Direct Characterization What the narrator reveals about the character directly. Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.”
Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”
Indirect characterization -What the character says and does, -What other characters say or how they react to a character. -How the character responds to events in the plot Speech: What does the character say and how does he/she speak? Thoughts: What is shown about the character through his/her private thoughts and feelings? Effect: What effect does the character have on other people? How do they feel or react to him/her? Actions: What does the character do? How does the character act in different situations? Looks: What does the character's appearance say about his/her personality?
Flat Character
Flat characters are one dimensional and superficial; they can be described in a single sentence.
Round characters are complex and multidimensional, like real people.
Dynamic Character Dynamic characters change in an important way because of the story’s action.
