True Fulfillment
May 7, 2017 EASTER 4
All of us seem to be on an endless search to sa sfy the desires of the human heart. We will do almost anything to sa sfy that desire. The great human principle of life is: seek pleasure and, by all means, avoid pain. St. Augus ne said: “Our hearts are restless, O God, un l they rest in you.” Today, we hear Jesus tell us, “I have come that you might have life and have it to the full.” Life is not to be an uninteres ng, spiritless or sorrowful existence, but one that fulfills all the hopes and dreams of the human heart. Jesus was in love with life and He wanted to share that experience with all people! We can only wonder what the Lord had in mind. To most of us, the good life typically means enough money to take care of our needs and enough me to enjoy the leisure and happiness that comes to those who work hard. But, most have very li le money or me to spend with family and friends. Jesus was an i nerant preacher who did not know where his next meal would come from or where he could lay down His head. He was just taken up with the Kingdom and He was willing to pay the price to bring that good news to the world. In spite of all of His suffering and pain, rejec on and what would seem to some as failure; He lived life with real vigor and charm. We would say He loved every minute of it. Even the rich young man, whose wealth did not sa sfy his desire for life, was anxious to know Jesus’ secret. Jesus told him: “Now go and sell all that you have and give it to the poor and then come and follow me.” Scripture says: “His face fell, for he was a man of great wealth.” The good life is much more than having a good me; we know that to be true. Suffering is also a part of what it means to be alive. There are mes when suffering takes up the be er part of our days, weeks and even years. When we know its place, when we can accept suffering as part of life, we can understand and realize what Jesus meant by the fullness of life. When we are happy, we say life is good. When we are unhappy, we say life is bad. Jesus would have us realize that happiness is only but a part of life - and not the main part! He did not have in mind a series of good mes that would go on forever. Jesus lived a full life that was nothing like that. Life to the full means all that God intends it to be. There are to be no limita ons, no barriers to freedom, and no boundaries to its love. But, there will always be suffering, struggle, anxiety and frustra on to live that life that the Good Shepherd has come to bring to each of us. We are to listen to His voice and follow in His ways. We can easily be distracted by other voices in our world. Even though we walk through the valley of darkness, we are to know in faith that our Good Shepherd will be there. He is the only gate to Resurrec on and new life. Lord, we truly trust in you!
