CHRIST THE KING

OUR MISSION Christ the King Jesuit College Prep is a Catholic, Jesuit, independent, coeducational, college preparatory school for students from families on Chicago’s West Side who would otherwise not have access to a private secondary school education. Ways to Give
President Clement V. Martin with students during our Spring admissions open house.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
5088 West Jackson Boulevard Chicago, IL 60644 773-261-7505 www.ctkjesuit.org
It is my pleasure to present to you the Christ the King Jesuit College Prep Annual Report for the 2013-14 school year. This report captures just a few of the many highlights of the year, which began by welcoming Mr. Clement Martin to Christ the King as our new president. Under Clem’s leadership, Christ the King has continued to grow and successfully serve students and families who would otherwise be unable to afford a safe, Jesuit, college preparatory education.
The successes are evident in the stories on the pages that follow. Every graduate was accepted to college -now the third year in a row -- and the overwhelming majority of our alumni are continuing to pursue their degrees. Our incoming freshmen come from families of limited economic means, averaging $24,700 for a family of five, but are eager to work hard in the classroom and on the job to follow Christ the King’s pathway to college. And we are challenging our students to grow as “men and women for others” by adding more clubs and activities, including mock trial and drama, while doubling down on our commitment to serving others. Last year, our students committed 7,689 hours of community service, not only in Chicago, but also on service trips to Appalachia and Nazareth Farm. All this and more would not be possible without your generosity. Thank you for your support and active partnership this past school year. YOU are truly changing lives on the West Side of Chicago.
• YOU provided real world work experience that builds lifelong skills for our students and continues to benefit our 158 alumni, like Caprishea. • YOU inspired our students to put their faith into action in service to others, for which they received national recognition. • YOU created opportunities to participate in activities like mock trial and shared your expertise at Career Day. • YOU ensured that every student, regardless of need, can afford a safe, Catholic, college prep education. In countless ways, YOU are truly making a lasting difference in the lives of our students, families, and school community.
In closing, I would like to congratulate Bob Marjan as the newly elected Board Chair, and welcome new board members Fr. Albert DiUlio, S.J., Ms. Kathy Graham, Sr. Mary Fran McLaughlin, BVM, and Mr. Mark Reilly. Finally, I would like to thank the following board members who retired at the end of this year after having served the school so faithfully during their terms: Sr. Brenda Eagan, IBVM, Dr. Alice Hayes, Mr. Jack Jiganti, and Fr. Brian Paulson, S.J. Our students and the West Side of Chicago will benefit from their many contributions for years to come. Gratefully,
Scott Murray Chairman of the Board of Directors

STUDENT SUCCESS
Meet J’Khai
Students Practice Law at the Daley Center Through our Corporate Work Study Program, many of our students work at law firms throughout the city. David ’16 works at Johnson & Bell, LLC, supporting their criminal defense team by filing paperwork and court documents. David and CTK’s other aspiring lawyers dream of the day when they will be making arguments and examining witnesses for the cases their firms try.
J’Khai ‘17 has his career and academic goals set high! With 13 siblings, J’Khai’s home life is often unpredictable. Despite these challenges, he has become a young leader in the Christ the King community. J’Khai brings energy, passion, and hard work to the classroom, workplace, and community, which has led to well-deserved success during his freshman year. Christ the King’s combination of academics, workstudy, extracurriculars, and service opportunities attracted J’Khai to CTK. Since arriving, J’Khai has taken advantage of many opportunities and subsequently discovered his passion to volunteer and grew his love of making music. J’Khai lives out Christ the King’s mission to become a person for others through his time volunteering with our Christian Service Program. On many Saturday mornings throughout his freshman year, J’Khai could be found distributing food at the Our Lady of the Angels Food Pantry to those in need in the local Austin community. After college, J’Khai dreams of becoming a professional musician and producer, but for now he carries his spirit for music with him as he plays percussion in the school marching band. While J’Khai explained the experience of playing in a band for the first time, saying,
“I love Christ the King because of the different opportunities here that I wouldn’t have had elsewhere. It really makes me happy being here where I am surrounded by positive people and a supportive community.”

Their day in court came on April 4, 2014, at the Howlett Cup, the inaugural mock trial competition named in honor of the late Judge Michael Howlett, Jr. Organized by Dudley and Lake LLC attorney and CTK champion, Conor Heaton, and held in courtrooms at the Daley Center, Christ the King students were given their chance to build a case as both defense lawyers and witnesses, competing against Cristo Rey Jesuit, Cristo Rey St. Martin, and Loyola Academy in a mock trial tournament. CTK moderator, Mr. Levasseur, and dedicated volunteer coaches, Maeve Kendall and Marsha McClellan, met with the team for 5 hours each school week to diligently prepare opening statements, cross examinations and closing arguments.
These opportunities are only available because of the commitment of our countless volunteers. Thank you Maeve, Marsha and all those who open doors and provide amazing opportunities for our students!
The five members of the CTK mock trial team are ready for court!

COMMUNITY SUCCESS
CTK Students Receive National Recognition for Community Service
Often attracting local attention for their accomplishments, our students provided over 7,600 hours of community service last school year, and more than 33,700 hours of community service since the school opened in 2008. In total, over 430 CTK students have participated in service, benefiting over 4,000 individuals. The most popular volunteer efforts take place on Saturday mornings at Our Lady of Angels Food Pantry and the Dignity Breakfast at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica.
Five members of the Students in Action Leadership Team traveled to DC in June to complete in the National Service Awards.
Christ the King was named as the 2013-2014 Jefferson Awards Students in Action Regional Recipient for Outstanding Service by a High School. CTK was chosen for exemplifying the three pillars of the Students in Action Program: leadership, engagement and impact on both school and the greater community. 92% of the student body participated in volunteer efforts last school year.
Seniors Announce College Choices
The Jefferson Awards National Ceremonies are one of the country’s most prestigious celebration of public service, recognizing national figures and student leaders alike. Five members of our Students in Action Leadership Team represented CTK at the National Awards Ceremony in Washington, DC last June, which honored former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. We are proud of our student leaders and our school-wide culture of service in the Ignatian tradition.
College Signing Day serves as a unique opportunity for our senior leaders to show their peers the payoff of hard work and dedication over the course of their four years at CTK.
Many of our students are the first in their families to go to college. Our graduating seniors announce their college choices with pride in front of their friends, families and the entire the student body. This annual event, held each May is a a unique opportunity for our seniors to share words of wisdom with the underclassmen and announce their college choices. Mr. Bajner, Senior Class Sponsor, has been with this class since their freshman year. “I have watched these students transform into men and women for others,” said Mr. Bajner.
“Although I am saddened that they will no longer be leaders in the building, I am comforted by the fact that they are destined to do great things.”
As the senior class sponsor, Mr. Bajner addresses the Class of 2014 during College Signing Day and graduation.
Congratulations to the Class of 2014, go forth and set the world on fire!

CTK’S POSSE SCHOLARS: Mya and Aaron
Meet Caprishea
CTK is proud to have had two members of the Class of 2014, Aaron and Mya, as recipients of scholarships from the Posse Foundation. The prestigious award will provide a four-year full-tuition scholarship for both students to Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Mya and Aaron join last year’s valedictorian, Terumi, as CTK’s first three Posse Scholars. Terumi is currently studying at Middlebury College in Vermont. Aaron and Mya spent count less hours during their senior year preparing for the rigorous application and interview process to become Posse Scholars, and the work continued after they were accepted. They wrote various essays, refined their resumes, and attended counseling meetings as a part of the Posse program, in addition to maintaining excellent academic and work-study standing as CTK students. At Trinity, Aaron and Mya are connected to 8 other Posse Scholars from the Chicago area who are now continuing their education in New England.
“I’ve always wanted to go far away for college, plus it will be nice to have a group of students I know from Chicago as a support system,” says Mya. “I’m really excited for all of the opportunities to come.” Posse Scholars graduate college at a rate of 90%, which is significantly higher than the national average. Through its strong network of alumni and job resources, the Posse Foundation will continue to support Mya and Aaron throughout their four
years at Trinity, and well beyond into their future careers.
Caprishea is a member of the CTK Class of 2013, now a Sophomore at Ball State.
It’s August 7th, Senior Send Off Day, and the class of 2014 is gathering one last time at Christ the King before they go their separate ways. CTK alum Caprishea Jones has come back to speak to the class and share learnings from her freshman year at Ball State University. “My advice to you is to stay focused, ambitious, and positive about your education.” A psychology and pre-med student, Caprishea knows all too well that success is never immediate; it requires work, preparation and dedication.
“I am grateful to have come from such a supportive, close-knit community that has prepared me for the challenges of college.” Facing her most challenging class yet, Caprishea is motivated by advice from her favorite teacher at CTK. “Mr. Barlow was strict, but he was upbeat and kept it real. He told me that Organic Chemistry is the make-it-or-break-it class if you want to go on to a premed program. So I’m not allowing myself to get too discouraged or prideful. I’ve learned to ask for help when I need it, and I’m willing to work on this. In this new competitive environment, Caprishea attributes her professional work experience at O’Keefe Lyons & Hynes, LLC as one of the main factors that sets her apart. After four years with the firm, she was offered a paid internship after her freshman year at Ball State. Her time at O’Keefe has taught her how to work well with a team and how to be an active listener in order to better understand the situation - skills we know she will carry throughout her pre-med track to becoming a hardworking, caring professional.

THE CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM Since 2008, Christ the King has provided students with a safe and academically rigorous college-prep education through an economically sustainable educational model — the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). More than 200 civically-engaged businesses of all sizes and industries throughout the Chicago region hire our talented students, who serve as reliable, productive and cost-effective employees. The CWSP is a shared program of Christ the King Jesuit and Cristo Rey Jesuit. Together, these two high schools exclusively serve students and families with limited economic resources in Chicago’s Austin and Pilsen neighborhoods. Through CWSP, students earn up to 70% of their tuition, making the dream of a safe, affordable, faith-based, quality college prep education a reality. Our students also gain valuable on-the-job experience in a highly professional setting and employers are able to fill a position at a competitive cost with well-trained students, while enhancing diversity and talent pipelines. For more information about filling a need at your office, contact Lillie Sellers, Director of Corporate Relations for CWSP, at 312-890-7871 or
