Important News From The Nurse February 24, 2016
I would like to inform you that we have had a few cases of Strep Throat in the building. Individuals with Strep Throat may present the following: o o o o o
Red and swollen tonsils/throat Sore or “scratchy’ throat Difficulty swallowing Headache and/or stomach ache fevers
Strep Throat is caused by bacteria and can be easily spread to others. It is very important that individuals wash their hands and avoid touching their faces, especially their mouths. It is also important that individuals cover their coughs and sneezes with tissue or their inner elbow. Strep Throat is diagnosed with a lab test done by a healthcare professional. Antibiotics are used to treat Strep Throat. It can resolve within days to weeks. As a reminder, any student diagnosed with Strep Throat must remain out of school until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours-this is school policy. If you have any questions, or if your child is diagnosed with Strep Throat, please contact me at (413) 593-9090 x 208 or

There has also been the presence of viruses causing flulike symptoms which include fever above 100.1, severe congestion and cough, body aches, chills, and extreme tiredness. Some of the current viruses cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Again, it is very important that individuals wash their hands and avoid touching their faces, especially their mouths. It is also important that individuals cover their coughs and sneezes with tissue or their inner elbow. Students should not be sharing drinks with each other. As a reminder, any student with fevers above 100.1, and/or vomiting or diarrhea, must remain out of school until they have been symptom free for 24 hours without the use of medications to prevent the symptoms-this is school policy. If you have any questions, or if your child is experiencing the above symptoms, please contact me at (413) 593-9090 x 208 or

VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER… MEDICATIONS IN SCHOOL: A reminder to all students and parents that students ARE NOT PERMITTED to carry medications of ANY KIND on them in school. This includes over-the-counter medications including, but not limited to, cough drops, skin ointments, pain relievers, and cold medications. This is not just a school regulation but a state law instituted for the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff. If a student needs a medication that the school does not supply, parents can bring the medication to the nurse with the appropriate form completed. There is a Doctor/Parent Medication authorization form for any meds that are not supplied by the school/ordered by the school physician. There is also a parent authorization form for the meds that are ordered by the school physician and supplied by the school. For your convenience these forms are included in this flier and can be located in the Nurse’s Corner of the School’s website. Any medications brought to the nurse must be in the original container. If they are a prescription medication, the prescription label must be attached and Nurse’s office and administered by the Nurse or appropriately trained delegate.
