A Note from Mr. Murphy Dear Rocklin Academy students and families, I regret to inform you that as a requirement of the credentialing process I am required to start my student teaching and will not be returning as the Physical Education teacher at Rocklin Academy Turnstone for the 2016-2017 school year. I have had an incredible time learning from some of the best educators in the industry and working with the best kids and families in Northern California. I hope to return to the Rocklin Academy family of schools once I have earned my masters degree in education and my California multi subject teaching credentials. Thank you, Sean Murphy

By Keri Reno Are you starting to look for summer activities for your student? Why not try a virtual summer camp? Virtual summer camps can be a hands-on learning experience where your kids can dig into different themes, such as science, “Far out Future and Flight,” space and ocean themes. Students might read books, watch videos, explore outside, and even create projects. Some camps are free while others do have some fees associated with them. To find a virtual camp tailored to your student just follow this link.
No Charging On
Lunch Accounts Effective Monday, May 23rd
Beginning Monday, May 23rd, students will not be allowed to charge to a negative balance on their lunch account—they must have a positive balance or cash. If your child has a negative lunch account balance, It is imperative the account is paid in full before the last day of school. Please make sure your child has money on their account if they plan to eat hot lunch. The lunch room supervisor will not be allowed to give students a hot lunch if they do not have a positive balance. If their account is negative or zero, they will make a phone call home to ask you to bring money or your child will be served a courtesy lunch of crackers and whole fruit. Please be sure your child’s lunch account is prepaid. For your convenience, use myschoolbucks.com! Any funds remaining in your child’s lunch account at the end of the year will follow over to next year’s account. For sixth grade students going to a RUSD middle school next year, their lunch account balance will follow them to their new school. Thank you!

No Travel Independent Study Offered in May Per the Rocklin Academy Parent & Student Handbook, independent study for travel or other unexcused reasons will not be offered during the last month of the school term. ISPs for illnesses or other excused absences will still be provided. Students who are absent from school without a valid excuse for three full days in one school year will be classified as truant per California Ed Code. For more details please reference the Attendance, Chronic Absence and Truancy Policy section of the Parent & Student Handbook.
ISPs – Help Us Reach Our Goal ISPs help your child stay current with classwork and also help the school recoup funding for each absence—this amounts to around $60 per day per absence! In April alone, we stand to lose over $5,000 in funding due to outstanding ISP’s, which directly impacts what we can provide for our students. With the winter cold and flu season winding down, there are a large number of ISPs at home waiting to be turned in. Don’t wait! Turn them in today! Through your partnership with our school, we can make a real difference!
Need Volunteer Hours? A generous community member has donated multiple boxes and bags full of children’s books in excellent condition! We could use some help sorting through the collection of books, determining the book’s grade level and logging the book title and level into a spreadsheet. This would be done at a work station and computer here in the office during office hours. If you are interested in helping with this task, please contact Wendi Brabon at
[email protected].
Trailer Needed for Piano Delivery One of our awesome Rocklin Academy families has offered to donate a piano to our school! We are in need of a low, enclosed trailer (with a ramp if possible) that can be used to transport the piano to school. If you have a trailer or know of one that can be used for this piano donation, please contact our front office at 916-632-6580 x8003 or stop by. You can also email:

Your child has the power to make a positive impact on the lives of blood cancer patients! Our school will be joining others across the United States in a program that will be instrumental in raising funds for lifesaving cancer research. They’ll be taking part in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School & Youth Program Pennies for Patients. During the three-week period of May 2nd to May 19th, students collect spare change to support LLS’s mission: To cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Last year our school did an amazing job raising $1600 for this worthy cause. Our goal this year is to raise $2000. What your child will learn about service, leadership and philanthropy will be immeasurable. And, the impact they’ll have on patients’ lives will be limitless. Many LLS-funded advances are already helping not only blood cancer patients, but people with other conditions, including solid tumors and autoimmune diseases. In fact, LLS has invested more than $875 million in research to advance therapies and save lives. In this week’s Wednesday Weekly Folder, your child will receive his or her own box for collecting spare change. Judging by past programs, they’ll be proud to fill the box, with change to spare. Spare change could be hiding anywhere: Under the couch cushions, in the pockets of pants and jackets hanging in the closets. Your child has the power to convert that spare change into funding for treatments and cures that can save lives…not someday, but today! We are encouraging students to show their “Kid Power” and raise funds on their own. We want to show that kids can make a difference. Our theme this week will be “Super Heroes” and “Super Kids” who use their “Super Powers” to help others in need.
Individual class goals and whole school goals: Pennies Pies (class goal)- Each class will set a goal amount to raise and if they reach that goal then that teacher (or someone willing to fill in for them) would get a Pie in the face by a student. Crazy for a Cure (RA school goal)- If our school reaches the goal amount of raising $2,000.00, then our Principal would come up with a crazy thing to do (ex: kiss a pig, put on a chicken suit, eat something crazy gross...) Make Leukemia Disappear (each class)-Each class will place the word "leukemia" in the classroom and remove a letter each time they raise a certain amount (such as $20.00 per letter, class will decide amount for each letter).
Pennies for Patients Upcoming Dates / Themes Pennies for Patients Kick-Off Rally (April 29th at 2:30 pm) Week 2 (May 9-13): Teacher dress down/Student Dress up Day (Friday, May 13) Week 3 (May 16-20) Last Week: Crazy for a Cure Day (Thursday, May 19) Dress up with crazy hair, clothing, etc. to show your support to help find a cure. Thank you and your child in advance for helping patients with blood cancers live longer, better lives.
If you did not get a chance to pre-purchase a yearbook, a limited quantity of extras are available to purchase for $20. Please email Lauren Powell:
