Welcome to Troy High's 2016-2017 school year! I hope that you are as excited as I am to start this new school year. I have been a proud member of the Troy High community for more than ten years, and in that time I've seen Troy High continue to be a shining example of public education at its very best. Our staff has had an extremely busy summer getting ready for the first day of school! I have no doubt that all of that work will be an integral part of our future successes. The first newsletter of the year has always been filled with lots of important information, and this year is no different. I have included information on district annual notices and THS policies and procedures. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about any information contained in our September newsletter. Each school year begins with a flood of emotions. We are missing our recent graduating class of 2016, while at the same time eagerly greeting and meeting a whole new freshman class (2020). Last year's group of seniors made us extremely proud as they excelled in all areas. They modeled what it truly means to push yourself to be the best version of oneself. Last year was another record year for us as we received countless local, state, national, and international recognition in a variety of areas. We will continue to work very hard to find ways to accomplish even more this year. Whether it's your first year at Troy High or your last year, we will accomplish some truly amazing things over the course of this year. I want to give our families something to ponder as we begin this school year. High school is the last part of the K-12 educational road. It's a time when we really push our students to be critical thinkers who feel ready to take on life after high school. The process seems slow at times, but the amount of growth that will occur over these four years will truly be remarkable. We are hopeful that your student maximizes the opportunities that we have worked very hard to provide for them. There is a level of high expectations and competitiveness at Troy High that brings out the very best in our students. Please continue to support and encourage your sons/daughters to do their very best day in and day out. I'm a firm believer in Carol Dweck’s work with the growth mindset and the power of believing that you can always improve, a.k.a. “The Power of Yet”. So let's work together to help your children continue to grow beyond what they initially thought was possible. I will communicate with you on a regular basis during the course of the school year. Monthly communications will come On Wednesday, September 21, in the form of these newsletters, and then on a weekly basis via Troy High will hold its annual a school messenger Friday afternoon e-blast. These blasts are Open House. Parents should reintended to give you the most recent and relevant information port to homerooms at 6:30 p.m. so that you can quickly read them and feel well informed on to pick up schedules and to hear current events. PA announcements (alphabetical I wish you and your family a smooth transition from the homeroom lists will be provided long and slow summer days to the shorter, quicker, and exwhen you arrive in the building). citing days that come during the fall. Go Colts! At 6:45 p.m., parents will be dis-

POLICIES & PROCEDURES Student Code of Conduct The Rights & Responsibilities/Code of Student Conduct may be found on the district's website at www.troy.k12.mi.us. It is suggested that both parents and students review this document before the start of the school year. If you do not have access to the internet, please stop by the Troy High Main Office.
Testing Out Students who believe that they can move faster than the pace of our advanced curriculum have the option of trying to “test out” of a class. While any student can attempt to test out, it is intended for those students who believe they already know the content of the class. Forms and test expectations for specific tests will be available some time in the spring. More details regarding testing out will be communicated in future Troy High-Lites.
Early Exam Procedure Students are expected to be present for their semester final exams. In the event that an emergency situation arises, parents should put in writing to THS principal Remo Roncone their request for an early test date. Only significantly compelling or unique situations will warrant the scheduling of an early exam. No teacher will provide an early exam to any student without written permission provided by the principal.
Attention Seniors Seniors should double check graduation status with their counselors particularly if graduation might be in jeopardy. All students are advised not to let up on studies and have their grades drop second semester. Colleges require eighth semester grades for those seniors who have been accepted, and a student's admission status can be jeopardized if his/her grades fall.
Senior Honors Convocation Eligibility for participation in the Senior Honors Convocation will be determined by final grades reported at the end of the seventh semester. If you have any questions about your status, please see your guidance counselor.
Procedure for Deliveries & Communication with Students During the School Day Again this year, we are asking for your cooperation with deliveries to and communication with students.
· If you have an item or message for your student, please drop it off at the
Security desk located outside of the Main Office. · Since guests are not permitted in school, we do not allow siblings, friends, or relatives to visit during the school day or make deliveries to students. All items must be dropped off at the Security desk. · We cannot allow fast food or take out lunch deliveries from parents, relatives, or friends. · Absences and early dismissal phone calls should be made as early as possible to provide the greatest amount of time possible for us to call students to the Attendance desk to pick up their early dismissal passes. · Finally, if you have a THS graduate in your household, please advise him/her to make arrangements to visit his/her former teachers and school before or after regular school hours. We will be restricting alumni visits during the regular work day unless special arrangements have been secured in writing by the host teacher. We appreciate your assistance with these procedures. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Main Office for clarification.

POLICIES & PROCEDURES (continued) Student Dress Code It is the responsibility of parents and students to see that school dress is appropriate and not disruptive to the educational process. We want all students to take pride in their appearance, pride in their education, and pride in their school. As we prepare our students for the world of work and promote learning in the school environment, students are expected to dress in compliance with the following guidelines. PLEASE READ THIS LIST CAREFULLY. The Code of Student Conduct was updated to include specific items that should be taken into consideration while shopping for back-to-school clothes. Female students should take special note of the guidelines listed below. 1. Students may wear shorts, skirts, or dresses that fall below mid-thigh. They must extend below the student's fingertips when their arms are at their sides. 2. No low-cut tops, halter tops, bare midriff tops, tank tops, or spaghetti strap tops may be worn either by boys or girls. See-through or open-mesh tops are also unacceptable when worn alone. Acceptable tops must have straps that are approximately three fingers wide. Cleavage should be covered appropriately. 3. No clothing with inappropriate messages may be worn. This includes sexual references, profanity, gang affiliation, alcohol, or drugs. 4. No hats, sweatbands, bandanas, or head coverings may be worn in school (prior to the start of school through the end of the school day) unless religiously mandated. 5. Clothing should be of proper fit and not excessively revealing. Baggy pants which display underwear, excessively tight shorts or spandex clothing, revealing tube-style tops, extra-short cutoff shorts and miniskirts, or revealing shirts which display bras are unacceptable. 6. For safety reasons, shoes must be worn at all times. Students who wear inappropriate clothing will be asked to change or call their parents to bring them appropriate clothing. Continued problems will result in discipline as outlined in the district’s Rights and Responsibilities - Code of Student Conduct, including Saturday detention or suspension.
Troy High Mission Statement The purpose of Troy High is to ensure learning for all members of the Troy High community.
Troy High Vision Statement Troy High will become an exemplary learning community that supports innovation and is committed to continuous improvement. Troy High will address the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs of its learners. Troy High will be a place where a collaborative community develops curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment to ensure all students learn.
Attendance Policy Reminders In August, the high school attendance policy was posted online with the Orientation packets. To excuse an absence, please call the Attendance Office at 248.823.2701 the day of the absence or the day following the absence. Remember, parents are to call within 24 hours of an absence. Parents are also requested to call the Attendance Office to check students in and out of school. Please try to schedule student appointments after school hours. Troy High School has a closed campus policy, and students are not allowed to leave or arrive late without checking through the Attendance Office. Students who are assigned Saturday detention and do not attend will be suspended from school for one day. The suspension will be recorded as an unexcused absence. Students who are more than five minutes late to a class will be given an absence.
Closed Campus Policy Please be reminded that Troy High has a closed campus policy and students are not to leave during the school day without parent permission. Students who are excused to leave school must check out through the Attendance Office, and when they return, check back into the Attendance Office. Parents, please do not excuse your child to leave campus to go out to lunch
Student ID Cards Students are required to carry their picture ID cards during school and at all student activities. (The ID cards were distributed at the summer orientations.) The ID card will be used for identification, to charge student lunches, and as a hall pass and library card.

THS Clinic Info Clinic Volunteers Needed We are in need of clinic volunteers. The morning shift runs from 7:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and the afternoon shift runs from 10:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. NO medical training or experience is necessary. New volunteers will work their first few shifts with an experienced volunteer. You can work as much as you like or as little as you like. If you are interested in this opportunity or if you just have any questions, please contact Cathy Berlage at 248.952.5233 or
[email protected]. Frequently Asked Questions about the THS Clinic Who works in the clinic? Parent volunteers, not medical personnel, run the clinic every day of the school year. What do the parent volunteers do? They provide basic first-aid for minor injuries, including dispensing many band-aids and ice packs. Volunteers DO NOT diagnose any illness. They may only dispense medication that is prescribed and authorized by parent and physician. They may not dispense Tylenol, aspirin, ibuprofen, or other nonprescription medications - we DO NOT stock these in our clinic. They provide a listening ear and lots of TLC. They assist students in getting rides and permission to go home when ill. A Troy High administrator is always available to assist our parent volunteers. What else does the clinic provide? Some of the items stocked are feminine products, contact lens solution, cough drops, bandaids, ice packs, and safety pins. How does a student use the clinic? Students must have a pass from a teacher or administrator to use the clinic. If the student needs to rest for a while, the student is given 20 minutes and then must return to class or get parent permission to go home. After five visits per semester, the student must see an administrator before using the clinic - this is to discourage "frequent flyers" from missing too much class time. How can parents help the clinic? The most important way you can help is to FILL OUT YOUR CHILD'S EMERGENCY CARD COMPLETELY AND ACCURATELY! That way, if a problem arises, we know of any special health concerns and we have a way to contact you. Secondly, you can volunteer your time in the clinic. Contact Cathy Berlage at 248.952.5233 or
[email protected] if interested.

All-Night Party A note to all Parents of Seniors: Your Senior won’t want to miss the 2017 All-Night Party!! Welcome back to Troy High as your senior begins an exciting year. By now you may have heard of the Troy High All-Night Party (ANP) – a once-in-a lifetime, fun-filled, safe, alcohol-free, carefully-planned and adult-chaperoned celebration that has been thoroughly enjoyed by 80 percent or more of past graduating classes. It’s a perfect chance for your senior to enjoy one last event with hundreds of classmates, with plenty of good food, games, prizes and exciting activities at a wonderfully decorated Troy High gym from 9:00 pm until 5:00 am the next morning. This certainly completes the graduation day experience for all involved. And this memorable party is the creation of dozens of parent, student and faculty volunteers. An all-inclusive ticket to the ANP is a great gift idea for your senior or his/her friends. Be sure your senior doesn’t miss out by getting a ticket early at the reduced price of $50 through the end of the first semester; $60 until Spring break; $75 until the day before graduation and $100 at the door the night of the party (cash only). You can buy tickets in the Main Office, with checks payable to THANP. While these tickets are transferable, they are non-refundable, except in extraordinary circumstances. Perhaps you’d like to help out at the All-Night Party? If so, we’d love to hear from you! We’re recruiting volunteers from every class who are looking for a very rewarding experience. For parents of younger Colts, this is a perfect way to get involved at Troy High. And for parents of seniors, volunteering on the planning team or helping at the party provides a wonderful opportunity to watch their brand new grad have a memorable time with dear friends before taking on the world. This volunteer opportunity is so satisfying that some of our devoted planning team members joined us over a decade ago!! So, feel free to reach out to us, your 2017 All-Night Party Co-Chairs, for more info. Stay tuned for reminders of this upcoming event. And be sure to cherish the memories in the months ahead!
Go Colts!!!

Troy High Athletics Athletic Eligibility Rules & Regulations
Welcome Mr. House as Troy High’s new Athletic Director!
Troy School District follows the MHSAA rules and regulations with the exception of requiring 25 credit hours (five classes) for eligibility instead of 20 credit hours. No student shall compete in any athletic contest who is 19 years of age unless the student's 19th birthday occurred on/or after September 1st of the current school year. A student may compete for four first semesters and four second semesters for a total of eight semesters. The seventh and eighth semester must be consecutive. A student who transfers to the Troy School District is ineligible for athletic competition for one semester. A full semester is one in which the transfer occurred before the fourth Friday after Labor Day or the fourth Friday of February. A student may become eligible by falling into one of fifteen exemptions allowed by the MHSAA. The athletic director must make the determination whether or not the student falls into one of these exemptions. No student shall compete in any athletic contest who does not have on file in the Athletic Trainer's office a completed physical card dated after April 15, 2016, in which a physician states that the student has passed a physical examination and is physically able to participate in interscholastic competition. No student shall compete in any athletic contest during any semester who does not have to his/her credit on the books of the school represented, at least 25 credit hours of work for the last semester during which he/she shall have been enrolled in grades 9-12 inclusive. Freshmen in their first semester in high school may compete without reference to their eighth-grade record. The only exceptions are students who transfer into the Troy district, graduating seniors, and freshmen who have received advanced eligibility. All exceptions must be approved by the Athletic Director. To participate in athletic competition, the student must be passing 25 credit hours (five classes) when checked. Checks are required at intervals of not more than ten weeks. If the student is not passing five classes, that student is ineligible for competition until the next check but not less than for the next Monday through Sunday. At the end of the Monday through Sunday period, the student must present the coach and/or Athletic Director with a form signed by the student’s teachers declaring that the student would receive a passing grade for the course from the beginning of the semester if a grade was given at that time. If a student cannot present this form for five classes, he/ she is ineligible for competition for the next Monday through Sunday and so on until they become eligible by presenting passing grades for five classes.
Athletic Ticket Prices Tickets for all athletic events are $5 at the gate for students and adults. Punch-cards are no longer available, but existing punch-cards will be honored. Athletic passes are available and are good at any athletic event at Troy High School and Athens High School for the entire school year, except OAA and MHSAA tournaments. High school student passes are $45. Adult passes are $65 each, or two for $95. Middle school student passes (grades 6-8) are $35 and are available for sale at the middle schools. Athletic passes for parents may be purchased at the high school’s main office or at the gate. Locker Room Use Students who use the locker rooms should be aware of the security of their possessions. Locker room access will be restricted during regular class periods; however, since many students use the locker rooms during the day and after school, administration suggests the following: • Carry your own lock and utilize a locker. You may have to share a locker with a teammate. Remember to remove your possessions and lock each day. • If your book bag will not fit in a locker, ask your coach to designate a place to keep your belongings close to your practice area. • Do not leave possessions unattended in the locker room. Doing so will invite theft. • Do not bring valuable items, jewelry, or large amounts of money to school. • Mark or engrave all possessions with your student identification number. Keep a record of serial numbers. • Keep receipts for CD’s, CD or tape players and headphones, expensive articles of clothing, sports equipment, shoes, or any other valuable possession. • Report all suspicious activity or persons immediately to your coach, the trainer, or the Athletic Director. • Report all thefts to your coach immediately, and file a theft report. Forms are available in the Main Office.

Bring Your Own Device The Troy School District is proud of its One 2 World initiative that has brought wireless technology to 3 rd through 8th grade students this year. Students are able to access web based applications, conduct research, and perform tasks previously not possible without a tablet device. Since inception of this initiative two years ago, the Troy School District has always intended to have a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) environment at the high school level and never intended to provide individual student devices (1:1) like the elementary and middle schools. Consequently, Troy's 8th grade students will turn in their iPads at the end of this school year. Those devices will be repurposed for next year’s 3rd graders over the summer. You should know that Troy’s high schools do have technology available for student use at school. Both Troy and Athens High Schools have many computer labs, laptop carts, iPad carts, and various other computers available throughout the building. These devices are available for teachers to bring into their classrooms as well. Although there is technology available, students are encouraged to bring their own personal digital device to school for use throughout their high school experience. This will ensure that they have a device available that is comfortable to them as desired throughout their school day. Whether or not a student uses a digital device in high school is the choice of each student and his/her family. Many families have asked if student device discounts are available or for a list of recommended devices to purchase. The District has posted this technology discount information, instructions to install Microsoft Office for student’s devices for free, and a device chart on our website. This will allow those families that would like to take advantage of these discounts to do so. A “Discounts” page is located on our website under myTSD – Tech Discounts Button: http://www.troy.k12.mi.us/apps/pages/ index.jsp?uREC_ID=363152&type=d&pREC_ID=917043. Troy School District Annual Notices In addition to the notices provided on these pages, Troy School District annual notices are listed on the Troy School District web site at www.troy.k12.mi.us. The notices are required by law to provide parents with information regarding student privacy and non-discrimination policies. Directory Information, Educational Records, Pupil Rights Amendment, Student Immunizations, Nondiscrimination Policy, and Career and Technical Programs can be accessed at the web site or by contacting the Troy School District Community Relations Office at 248.823.4035.
Opting Out of Providing Information to Military Parents have the right to opt-out of providing directory information to third parties, including military. Parents must send a letter to the Principal specifically requesting that this directory information should not be disclosed. Upon receipt of the letter, confirmation will be sent acknowledging your request.
Opting Out of Reproductive Health/AIDS The Troy School District offers a comprehensive program of instruction in reproductive health education. Reproductive Health and/or AIDS and other communicable disease prevention education is taught in the required Health I course. According to the State School Aid Act of Fiscal Year 1996, you have the right to review materials to be used in this course and to observe instruction in your student’s classroom while these classes are being taught. The Troy educational community is proud of their educational program. All materials included in the sexuality components of the abstinence based health curriculum have met with the approval of the health educators, the Sex Education Advisory Committee (which includes parents, health care professionals, clergy, students, and educators), and the Troy Board of Education. The Board and the administration are very interested in parent involvement in their student's education. To that end and in compliance with this statute, the Troy Board of Education has made the materials available for your review. If you wish to review these materials, please contact the principal's office to set a date and time. By law you have the right to exclude your student from participation in the class periods which include HIV and other communicable disease prevention instruction, as well as reproductive health and/or family planning instruction. If you wish to exercise this right to excuse your student without penalty, please send a letter to the principal making your request to exclude. This letter must be sent to the principal's office prior to the beginning of the semester in which the class will be taken. Please specify whether the exclusion request is for the current school year of instruction or if the exclusion is intended to be for the current school year of instruction and all future instruction within this school.
Troy School District Medication Policy Regulations
State and district policies dictate school medication procedures. Please note the following procedures that must be followed so students may receive medication at school. An Authorization for Medication form (available in the Main Office or online at www.troycolts.org under parent links) must be filled out completely and signed by the parent/guardian. This form must contain the dosage, route, and time of administration. Medication must be in the original container clearly marked with the student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage, and the time of administration. (This includes nonprescription medication.) Any changes in the dosage, route, or time of administration must be accompanied by a new authorization form. All controlled-substance medications will be counted and recorded upon receipt from the parent/guardian. Medications will be stored and kept locked. The parent/guardian will be notified of the need for more medication. The parent/guardian will need to pick up unused medication at the end of the year or when there is a change in medication.
Technology Acceptable Use Policy
The updated Troy School District Technology Acceptable Use Policy was given to students at Orientation. Students and parents are asked to read and sign, and students are requested to turn in the form on the first day of school during homeroom.
Drug-Free School Notice
The Troy School District participates in the Drug-Free Schools program, and as required by that program, this notice is to inform all students, staff, and parents that the use of illicit drugs and the unlawful possession and use of alcohol is wrong and harmful.

Student Accident Insurance
Volunteer Background Check
Troy Public Schools does not provide insurance for student injuries or damage/loss to personal property. State statute provides Troy Public Schools with immunity to tort liability. Your homeowner’s policy may cover property that is damaged or lost from the school premises; e.g., automobiles, bicycles, band instruments, calculators, etc.
The Troy School District requires a Criminal Conviction History report on all volunteers who drive on field trips or work with students without the direct supervision and presence of a classroom teacher or TSD/TSS employee. This includes parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, any family members over the age of 14, Troy School District and TSS employees, and other community member volunteers.
The Board of Education, as a public service, has arranged to make Student Accident Insurance Coverage available to all students. The benefit options have been designed to respond to diverse family insurance needs. This coverage can help decrease the burden of unexpected medical expenses, including those left unpaid due to family insurance deductibles and co-payments. For your convenience, the insurance application and brochure are available in the main office, or on line at the following website: www.sas-mn.com (under K12 students/ parents, then search for Troy School District). If you wish to enroll in this insurance plan, you have the option to enroll online (2016-2017 Purchase Online option) at the above website, or you can complete the application and return it directly to Student Assurance Services. Coverage will become effective at 12:01 a.m. following the date the envelope form and premium is postmarked by the U.S. Post Office. Detach and retain the summary of coverage for your records. All questions regarding the coverage should be directed to Sonny Heinrich, agent, at the toll free number of 1-800-328-2739.
If you expect to drive on field trips or work with students without the direct supervision and presence of a classroom teacher or TSD/TSS employee, you are urged to submit the form as soon as possible. These forms are available on the district's website and in the THS Main Office.
TSD Pesticide Management Program Notification As part of the Troy School District's pest management, pesticides are occasionally applied. The Troy School District currently has a contract with Elite Pest Management for internal/ external pest management needs. The Troy School District has adopted an Integrated Pest Management Plan, which involves using various methods of control (mechanical, biological, and environmental). Pesticide Applications only occur if absolutely necessary. If a pesticide is applied during the year, including the summer months when school is not in session, a public notice will be posted at the common entrances of the school buildings at least 48 hours prior to the application. You have the right to be informed by U.S. mail postmarked at least three days prior to any pesticide application that might be needed in your school. If you would like to receive notification by U.S. mail, please notify the TSD Operations Office (pesticide notification) at 1140 Rankin Dr. Troy, MI in writing. In an emergency, pesticides may be applied without prior notice, but you will be provided notice following any such application. To receive notification, please complete the following information. If the form is not returned, we will assume you do not want to be notified. Should you have questions or concerns about pest management within your school/work place, please contact the Principal or the Superintendent's office.
