The LIA, my co-chairs, all the committee members and I are looking forward to seeing you at the 35th International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO®), which this year returns to the beautiful city of San Diego. We have worked hard to ensure that ICALEO 2016 lives up to the status as the most important laser material processing conference in the world, with an exciting program featuring over 200 presentations and posters on the latest in laser research. Many of these presentations are peer reviewed, ensuring ICALEO will provide another outstanding opportunity to learn about advances in laser material processing. As always, it will also be a great way to network with scientists, engineers and researchers from all over the world, to meet old friends and to make new friends. At the opening plenary session, we will visit Mars, self-driving cars, and revisit LIGO. A big focus this year is on the closing session, with presentations covering applications from iPhones® to planes, revisiting what you thought you knew but may be surprised by new developments, and to hear about new ideas and processes expanding your horizon. I hope to see you all Sunday evening all the way to Thursday afternoon, attending the best ICALEO yet.

Closing Plenary Session: Emerging Areas for Laser and Photonics Usage Thursday, October 20 | 1:00pm Session Chair: Silke Pflueger, DirectPhotonics, Inc., Los Gatos, CA USA This year’s closing plenary talks will highlight unique, emerging areas for laser and photonics usage. A few years ago, there were just a few laser based processes used in mobile electronics but within a few years these processes have increased by an order of magnitude. On the other side of the spectrum, paint stripping for planes has been around for decades and we will hear how it now has finally reached industrial viability. Rounding out the session are talks about agriphotonics and underwater use of lasers, both applying lasers in new and exciting ways.
Invited Plenary Speakers: Agriphotonics Cather Simpson, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand Lasers in Mobile Electronics Magnus Bengtsson, Coherent, Inc., Santa Ana, CA, USA High-power Laser Paint Stripping for Full-size Aircraft Stan Ream, EWI, Columbus, OH, USA

Student Paper Award Contest Future generations of laser industry experts have been contributing papers at ICALEO for 17 years. LIA once again will recognize the importance of student contributions with the 18th Annual ICALEO Student Paper Award. Not only does the student paper contest illuminate the great work of upand-coming researchers, but cash awards will be presented to the first-, second- and third-place winners. Winning papers are given the opportunity to be submitted to LIA's Journal of Laser Applications® for publication (papers will undergo a peer-review process). Student papers accepted for competition will be judged by an international panel based on originality of topic/material presented, scientific and technical merit, and presentation quality. Professors will not judge their own students’ papers. Prize winners will be announced during the Closing Plenary Session of ICALEO on Thursday, October 20th.

LASER MATERIALS PROCESSING CONFERENCE Conference Chair: Christoph Leyens, Fraunhofer IWS, Dresden, Germany
Sponsored by:
Industrial uses of lasers are ever expanding, powered by robust research activity. Every year, ICALEO®’s Laser Material Processing (LMP) Conference showcases the best research results and industrial innovations worldwide. ICALEO has been widely known as a forum for new ideas, collaboration and education. This year, we can all look forward to presentations that expand the boundaries of laser processing with more powerful lasers, innovative hybrid processes, and laser applications that push the boundaries of what has been done and what can be done. Welding takes up a large share of the conference followed by surface modification including cladding and coating. 3D printing or laser assisted machining is strongly represented, as are traditional, well established processes like cutting and drilling. Rounding out the conference are contributions simulating all these processes, to strengthen and support the results of more experimental papers. The high scientific and technical level of the LMP contributions is mirrored by many peer reviewed papers, thus disseminating the outstanding expertise of ICALEO speakers beyond the conference to the laser community worldwide.

LASER MICROPROCESSING CONFERENCE Conference Chair: Michelle Stock, mlstock consulting, Ann Arbor, MI USA Laser microprocessing of materials is required to achieve many of the manufacturing demands of today’s high tech products, from the latest smart gadgets to leading edge biomedical devices. ICALEO®’s Laser Microprocessing Conference is the premier event to learn about the latest trends and applications in these fast moving areas of development. Invited talks, along with oral presentations and poster contributions from the international laser processing community provide the most recent updates to the state-of-the-art. Papers from industrial and academic researchers make this conference a unique opportunity to interact with contributors on the leading edge of commercial use and those advancing technology, ranging from new hardware to new applications for the future. Highlights to the program include the growing application areas of surface texturing and functionalization. Of note this year, the program has been expanded in the area of microprocessing for biological applications, reflecting the increasing use of pulsed lasers to create new and improved results. The option to be peer-reviewed has added to the caliber of the submissions in this already high-level technical conference. We look forward to your participation and trust that this year, as always, the quality of the papers and networking will make this your most productive conference of the year.
