I. Purpose: Students will combine knowledge of correct dance technique with related strength-building and cardiovascular training for a well-rounded artistic and physical education. This course will cover the basic technique for jazz, ballet, modern, hip hop, and social dance. Beyond the actual execution of dance steps, students will learn technical vocabulary, dance history, and an appreciation of dance as an art form. Students will also learn about general anatomy and personal fitness topics including injury prevention and proper warm-up and cool down strategies. Upon completion of this course, students will possess knowledge and tools for achieving lifelong fitness, an ability to evaluate themselves as well as their peers, gain greater kinesthetic awareness and a feeling of greater self-worth. Dress Code: Students will wear an Anderson Dance t-shirt with black dance pants and are highly encouraged to wear dance shoes (jazz shoes or dance paws) for dance technique days and supportive tennis shoes for aerobic activities. If a student does not have dance shoes, they will dance barefoot. Hair must be pulled back into a clean ponytail, bun, braid, etc. and secured with a hair tie. Plan to purchase a special pack of ponytail holders to keep in your dance locker. This will ensure that you always have one for class. Jewelry including rings, watches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings (studs are okay) will not be worn to class as they are distracting and potentially dangerous to the moving dancer.
If you are sick, you must dress out. Please bring a note from your parents or a doctor with a

phone number if an injury or illness will limit your participation in daily activities. You will be excused from participating in physical activities and an alternative written assignment will be given to satisfy your daily grade. Students will be given FIVE minutes to dress out in dance clothes and be sitting in roll call lines. Students will be given SEVEN minutes to change back into their school clothes at the end of class. Class Participation: Students are expected to be on time to class. Tardies will be recorded and students must be inside the athletic lobby door before the bell. Parents will be notified after the THIRD tardy. Per campus policy, a referral to the Principal will be issued after the FIFTH tardy and a Saturday Detention will be assigned. Regular class attendance is very important as it is difficult to develop proper dance technique when lessons have been missed. Improvement as a dancer requires significant dedication. Beyond attendance students must take an active role in participating in class. It is not enough to simply “show up,” students must show focus and demonstrate a positive attitude toward working hard and learning the material. Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher when an absence has occurred for any make-up assignments, journals, tests, etc.
V.
Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones are not allowed in dance class at any time. Please leave your phone locked in your dance locker during class. Any cell phones seen during class will be taken up and turned in to the front office.
VI. -
Written Assessments: Students will be given a few written quizzes testing their knowledge on general vocabulary and terminology presented in class. All material for written quizzes will be provided in class.
VII. -
Dance Skills/Physical Activity Assessments: Students will be evaluated at least once per six weeks on the dance skills and/or physical activities they have learned. Students will be evaluated on proper technique, performance, memory & timing, and execution quality. Effort is the most important factor in these evaluations.
-
VIII. -
Dance Journal: Students will maintain a class journal to track their progress and take class notes. This journal will be kept in the small gym in your class’s designated storage bin. Your journals will be graded periodically throughout each six weeks. When an absence has occurred, students must make up the missed journal assignment immediately upon return to class. All journals
must include the journal number, the date, the topic/question, and a 3-5 sentence response for full credit. Journal Progress Checks will count as Written Assessment grades. IX.

This year’s show will be on Friday, December 6th and the dress rehearsal will be on Thursday, December 5th Participation in the dress rehearsal and the show are mandatory and a required component for your first semester grade.
