CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX! FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Today’s Feast, called in Latin Corpus Christi, is the day when we pay special honor to Our Lord’s Real Presence in the Holy ! Eucharist.! Let us reflect on the Eucharist and, more specifically, our devotion to the Eucharist. How important is the Holy Eucharist for each one of us? How important is it for many Catholics? Unfortunately for many, the Eucharist is not what it is supposed to be, the source and the summit of our Christian life. There are many reasons. Some people do not understand what the Eucharist is. It has not really sunk in. They know the catechism. They know that Jesus changed bread and wine into His Body and Blood at the Last Supper, but that has really not sunk in. It has really not made a difference. For if it did, it would change their lives. Once we really believe Jesus’ words that this is His Body, then we realize that we have here the greatest gift ever given to anyone in the world, more precious than gold or jewels. We have the Son of God here, in our tabernacle. We have God here in our churchis there any simpler way to put it?! And if heaven is where God is, then we can truly say that we have right here in the tabernacle, right here in this church, right here on our tongue or in our hand, a little bit of heaven already. I remember the story of a Catholic man who brought his nonCatholic friend to church. The Catholic man came up to receive Holy Communion at the Mass. After the Mass was finished, the nonCatholic man asked his friend, “What was that round white thing you went up to receive?” The Catholic friend explained that Catholics believe this is the Body of Christ. This is Jesus Himself under the form of breadnot bread any more, but the living Son of God. The non Catholic friend said something so important. He said “Well, I don’t believe that, but if I did, I would crawl on my hands and knees to receive God.” That man did not have the faith, but he expressed a great truth. If we only realized that God is here, we would do ! everything and anything to receive Him.! Today’s Feast of Corpus Christi is the Church’s invitation to us to grow deeper and deeper in our love for Jesus’ Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist. The great Bishop Fulton Sheen told a beautiful and true story about what inspired him to have great love for the Holy Eucharist, even to spending one hour each day praying before Our Lord in the Eucharist. The bishop was asked once who inspired him to have such great love for the Blessed Sacrament? Perhaps a pope or a cardinal or some other bishop? The bishop said no. It was an elevenyear old Chinese girl. When the Communists took over China seventy years ago, they imprisoned a priest in his own rectory near the church. The priest was confined there only to see the Communist soldiers enter the church, break open the tabernacle and ! scatter the Sacred Hosts on the floor. The priest knew exactly how many consecrated hosts were therethirtytwo. A little girl saw this whole scene. That night she returned and slipped past the guard and entered the church where she prayed for an hour in reparation for the act of hatred she had witnessed against the Blessed Sacrament. Then she went up to the place where the Sacred Hosts were ! scattered. And she bent over and received Jesus in Holy Communion with her tongue, since at that time people were not permitted to touch the Sacred Host with their hands. Each night she returned to the church, prayed for her hour and received another host with her tongue as she did on that first night. On the thirtysecond night, after she had consumed the last Host, she accidentally made a noise which awakened a soldier. The priest imprisoned in his rectory saw the soldier beat that girl to death with the butt of his rifle. We do not know the name of that brave Chinese girl, but certainly she is a martyred saint of the Holy Eucharist. If you ever want to know how precious Holy Communion is, think of that young girl and her love for the Sacred Body of Christ.! On this feast when we honor the Body and Blood of Christ, let us think of that martyred Chinese girl. May we have the same love for the Eucharist that she had. May we approach the Eucharist with deep reverence and deep love. May we never take the Eucharist for granted. Rather, may it always be the center of our Catholic lives.! ! “O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.”! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Father Thomas B. Derivan! LOVE’S CHALLENGE June is unquestionably the month of love. And what a lot we can learn about love, about God’s love for us and with us, by looking to the June brides and grooms. The bride and groom literally light up at the sight of one another. True lovers delight in one another’s company and find life enlarged and expanded in ways they had never experienced before.! Their love for one another is expressed, certainly in bright smiles and loving glances. But their love takes many other forms: deeds of thoughtfulness and gently affection: A flower as an unexpected gift expressing love...the affectionate hug...the quiet, gentle holding of hands, even when giving attention to something else. ! Like newlyweds who can no longer remember being single, human lovers are glad when together...pained when separated...and ! saddened when one unwittingly causes the other emotional pain or trauma. And they are never at a loss for words, even when they have no need of expressing their thoughts. For they have so much to share, they can express their love in words or in much appreciated silence, just being together.! And yes, we can and do love God in the same way. Great saints like Francis and Clare have left us much thought and prayerful ! reflection on the ordinary, mystical love people can experience in two ways: their love of God and God’s infinite love for that person.! Yet, for most people, realizing love of God takes some doing. Though we love God in faith, we can’t reach out and take His hand.! Jesus taught us, as Francis! demonstrated so many times, that we can find and love God in this world. And we do that by finding and loving God dwelling in others. What a powerful thought it is to remember that we can find God looking back at us from the eyes of the very poor, the disguised and disfigured as St. Francis did. He heard Jesus’ words that as often as we give a cup of water or food and clothes “to the least of my brethren, you did it to me.”! The God who promised never to leave us is with us always and we surely find Him waiting for our love to be expressed to those most in need of our help and of our prayers. A truly powerful thought for the month of love, June. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! (from the Franciscan Mission Associates) ! !
MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST A MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIL FOR THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ or, according to the well known Latin expression, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.! The Gospel presents the narrative of the institution of the Eucharist, performed by Jesus during the Last Supper in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. On the eve of his redeeming death on the Cross, He fulfilled what had been foretold: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give is my flesh for the life of the world … He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him” (Jn 6:51,56). Jesus takes the bread in his hands and says “Take; this is my body” (Mk 14:22). With this gesture and with these words, He assigns to the bread a function which is no longer simply that of physical nutrition, but that of making his Person present in the midst of the community of believers.! The Last Supper represents the culmination of Christ’s entire life. It is not only the anticipation of his sacrifice which will be ! rendered on the Cross, but also the synthesis of a life offered for the salvation of the whole of humanity. Therefore, it is not enough to state that Jesus is present in the Eucharist, but one must see in it the presence of a life given and partake in it. When we take and eat that Bread, we are associated into the life of Jesus, we enter into communion with Him, we commit to achieve communion among ! ourselves, to transform our life into a gift, especially to the poorest.! Today’s feast evokes this message of solidarity and urges us to welcome the intimate invitation to conversion and to service, love and forgiveness. It urges us to become, with our life, imitators of that which we celebrate in the Liturgy. The Christ, who nourishes us under the consecrated species of bread and wine, is the same One who comes to us in the everyday happenings; He is in the poor ! person who holds out his hand, in the suffering one who begs for help, in the brother or sister who asks for our availability and awaits our welcome. He is in the child who knows nothing about Jesus or salvation, who does not have faith. He is in every human being, even the smallest and the defenseless.! The Eucharist, source of love for the life of the Church, is the school of charity and solidarity. Those who are nourished by the Bread of Christ cannot remain indifferent to those who do not have their daily bread. Today, we know it is an ever more serious problem.! May the Feast of Corpus Christi increasingly inspire and nurture in each one of us the desire and commitment for a welcoming and supportive society. Let us pour these hopes into the heart of the Virgin Mary, Eucharistic Woman. May she kindle in all the joy of participating in the Holy Eucharist.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! June 7, 2015! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! A PRAYER OF ST. PADRE PIO AFTER COMMUNION Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You.! Stay with me Lord, because I am weak, and I need Your strength, so that I may not fall so often.! Stay with me Lord, for You are my life, and without You, I am without fervor.! Stay with me Lord, for You are my light, and without you, I am in darkness.! Stay with me Lord, to show me Your will.! Stay with me Lord, so that I hear Your voice and follow You.! Stay with me Lord, for I desire to love you very much, and always be in Your company.! Stay with me Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You.! Stay with me Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of love.! Stay with me, Jesus, for it is getting late, and the day is coming to a close, and life passes, death, judgment, eternity approach. It is! necessary to renew my strength, so that I will not stop along the way and for that, I need You. It is getting late and death approaches. ! I fear the darkness, the temptations the dryness, the cross, the sorrows. O how I need You, my Jesus, in this night of exile.! Stay with me tonight, Jesus, in life with all its dangers, I need You.! Let me recognize You as Your disciples did at the breaking of bread, so that the Eucharistic Communion be the light which disperses ! the darkness, the force which sustains me, the unique joy of my heart.! Stay with me Lord, because at the hour of my death, I want to remain united to you, if not by Communion, at least by grace and love.! Stay with me Jesus, I do not ask for divine consolation because I do not merit it, but the gift of Your presence, oh yes, I ask this of ! You.! Stay with me Lord, for it is You alone I look for, Your Love, Your Grace, Your Will, Your Heart, Your Spirit, because I love You ! and ask no other reward but to love You more and more.! With a firm love, I will love You with all my heart while on earth and continue to love You perfectly during all eternity. Amen! ! !

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES Today at the 10:30AM Mass we will have the 8th Grade Graduation Mass for our school. And this Friday these twentyfive young people will become the latest graduates of St. Theresa School. Over these past sixtyfour years, how many students have learned here to know, love and serve God. How many have learned from dedicated teachers and parents the importance of using their talents which are gifts from Almighty God. And how many have gone on in life to be good fathers and mothers (and now grandfathers and ! grandmothers), good teachers and business people, good lawyers and doctors, and good priests, like Father Richard Marrano, ordained just four years ago, and Father Louis Masi, just ordained this past May 26th, our latest alumnus to become a priest.! ! How blessed our new graduates are to have such dedicated people in their growingup years, their principal Mrs. Fanelli who treats each child as one of her own; our teachers and staff who give our children not only their time and teaching ability, but also their love and sincere concern; and parents and grandparents who have sacrificed so much that these graduates can have a good Catholic ! education. Congratulations to our graduates, of course, but congratulations to all who have helped them to reach this milestone in their lives. With the help given to them both here in our school and in their own homes, we expect these soontobe graduates to make us proud in the years ahead. We have every confidence that they will.! ! We want our graduates to know that they are always part of St. Theresa’s School and St. Theresa Parish. Even though they will not be coming here every day as they have during the past years (some of them since ThreeYear Old Class), this is always their “second home.” Wherever they go, they always belong to us.! ! JUNE 8 SAINT WILLIAM OF YORK (c. 1090!1154)
A disputed election as archbishop of York and mysterious death. Those are the headlines from the tragic life of today’s saint.! ! Born into a powerful family in 12thcentury England, William seemed destined for great things. His uncle was next in line for the! English thronethough a nasty dynastic struggle complicated things. William himself faced an internal Church feud.! ! Despite these roadblocks, he was nominated as archbishop of York in 1140. Local clergymen were less enthusiastic, however, and the archbishop of Canterbury refused to consecrate William. Three years later a neighboring bishop performed the consecration, but it lacked the approval of Pope Innocent II, whose successors likewise withheld approval. William was deposed, and a new election was ordered.! ! It was not until 115414 years after he was first nominatedthat William became archbishop of York. When he entered the city that spring after years of exile, he received an enthusiastic welcome. Within two months he was dead, probably from poisoning. His administrative assistant was a suspect, though no formal ruling was ever made.! ! Despite all that happened to him, William did not show resentment toward his opponents. Following his death, many miracles were attributed to him. He was canonized 73 years later.!
A REMINDER ABOUT REVERENCE IN RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION As we observe today the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, it is good for us to review our understanding of this Blessed ! Sacrament and the proper way to receive Him.! Some points to reflect on:! ! Let us always remember Who we are receiving in Holy Communion. We are receiving the living Jesus under the form of bread. We are not just receiving breadquite the opposite. In the Mass, the bread is changed at the Consecration. When the priest repeats the words of Jesus, “This is my Body,” the bread is no longer bread. It is Jesus’ Sacred Body which He gives to us. It is not correct to say “I receive the bread at Mass.” It is not bread any more! The correct thing to say is “I receive Holy Communion.” “I receive the Body of Christ.” “I receive the Holy Eucharist.” “I receive the Sacred Host.”! ! Make every effort to be in church several minutes before the Mass begins, so that you can pray to be ready to celebrate ! the Mass and receive Holy Communion with proper reverence.! ! Sometimes people say that they are not worthy to receive Holy Communion. We must remember that none of us is worthy to receive you but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” We receive Holy Communion because the Lord wants to come to us to strengthen us in our Christian life. One of the saints called Holy Communion “the medicine of ! immortality” because through it the Lord cures us of our human weaknesses. The only thing that should keep us away ! from receiving Holy Communion is a deliberate mortal sin (intentionally missing Mass, hurting someone in a serious way, ! being unfaithful in marriage, being involved with drugs, etc.) in which case the person must go to confession before ! receiving Holy Communion.! ! We welcome all people to come to join us in Mass, even if they are not members of the Catholic faith. However, those who are not Catholic do not receive Holy Communion since “Communion” involves “union” union with the Church and its teaching. Likewise, if we are visiting a nonCatholic church, we should not receive Communion there for the same reason.! ! The whole Mass should prepare us to receive Jesus in Holy Communion. Our attention should be on the great mystery that is happening at the altar. I like to tell the children that when the altar server rings the bell, it is like to doorbell or the ! telephone ringing, as Jesus says to us, “Here I am!”! ! When we walk forward to receive Holy communion, we should not let anything or anyone else distract us. We should be praying quietly, telling Jesus we welcome Him to our souls. After Communion, we should spend quiet time, either ! kneeling or sitting at our bench, thanking Jesus for this beautiful Sacrament.! ! In receiving Holy Communion, as you well know, there are two proper methods. You may receive on your tongue. Or you may receive in your hand. If you are receiving in your hand, your hands should be made into a cross, one hand ! beneath the other. When the priest or Eucharistic Minister places the Sacred Host in you top hand, use your bottom hand ! to pick it up and place in your mouth. Do this immediately in front of the priestdo not turn, lest the Sacred Host fall. ! It is not appropriate to take the Sacred Host from the priest (let him place it in your hand).! ! The U.S. Bishops have determined that before receiving Holy Communion, we should make a simple bow.! ! The normal way of receiving Holy Communion is by standing. If you wish to kneel, you must be careful not to trip others behind youbetter to wait until the end of the Communion line.! ! We observe the Eucharistic fastone hour refraining from food or drink (except water or medicine) before the actual time of Holy Communion. For example, if you come to the 9AM Mass, Communion usually is given around 9:30AM.! therefor you should not eat or drink from 8:30AM on. Please note: Those with medical conditions are excused from the ! Eucharistic fast.! ! If for whatever reason you are not properly prepared to receive Holy Communion, you should make a “spiritual ! communion” at Mass, joining your prayers spiritually to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. This brings you in union ! with the Lord’s presence in Holy Communion even though you are not actually receiving the Sacred Host.! ! A few other quick reminders: Try to use the bathroom before Mass. Please do not read the bulletin during Mass. Use the missalette and the song sheet and answer the prayers with strong voice.! ! Parents, please remember that Our Lord said, “Let the little children come to me.” BRING YOUR CHILDREN, INCLUDING BABIES, TO MASS. If the child becomes r estless, you can take the child for a few moments to the ! vestibule and then return. In extreme case, you may use the Cry Room, but that should be only in exceptional cases. Our ! Lord wants His children at Mass. If a child cries, we should remember Pope Francis’ remark that a child’s cry is the voice! of God. As I tell parents, I do not worry about the baby cryingI do worry about the cellphone ringing!!! I hope these reminders are helpful to us all in receiving Jesus’ greatest giftthe gift of His very Self in Holy Communion.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Father Thomas B. Derivan! ! ST. ANTHONY NOVENA The St. Anthony Novena is every Tuesday at 7:00PM. Come join us for the 13 week Novena as we petition, praise and thank God for all the blessings received through the intercession of ! St. Anthony.!
