. Next week we will publish our parish Christmas Gift List.
Praised be the Sacred Heart of Jesus! Now and forever, amen! Hãy chúc tụng Thánh Tâm Chúa Giêsu đến muôn đời, amen! ¡Alabado sea el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús! ¡Por siempre, amen!

Second Reading Gospel Homily Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven, (We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken
through the Prophets.

St. Florian
Dear God, through the intercession of our patron, Saint Florian, have mercy on the souls of our comrades who have made the supreme sacrifice in the performance of their duty, and on all who have gone before us after years of faithful discharge of their responsibilities which now rest on ourselves. Give us Grace to prepare each day for our own summons to Thy tribunal of justice. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Withersoever Thou callest me, I am ready to go. Merciful Father of all people, save me from all bodily harm, if it be Thy will, but above all, help me to be loyal and true, respectful and honorable, obedient and valiant. Thus fortified by virtue, I shall have no fear, for I shall then belong to Thee and shall never be separated from Thee. Amen. Friday, May 3, 2019 (May 4—feast day of St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters) Pray the rosary at 11:30 am and attend the 12:10 pm Mass at the Co-Cathedral. Praying for all deceased firefighters & those seriously ill, including depression.

“Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom does not belong to this world.” (J ohn 18:36) How often do we put all our time & energy into building a kingdom here on earth, forgetting that life here is short? The real kingdom is in the next life. Yet how much time & energy do we invest in working for that eternal kingdom?
A Christmas Gift to the Parish Would it not be wonderful that we reach and then exceed our parish goal by Christmas? Is it possible? Certainly it is possible when every household makes a sacrificial pledge! When only 167 households have pledged so far, out of 1914 total households, we can easily exceed our goal! Remember, the parish retains 33% of all payments under our goal. Then the parish retains 67% after we exceed our goal. Any pledges are to be in addition to your normal parish collections & DSF. Fr. Lawrence W. Jozwiak Due to an early bulletin deadline, the weekend collection amounts for Nov. 17 / 18 were not available.

Let Us Be Prepared! First Sunday of Advent is December 2!
p. 13
ADVENT season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas). We are all different, and we are all in different places on our personal journey of life. So with that in mind, we have attempted to compile a list of some of the opportunities for your spiritual growth this Advent. We hope you find them helpful.

Soy rey.
