REST IN PEACE Gary Cuscino, former parishoner A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Today’s gospel contains this truth about parenting: “but his parents did not know.” One of the reasons parenting is so difficult is because our children don’t tell us everything. If the Holy Family had trouble with their teenager, why do we think it will be easier for us? JANUARY 1, 2017
Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. The Church placed this important dogmatic celebration on the first day of the secular calendar to teach us that our true hopes and aspirations for the New Year begin with Jesus Christ. Mary’s “yes” to the archangel’s invitation to be the Mother of God’s Son brought the blessings of the Lord’s gracious peace to her people and to all the world. In 431 A.D., the Council of Ephesus declared that Mary is truly the Mother of God, the Theotokos in Greek, or God-bearer. Ephesus is believed to be the traditional site of Mary’s dormition and assumption into heaven. This teaching about her motherhood of God has become a dogmatic tenant of Christianity. One of the four great basilicas of Rome, St. Mary Major, was built in the 5th century following the Council to mark this essential teaching. The phrase, “Mary, the Mother of God,” is also included in all the ancient texts of our Eucharistic Prayers in Mass, as well as in the most familiar Marian devotional prayer, the “Hail, Mary.” This is the most revered of Mary’s many titles. The Incarnation of Jesus Christ is a mystery of our faith in which God and humanity are united in bonds of love. Mary’s motherhood is the existential point where that union is consecrated by the Holy Spirit. Having no earthly father, Jesus derives his whole humanity from his mother, Mary, just as his divinity is wholly begotten of his divine Father. The gracious gift of grace in the Incarnation of Christ is given to Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit who makes her the Mother of God, the Mother of the Church, and the Mother of all who belong to Jesus. Mary’s maternal prayer draws us to the Father, through the Son and in the Spirit. Mary is, of all pure creatures, the one nearest to God, most like to Him, the one who received the most from Him and who renders to Him the greatest glory. Mary’s closeness to God is the result of the Incarnation which was prepared for, in her immaculate conception, by God Himself. Her motherhood, intimate with Jesus by definition, means that Mary enjoyed the highest possible union of a human being with God and an intimate familiarity with each person of the Trinity. She is a model of faith and spiritual communion for all of us who want to draw close to the Lord in this life and to be one with Him in the next. Rev. Richard Infante, Pastor
