AP English Language and Composition Syllabus Mr. Thomas Roddy Manual Arts High School August 13, 2013 to December 20, 2013 Course Overview, adapted from the College Board Website: The purpose of this class will be to teach students to analyze and interpret samples of effective writing by identifying and explaining several authors’ use of rhetorical strategies and techniques particularly in nonfiction works. Additionally, this class will show students how to apply these strategies and techniques in their own writing by sustaining arguments based on readings, research, and/or personal experiences. Assignments One Pagers:
Outside of the works we read in class, each of you will be responsible for reading an additional five books (5) independently. For each book you read, you must complete a One Pager. These will ask you to articulate what you have learned from the book. You must respond to each question on the One Pager with a minimum of three sentences each. Each one pager will be graded using a rubric and will be worth 6 points each.
You will be expected to respond to the works we read. Each essay will have its own rubric and I will review the rubrics with each of you as needed. For each essay that does not meet the expectation, you will have the opportunity to revise the essay for a better grade.
Homework It is my expectation that you will read each night for at least 30 minutes. Materials Each of you must bring two pens, two pencils, a notebook, and your independent novel to class each day. There should be no excuses for not being prepared for class. Additionally, each of you will need to create an account in gmail, or open and LAUSD e-mail account. The latter can be done via the www.lausd.net website. I will also need for each of you to open an account Dropbox. Please go to www.dropbox.com. Conduct/Behavior You should know the rules of school at this point, but the two things I will not abide are eating in class, and grooming in class. Support I arrive early, and can meet with you as early as 7:30, should that be necessary. You can also send me an e-mail to [email protected] if you need to in order to give me an assignment or arrange a meeting with me. I eat lunch in my room and can be available for a conference if necessary.
