FOURTH GRADE BOYS CURRICULUM OUTLINE 2012/2013 TORAH STUDIES- RABBI BORUCH TZVI FRIEDMAN
Tefillah: We start each day with Tefillat Shacharis, where the students spend between 30 – 40 minutes reciting the prayers aloud and in unison. This year, we will be learning the Tefilla of Yehi Chevod, all the Hallelukahs (said after Ashrei), and the Brachot of the Shma (the blessings before the recitation of the Shma and after the shma.) Time is dedicated each week teaching Biurei Tefilla. We will be focusing on the Birchat Hashachar /morning blessings, and the Shmone Esrei –where we will be explaining and looking at each bracha and their meanings. The boys will be davening Mincha in the afternoon.
Kriyah - Reading: The kriyah program taught in 2nd and 3rd grade will be continued to be taught with lessons every week stressing and reviewing different reading skills. Examples of these skills is letter recognition, single letters with Nekudos, Patach Genuva, Cholum and the Cholum Chaser, the Articulated Vov, knowledge of the different vowels/sounds, the shva na and shva nach, reading silent borrowers, the difference between the Shin and Sin. The goal is to be able to read any given passage with accuracy, confidence, fluency, and speed. Page 1 of 4
Chumash / Rashi: Parshat Vayishlach, Vayeishev, Miketz, Vayigash and Vayechi. Stress will be placed on reading, translation and Rashi skills. Students will be able to identify the shorashim/roots of a selected number of Hebrew words in the text. They will be able to read the pesukim with understanding. Students will identify a dibur hamatchil in Rashi, and learn to find Rashi’s question and answer. Students will learn with vocabulary flashcards, color coding, and projects. I will be recording p’sukim on the homework hotline for students hear and review at home. Halacha: We will learn about the various holidays and other special occasions throughout the year. Besides studying the various holidays, we will do a separate unit on Brachot (Brachot Rishonot and Brachot Acharonot). There will be a Brachos Bee at the end of the unit.
Novi: We will be learning the Book of Yehoshua, which tells the story of the Jewish People’s entry into the settlement of the Land of Israel after the death of Moshe. Various moral and ethical lessons will be extracted from the text. Review sheets are given out for each perek.
Parshat Hashavua: Each week students will receive a question and answer sheet on the weekly Torah Reading. Sheet should be reviewed over the weekend and signed by parent. We also will incorporate critical thinking and group participation into the lessons derived from the weekly portion.

Yediot Klaliot: We will review last year’s curriculum specifically: Months of the year, six brachot said before eating food, the avot and emahot, the five books of the Torah, the days of the week and what was created on each day, the shalosh regalim, the 12 tribes, the names of the tefillot, the Parshiot of Breishit, Shmot, vayikra, Bamidbar and Devarim, the 7 types of fruits of Eretz Yisroel, the 10 plagues, the gematria for all letters of the alef bet, the fast days and why we fast, the brachot said on thunder, lightning and rainbow, Borei Nefashot, Al Hamichya, the 4 Parshiot, and the 7 Mitzvot Bnei Noach. The new facts that will be discussed and taught will be: The holidays and dates in the months of Nissan until Elul, the 10 commandments, the list of the Neviim, the 5 megillot and when we read them.We will learn the basic terms and names of Tefillot like Kaddish, Kedusha, Chazarat Hashatz, Hallel, Ya’ale Ve’yavo, Al Hanisim, Kiddush Levana, Neila, Birchat Hagomel, Avinu Malkeinu and Tefillat Haderech.
Mishna: The text we will learning is Maseches Brachos. The objectives will be 1) To introduce the student to the concept of Torah Sheb’al Peh. 2) Have students understand the relationship between Mishnayos and Chumash. 3) Learn what a machlokes is and the reasons behind it. Students will show 1) Ability to read selected mishnayos. 2) Ability to explain selected mishnayos. 3) Understanding of the history and structure of the Mishna.

Middot: Positive Middot will be reinforced throughout the day and through every subject. This year we will be following the program put together by the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation doing projects, assignments, & hearing stories. Some of the lessons we will be learning include: Hakarat Hatov (appreciation), Nikayon (cleanliness), Kibud Horim/Morim (respecting parents), Emet (truth), Shalom (peace), Savlanut (patience) and Kavod Habriyot (respecting Hashem’s creations). We will be working with the school therapist, Yocheved Gohari on a Bullying prevention program.
Homework Policy: Every Tuesday, Thursday, and weekend is Hebrew Homework night. Homework will include reviewing p’sukim with rashi, mishnayos, worksheets, and parsha sheets to review every weekend.
