PALOS VERDES PENINSULA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
Cornerstone at Pedregal Elementary School 6069 Groveoak Place Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275 (310) 378-0324 Fax: (310) 378-1484 Dear Cornerstone Families, Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 school year! I am very excited to be back at Cornerstone Elementary School for my fourth year as your principal. For those families new to Cornerstone, this is the beginning of my 18th school year with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. It is an honor to lead Cornerstone, and I would like to welcome everyone back for another exciting year at our esteemed school. As we start out, please mark three important events on your calendar. First, we have our New Family Social on Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on the kindergarten playground. Say hello to old friends and make some new friends. Second is the first day of school on Monday, August 29, 2016. Please remember that the first day of school is also a minimum day with dismissal for all students at 12:00 p.m. The third event is our mandatory New Family Orientation on Monday, August 29, 2016 from 8:45-11:45 a.m. in the MPR. This is a great opportunity to get to know other new families and receive information on the Cornerstone Parent Participation model and the PTA/Booster Club. You will receive more detailed information about the Grade Level In-services, General Parent Meetings and Parent Education nights as we get closer to the start of school. The bell schedule for Cornerstone Elementary School is as follows: all students will begin the day at 8:30am. Dismissal times will vary: Kindergarten will be dismissed at 2:05, 1st&2nd at 2:35 and 3rd-5th at 3:00. Every Monday will be an Early Release Day with dismissal for Kindergarten at 1:10 and 1-5 grade students at 1:30 and Minimum day dismissal will be 12:00 for all students. More detailed information will be communicated as the start of school nears. The staffing for the Cornerstone Elementary 2016-2017 school year is as follows: K- Beth Berry (1) Kim Voss (2) & Sheryl Rasmussen (6) 1st- River Fay (8) Suzie Wildey (9) & Kris Barnett (10) 2nd- Mandy Hass (13) Kim Hunter (14) & Jeri Berlin (15) 3rd- Barbie Hokanson (16), Caitlin Trutanich (17) & Brian Kono (18) 4th- Leslie Rowe (11) & Stacy Upton (12) 5th- Jenny Rooney (19) & Beth Buchholz (20) The first few weeks of school are always a little hectic and unpredictable owing to the reestablishment of routines. I would like to remind you all about the importance of being extra cautious during pick-up and drop-off times. The Cornerstone staff work very hard to ensure your child’s safety. Please obey all traffic laws and watch for our staff and parents as they will be assisting students out of and into cars. Remember, children should not be dropped off at school prior to 8:15am until supervision is provided. If your child arrives before 8:15, (s)he should be registered and dropped off at Kids’ Corner, which is a fee-based child care option. Also, please be prompt when picking up your children. After 3:15pm children who have not
been picked up will wait in the office and make phone calls home to parents. Let’s all do our part in maintaining a happy and healthy school experience. Cornerstone Elementary School believes that the subject of school safety is a shared concern. It is essential that the school community, parents, and students work together to develop a safe and disciplined environment where learning can take place and safety is a priority. Please do your part to ensure that this practice is successful. Developing and discussing a pick-up plan with your child daily is vital to ensuring a hassle-free experience. I thank you in advance for your time and attention to this very important matter. The Cornerstone School PTA/Booster Club is an integral partner in our successful school program and your child would not receive the top-notch educational experience without the PTA/Booster Club’s support. They generously provide us with funds and volunteers to maintain our educational efforts (i.e. field trips, assemblies, Art at Your Fingertips, technology, visual performing arts, science lab, and the list goes on…). Please join the Cornerstone PTA/Booster Club this year and support their efforts to provide the best possible experience for our students; or better yet, join the PTA/Booster Club executive board and attend the monthly meetings and become part of the decision making process. Your support is so greatly appreciated! The Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) is working hard to once again raise $3.4 million for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. This effort allows PVPUSD elementary school sites to maintain important programs and save teachers ' jobs. It's a reality -- without PEF's funding, class sizes would be larger, elementary classroom music and physical education teachers would be a thing of the past, counselors at intermediate and high schools would lose their jobs and the elementary STEM programs would not survive. Please consider donating to the Peninsula Education Foundation, any dollar amount will be accepted. I encourage you to contact the Foundation about making a contribution at
[email protected] or (310) 378-2278. The Peninsula Education Foundation (PEF) raises money to support the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District in meeting its funding priorities, in partnership with other groups, to assure continued excellence in our local public schools. Thank you for your support! Cornerstone Elementary School is dedicated to the development of the whole child, providing a solid foundation that stimulates thought, wonder, and a life-long passion for learning. Students, staff, parents, and the Cornerstone community share the responsibility of creating a positive environment that empowers all students to reach their fullest potential in all core areas as well as character development. Thank you for your continued support of Cornerstone Elementary School, and I look forward to another successful school year! Sincerely, Jeff Keeney, Principal
July, 2016 Dear Cornerstone Families, Happy summer! We hope this letter finds you thoroughly enjoying the time off with friends and family. Summer is a productive and busy time for our Parent Board and Booster Club. Our Executive Board, Mr. Keeney, and our teachers have been working together to create our 2016-‐17 calendar of events and programs for our Cornerstone community. Our Cornerstone Parent Board has also been working tirelessly to create our PTA & Booster Club Budgets for the 2016-‐17 school year so that we can make all of these wonderful experiences a reality. Every new and annual event and program we have planned helps to further enrich, engage, and foster our children’s learning and growth in the ways that have become the foundation of our exemplary school model. The start of a new school year brings with it the excitement of embarking upon a new path in our life’s journey. Just as we help our children to prepare for this journey in many ways, we, as parents, have to prepare as well. We all chose this unique and wonderful school because we want our children to experience the best education possible. We chose Cornerstone because we are committed to being actively involved in our children’s educational journey. The key to the continued success of our model, and the success of our children in their elementary years, is in how we each step up to volunteer our time, efforts, talents and interests, as well as our generous donations, which fund the exceptional programming our children and families experience here at Cornerstone. As individuals, we make a difference; together, we make a community. This starts with each and every family joining our PTA and Booster Club, and making a donation to the Peninsula Education Foundation, where every dollar makes a difference. As a community, we need to support all three of these entities to provide the high quality, interactive, academically-‐and-‐artistically-‐enriched programs, staffing, educational experiences, development, and growth that our children deserve. In the next several pages, you will learn what these three entities provide, have an opportunity to join, and you will also find important information on upcoming events at the beginning of the school year. In addition, you will see our “Flyer of Opportunities” pages, which share with you just SOME of the many wonderful opportunities for volunteering that are available. In order to make these opportunities a reality for our children, we invite you to take a look, seek more information, find an area of interest, and sign up to help. Also, in case you haven’t yet done so, please remember to complete your Scheduling Survey, which was sent out earlier this summer. YOU are a valuable and valued part of our community and we are grateful for your stepping up to help make our 2016-‐2017 school year the best ever. Have a fabulous remainder of your summer and we look forward to seeing you on August 29, 2016!

Important Scheduling Reminder: Due August 1st New & Returning Families: Please note we have a new system, so read & follow the directions completely! Thank you! (This letter was originally sent in mid-‐July.) Dear Cornerstone Families, We are so glad you have chosen Cornerstone School and to be a part of its wonderful Parent Participation model! Your active participation makes our school great, and is a required part of your child's enrollment at our school. In order to prepare for the upcoming school year, we need you to access the new Cornerstone Database and fill out three important sections by August 1: (1) Scheduling Survey, (2) Committee Inputs, (3) Directory Inputs. You will also need to update family and student information as needed. The link to access the new Cornerstone Database is http://prod.cstonedb.dx.am. On the first page of the link, you will find detailed instructions on how to access the Database, which hosts the Scheduling Survey and other required documents. Returning families: Please note that this year the Database will first ask you to create a Username and Password; we will no longer be using the same Username and Password for everyone at the school. Please follow the instructions provided through the link carefully. Special Instructions on the Mandatory Scheduling Survey: In order to schedule your required classroom Teaching Parent (TP) shifts, we need you to fill-‐ out the scheduling survey. Each classroom has a designated Participation Representative who will consolidate the information on the surveys and create and distribute the TP shift schedules each month. The first schedule will be distributed after the District releases class list information, which is on or around August 24, 2016. What you Must do to Fulfill the Survey Requirements: •
•
•
You are required to choose a minimum of two shift days, preferably three, that you are available to work. You *must* provide at least two different days. For example, selecting TP1 and TP2 availability on Mondays does not fulfill the “two days” requirement, even though you are available for two different shifts. Selecting TP1 and TP2 on Mondays, and TP2 and TP3 on Fridays would meet the “two days” requirement. Selecting TP1 on Mondays and TP3 on Fridays would also meet the “two days” requirement, but giving as many shift options as possible on your available days will make scheduling easier and more balanced for your class. Completing the survey is mandatory and due by end-‐of the night on August 1st. Class Participation Reps will not be able to guarantee schedule preferences to families whose surveys are received after the August 1stdeadline. Families who do not complete the survey by the deadline will be assigned shifts Please remember to add your initials at the end of each form. Also, please be aware that you MUST select at least two (2) TP shifts for which you are available in EACH applicable section (Kindergarten, 1st-‐2nd Grade, 3rd-‐ 5th Grade) of the Scheduling Survey.
Thank you for your timely attention to completing this information by the August 1 deadline. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2016-‐2017 school year for all of our Cornerstone children. Sincerely, Mark Hama and Gabi Ryan Participation Co-‐Chairs

Your Parent Teacher Association is hard at work on behalf of your student and your family. The Cornerstone PTA works in alignment with the Cornerstone Booster Club bringing student enrichment activities, safety issues, community support and legislative awareness to our entire student/parent body. Teachers and Principals work with PTA too, all for the benefit of students and student programs. Reflections and Red and Yellow Ribbon Weeks coordinate with the rest of the district and beyond. Through PTA, we associate and share with and from other schools in our district. When your child moves on to Intermediate and High Schools, the PTA is the major springboard for parental involvement with the school, staff and principal. Cornerstone offers stimulating and educational PTA sponsored programs. PVP Council PTA represents PTA's at all PVPUSD schools. Cornerstone is committed to support them in facilitating PTA programs and the Costume Closet because all our students benefit.

Parents should never turn LEFT into the driveway in the front of the MPR.
2.
The curbs at Groveoak Place and Hyte Street must be clear of parked cars during pick-up and drop-off. These areas are identified by the NO PARKING signs.

5.
Driveways (especially those of the houses in the neighborhood) and all crosswalks must be kept clear for safe passage by pedestrians.
6.
Pedestrians (students and parents) must enter and exit the school using the sidewalks and crosswalks. Do not walk through the parking lot and do not enter through the maintenance / trash bin yard.
7.
Students are to enter and exit their vehicles only when directed to do so by a teaching parent on curb duty. Drivers are to remain in their cars at all times.
8.
Avoid any behaviors that will slow down the flow of traffic, including: a. Talking with a teaching parent on curb duty b. Exiting your car for any reason. Teaching parents will remove all items c. Parking your car in the drop-off/pick-up lane in front of the MPR.
9.
Always follow the directions of the teaching parents on duty.

Stop selling and start earning! Scrip fundraising is a no-selling program that allows families to raise money for their non-profit organization (NPO). Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks, and credit cards. You purchase gift cards from your organization at face value, and your coordinator orders those cards from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a reduced price. The difference is an instant rebate for your organization. It’s really that simple! When you use scrip gift cards at your favorite retailers, you’re fundraising while you shop. Great Lakes Scrip Center offers over 300 of the country’s biggest brands, including grocery, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, home improvement, and more. Just by using scrip to pay for your normal weekly purchases, you can easily raise $500 or more per year. It’s time to put your shopping dollars to work!
